I’ve Made Money Online for 20 Years: 17 Legit Ways for Beginners

Advertisements

There are hundreds of ways to make money online, some legit and others either a waste of time or flat-out scams.

I’ve been making money online for 20+ years, including 18 years of blogging, so I know how hard it can be to tell the good opportunities from the bad.

To find the legitimate ways to make money online in 2026 and beyond, I researched current platforms, payout rules, and real-world earnings to separate the opportunities worth your time from those that aren’t.

Quick answers: How to make money online

  • How can I make money online fast? Sell your used stuff on Vinted, eBay or Facebook Marketplace, where a local cash sale pays the same day. Or test games on PlaytestCloud, which pays within three days with no minimum.
  • How can I make money online for free? Sell things you own, take studies on Prolific, test games on PlaytestCloud, or join diary studies on dscout. All cost $0 to start.
  • What are the highest-paying online side hustles? AI training on DataAnnotation or Outlier, specialized freelance writing and virtual assistant work offer some of the best rates I found, up to about $30 an hour in real pay.
  • How can I make $500 a month online? Stack three or four sources, such as AI training on Outlier, Prolific studies and PlaytestCloud tests. Give it two to three months to become steady.
  • Can I make money online from my phone? Yes. dscout runs through its phone app, PlaytestCloud works on iPhone and Android, and selling on Vinted or eBay is easy from a phone.
  • How can I make money online outside the US? Prolific, Askable, Outlier and User Interviews all accept people in many countries, but check your country before you sign up.
  • What online side hustles can I do quietly? AI training on DataAnnotation or Outlier and some Prolific studies can be done in silence. Website testing on UserTesting usually means talking out loud.
  • What can make money online long term? Blogging, affiliate marketing, Kindle publishing on Amazon KDP and digital products on Gumroad or Payhip can pay for years. They’re slow to start, though. My blog took six months to earn its first few dollars.

The best option depends on how quickly you need the money, what skills you have, and whether you want quick cash or something you can build over time.

Rather than giving you another generic list of side hustles, I’ve narrowed this guide down to 17 legitimate ways to make money online. For each one, I’ll show you what it pays, how you get paid, how quickly you can get your money, and whether it’s worth your time.

Comparison Table: What Each Way to Make Money Online Really Pays (2026 Index)

Data last checked: September 2026.

Before you read the detailed breakdowns, use this table to compare all 17 methods at a glance.

One important note: The advertised rate isn’t always what you actually earn. My realistic pay figures account for unpaid time, including screeners, applications, tests, setup, and other work you do before you get paid.

Outdated make-money-online claims debunked (2026 update)

While checking each platform’s own terms, I found six claims that many lists still repeat but are no longer true. KDP’s 70% royalty now goes up to $12.99, not $9.99. Depop no longer charges US sellers a 10% fee. Respondent takes 5% of each payout, even though it says “no fees.” UserTesting no longer publishes a $10-per-test rate. ShareASale is now part of Awin. And Amazon Mechanical Turk, which was on nearly every older list, shut down on September 30, 2026.

Make Money Online Fast

If you need to make money online quickly, start with methods that can pay within days rather than building a business from scratch.

These options can help you earn your first money online faster, although some require approval before you can start.

1. Sell your used stuff online

  • Top platforms: Vinted, eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Depop
  • Pay range: $12 to $20 an hour after fees (Side Hustle Real Wage Index)
  • Payout speed: Same day for local cash, 2 to 7 days if you ship
  • Upfront cost: $0
  • Requirements: Stuff you already own
  • Best for: Cash this week
  • Fact checked and verified: eBay, Vinted, Depop and Facebook Marketplace pages, September 3, 2026

If you need to make money online fast, selling things you already own is the best place to start. You don’t need a skill, a following, or a spot on a waiting list. You just need stuff, and it is already in your closet and garage.

I am guilty of this too. One of my basement closets is full of old computers, screens, keyboards and even a few old flip phones.

You take a few photos, list the item, and either ship it or hand it over in person. The money goes to your bank or PayPal a few days later. On a local cash sale, you have it the same day.

Here is a real example: A casual seller posted his results in a UK side hustle subreddit on August 7, 2026. He made about £1,400 (around $1,800) from 82 of his own items on Vinted and eBay between April and August 2026, and just over £1,000 of it came from Vinted.

Keep in mind that is one person’s results over five months, not a typical number.

How much can you earn from selling your old stuff?

Here is how the big four platforms stack up right now:

Marketplace Seller fee Paid by When you get paid
Vinted 0% Bank Up to about 4 days after delivery
eBay 13.6% + $0.30 to $0.40 Bank or debit card 1 to 2 days (new sellers: up to 31 days)
Facebook Marketplace 10%, $0.80 minimum PayPal or bank Same day local, 4 days shipped
Depop 3.3% + $0.45 Bank 2 days after delivery

What fees and payout delays should you expect?

  • Vinted is free because the buyer pays: Each buyer pays $0.70 plus 5% of the item price. You can cash out from $0.10.
  • Depop’s old 10% fee is gone for US sellers: You now pay only the 3.3% plus $0.45 payment processing fee.
  • eBay’s per-order fee depends on the order total: The $0.30 is for orders of $10 or less. Above $10, it is $0.40.
  • Your bank adds time: The table shows when the site releases your money. Vinted and Depop say up to 5 more days. eBay depends on the payout schedule you pick. Facebook depends on the payment method.
  • eBay can pay in 30 minutes: Once the money is available, an express payout costs a flat $2.00.
  • Depop has a backup date: If delivery is never confirmed, it pays you 10 business days after the sale.

Which selling app should you use?

Here is what I would use each of these selling apps for, and who can join:

  • Vinted, for clothes. Your first few sales lose nothing to fees. Ages 18+, or through a parent’s account if you are younger. Vinted does not publish a country list.
  • eBay, for everything else. Your first 250 listings a month are free, then $0.35 each. A few categories charge a different rate: 15.3% on books, movies and music, and 8% on sneakers over $150. If the buyer is outside the US, you pay an extra 1.65% fee. Ages 18+, open worldwide.
  • Facebook Marketplace, for bulky items and cash today. Past a certain sales total, Facebook asks for your SSN or ITIN and holds bank transfers until you give it. It does not publish a minimum age or country list I could check.
  • Depop, for trendy or vintage clothes. The 0% seller fee is only for the US, UK and Australia. Everywhere else, sellers pay 10%. You can join at 13, but you need to be 18 to get paid on your own. Open in 9 countries.

Why does eBay hold new sellers’ money for 31 days?

Because eBay wants proof you deliver.

If you are new, your money is released when the first of these happens:

  • 2 days after delivery is confirmed, if you used an eBay shipping label
  • 7 days after delivery, if you used your own label
  • 31 days after the buyer paid, no matter what

The hold ends once you have 10 completed sales worth $150 or more, with no more than 2 defects in the past 12 months. Until then, plan on waiting.

Does eBay charge fees on shipping and sales tax?

Yes, and it is not the only one. eBay, Facebook and Depop all take their cut from the total the buyer paid, and that total includes shipping and sales tax.

Two examples of what that costs you:

  • eBay: You sell a jacket for $40, and shipping and tax add $15. eBay takes its fee from $55, not $40.
  • Facebook: Meta’s own example is a $20 item with $5 shipping and $1 tax. The fee is $2.60, not $2.00.

So price the item with the fee in mind, not just the item price.

Does Facebook Marketplace charge a selling fee?

Only when you ship. Here is when you pay, and when you don’t:

  • Free: Local pickup, or the buyer pays you outside Facebook checkout, like by PayPal.
  • Fee: Any order shipped through Facebook checkout. In some states, Facebook also collects the sales tax for you.

What are Facebook Marketplace’s shipping rules?

  • Meta may keep part of the shipping cost. The shipping price shown to the buyer is a commercial rate. Meta says it may get a cheaper rate from the carrier and keep the difference.
  • You have 7 days to ship. Miss the deadline and Facebook cancels the order, even if the buyer agreed to wait.

Is selling stuff you already have a good way to make money online?

Yes, if you need cash fast. The money stops when the closet is empty, but nothing else on this list pays sooner.

My pick for each situation:

  • Cash by tomorrow: Facebook Marketplace with local pickup. No fee, no shipping wait.
  • Clearing out a wardrobe: Vinted first, so you keep 100% of your price.
  • Pricey tech, auto parts, collector items: eBay, where its 134 million active buyers can push the price up.

2. Get paid to test video games

  • Top platforms: PlaytestCloud
  • Pay range: $5 to $9 per 15-minute test
  • Payout speed: Up to 3 days, no minimum
  • Upfront cost: $0
  • Requirements: Android phone, iPhone or Windows PC, plus headphones
  • Best for: A few extra dollars a month, mostly on Android
  • Fact checked and verified: PlaytestCloud help pages, September 3, 2026

Game companies pay everyday gamers to test their games before release. They want to find bugs and spots where players get confused, and you get paid for pointing them out.

You play the game on your phone, follow a short list of tasks, and talk out loud the whole time. Your screen and voice are recorded. That is the whole job, and you don’t need to sell anything or have a special skill.

The one site I recommend for this is PlaytestCloud.

How much can you earn from PlaytestCloud?

Here is what PlaytestCloud says about pay, in its own words:

What PlaytestCloud’s terms
Pay per test $5 to $9 for 15 minutes plus a survey
Minimum payout None
Paid by Tremendous: PayPal, virtual Visa, gift card, or donation
PayPal fee 6%, taken from your reward
When you get paid Within 3 days of a good recording

Gift cards and the virtual Visa card carry no fee. So unless you need the cash in PayPal, pick one of those and keep the full amount.

Real tester feedback: how many invites does PlaytestCloud really send?

A long-time tester in the US, named Patrick F, posted a Trustpilot review on July 5, 2026. He said he gets only 1 to 3 tests a month, more than 99% of them are for Android, and the longest he has waited for payment is about 48 hours.

That is one person’s experience, but it matches what PlaytestCloud itself says about invites.

How many tests does PlaytestCloud send you?

PlaytestCloud does not promise a set number of tests.

Invites go out based on who the game studio wants, like your age, country, and the games you play, so you won’t qualify for every test.

Three things that get you more invites:

  • Keep your profile current: PlaytestCloud says a complete, up-to-date profile and device list improves your chances.
  • Answer fast: The tester above said you have to be quick, especially on the higher-paying tests, because spots fill up.
  • Use an Android phone: That is where nearly all the invites go, as the tester above found.

So the pay per test is good, but the number of tests is what limits how much you make.

Can you do PlaytestCloud on iPhone, PC or Mac?

iPhone and Windows PC, yes. Mac and Linux, no.

Here is what you need:

  • Android: Android 10 or newer
  • iPhone: iPhone 8 or newer, running iOS 16
  • PC: Windows only
  • Audio: Headphones or a headset for every test

PlaytestCloud is open worldwide, but it says most tests are for the US, UK and Canada, and testers elsewhere get fewer invites. It does not publish a minimum age. Signing up is free, and the onboarding test is unpaid.

Why does PlaytestCloud reject tests?

Because the recording has to be useful to the game studio.

PlaytestCloud says you won’t be paid if you:

  • Stay quiet instead of talking through what you are doing
  • Skip the tasks in the game
  • Don’t finish the survey at the end
  • Curse at the developers or break the code of conduct, which can also get you removed

Rejections can be appealed. One tester wrote on Trustpilot on April 12, 2026 that a couple of his tests were rejected, then paid after he appealed. And since you must talk the whole time, this is not a job you can do quietly at a desk.

Is PlaytestCloud worth it?

Yes, if you own an Android phone and want a few extra dollars without selling anything. Each test is short, pays well for the time, and you never have to wait to reach a cashout minimum. Just don’t count on it for regular income.

3. Get paid to record videos for AI

  • Top platforms: OneForma, Atlas Capture, Prolific, RWS TrainAI
  • Pay range: $2.60 to $4.20 per task on Atlas Capture; workers report $5 to $15 per recording elsewhere
  • Payout speed: Varies by platform
  • Upfront cost: $0
  • Requirements: A smartphone with a good camera and reliable internet
  • Best for: Quick tasks, if you are OK with the privacy tradeoff
  • Fact checked and verified: Live project listings and worker reports, September 2026

This is one of the newest ways to make money online.

Instead of taking surveys or testing websites, you get paid to record ordinary things you do around your house.

Why would anyone pay for that?

AI and robotics companies need real-world video showing how people interact with objects and environments.

For example, OneForma currently has a Real-World Video Recorder project that asks contributors to provide or record footage of real environments and actions for computer-vision research.

That can mean filming yourself folding laundry, loading a dishwasher, cooking, opening a drawer, or doing other simple household tasks from your own point of view.

How much can you make recording videos for AI?

There is no fixed hourly wage for this work.

Instead, you are paid a flat fee for each individual video or data task you successfully submit.

To give you an idea of exact earnings, here is what Atlas Capture pays contributors on its live task list:

  • Fold laundry, standing: $4.20 for a 4–6 minute video
  • Load the dishwasher: $3.80 for a 3–5 minute video
  • Label household object descriptions: $3.20 for 5–7 minutes of text labeling
  • Compare two AI responses: $2.80 for 4–5 minutes of feedback
  • Water plants, indoor: $2.60 for a 3–4 minute video

Tip: These platforms mix video tasks with text tasks. You can often choose between recording a physical chore, labeling objects, or giving feedback on AI text responses.

Real earnings reports: what AI video contributors actually make

While researching this post, I read a lot of reports from people who have done this work, mostly in work-from-home subreddits.

In one of those subreddits, a contributor said on August 19, 2026 that these jobs paid $5 to $15 per recording, depending on the scenario. They also told people to read the fine print on who owns the footage.

Another person in the same subreddit said on August 14, 2026 that they had done these jobs before. They said it was usually recording basic chores like folding laundry, and that the jobs were real and did pay.

What’s interesting is that this pay is higher than every task on Atlas Capture’s list. That is normal for this kind of work. Pay depends on the project, and the better-paying projects are the ones people post about.

Where can you find AI video recording jobs?

These gigs are starting to pop up across several popular research and AI-data networks.

Here is where to find paid AI video recording jobs:

  • Prolific: Researchers can now collect video, images, and audio from participants, including videos of people completing physical activities.
  • OneForma: Its current Real-World Video Recorder project pays a fixed rate for approved video assets.
  • RWS TrainAI: RWS runs AI data-collection projects that include video and other types of real-world data.
  • Atlas Capture: Offers paid recording tasks through its iPhone app, including everyday household activities.

Keep in mind that project availability changes daily, so log in often to catch new ones.

What happens to your footage and your privacy?

Before you sign up, you need to know exactly what happens to your footage.

The real cost of this side hustle isn’t your time, it is your privacy.

You may accidentally film your home layout, family members, or personal items in the background.

Every platform handles this data differently.

For example:

  • OneForma: Strictly accepts footage only if it contains zero personally identifiable information or privacy violations.
  • Atlas Capture: Fully encrypts your recordings and uses them to train AI. They claim that faces and identifying details are redacted during review.

So always read the specific project’s consent terms before recording anything you wouldn’t want sitting inside a public AI dataset.

So is recording videos to train AI worth it?

Yes. If you are comfortable with the privacy tradeoff, this is a legitimate and highly flexible new side hustle.

Sign up for platforms like OneForma and Atlas Capture, and treat these recording tasks as occasional extra cash.

4. Earn money from paid interviews and diary studies

  • Top platforms: dscout, User Interviews, Respondent, Askable
  • Pay range: $25 to $400 per study
  • Payout speed: 1 to 10 business days after you finish
  • Upfront cost: $0
  • Requirements: A phone or computer, depending on the study
  • Best for: A few well-paid hours a month
  • Fact checked and verified: dscout, User Interviews, Respondent and Askable pages, September 3, 2026

If you like sharing your opinions, paid user interviews and diary studies are some of the better-paying options in this guide.

Companies pay you to talk about how you shop, bank, work, or use their apps. A study might be a 45-minute video call, a usability task, or a diary you keep on your phone for a few days.

The work is easy once you get picked. Getting picked is the hard part, and I will get to that. First, the money.

How much can you earn from user testing and interviews?

Here is what each site says it pays, and how the money reaches you:

Platform Advertised pay Paid by When you get paid
dscout $25 to $150 per mission PayPal After you finish every task; timing varies by mission
User Interviews Over $45 average per study Tremendous gift card 1 to 2 days, or up to 10 business days if the researcher pays you directly
Respondent $50 to $400+, average $75 per 45 minutes Tremendous gift card 7 to 10 business days after the researcher confirms you took part
Askable Up to $100 per hour PayPal or e-gift card, by country Up to 5 business days to approve, then 3 to 7 days to arrive

Those are advertised rates. What you actually make depends on how often you get picked.

So what can you realistically earn?

Here is a real example. A UK saver posted his April to August 2026 Askable earnings in a UK side hustle subreddit on August 7, 2026. He made £155 across 12 studies. Most were quick £5 surveys, and one 45-minute call paid £35. That is one person’s results over five months, not a typical income.

The lesson? Don’t rely on one site. Each one attracts different studies, so signing up for all four gives you more chances to match.

Which user testing and interview site should you sign up for first?

Here is what each one is good for, and who can join:

  • dscout: Known for “missions,” which can be interviews, diary studies, retail visits, or website reviews. You need the dscout app on an iPhone or Android phone. Open to ages 13+ in the US and 16+ in Europe, with a parent’s consent under 18.
  • User Interviews: The biggest selection of studies. It says participants have earned more than $60 million on the platform, and it recruits in 34 countries.
  • Respondent: Best if you have professional experience researchers want, since it focuses on interviews and focus groups. Ages 18+, in 150+ countries.
  • Askable: The easiest to join from outside the US. Ages 13+, in 42 countries. In many of them, PayPal is the only payout option.

Before you accept your first study, there is one more thing to check: what the site can take back.

Does Respondent really have no fees?

No. Respondent’s marketing page says “no fees,” but its help center and participant terms both spell out a 5% processing cut, with a $1 minimum, on every payout.

Those same terms also let Respondent take back money it already paid you if it later decides your answers were inaccurate or a duplicate.

Askable has its own rule. If you don’t mark yourself as Completed within the required window, you can lose the payment even after doing the study. A high advertised payout only matters if you actually keep it.

Do you get paid for applying to these studies?

No, and this is the biggest hidden cost. Most of your time on these sites goes to applying for studies you never get.

dscout is the clearest example. Applications there are unpaid and work like an audition. You record your answers, submit them, and wait to see if the researcher picks you. So I would not count application time as paid work. You may apply to several studies before one pays.

Are paid user studies a good way to make money online?

Yes, if you treat it as occasional extra money. Paid user testing offers some of the best-paid hours in this guide, but it is one of the least reliable ways to earn every week. Sign up for all four sites, apply often, and don’t plan your budget around it.

5. Get paid to test websites and apps

  • Top platforms: UserTesting, Userbrain, UserCrowd, Userlytics
  • Pay range: $0.20 to $50 per test
  • Payout speed: 14 days on UserTesting; varies on smaller panels
  • Upfront cost: $0
  • Requirements: A computer with a mic; some tests run on a phone
  • Best for: Filler income when other sites are quiet
  • Fact checked and verified: UserTesting support pages and dated reports from smaller panels, September 3, 2026

Website and app testing is another way to make money online by giving companies feedback on their websites, apps and digital products. You visit a website or app, complete a task, and say what you are thinking out loud while your screen records.

The tests are usually short, and the work itself is easy. The catch is that you do not get paid for every test you see, and much of the screening time is unpaid. More on that below.

How much can you earn from website and app testing?

There is no standard rate for website and app testing. What you earn depends on the platform, the test length, the type of test and demand.

Here is a comparison table of the 4 sites I recommend:

Platform Advertised pay Paid by When you get paid
UserTesting Varies; shown before each test PayPal 14 days after you upload
Userbrain $5 per approved test PayPal After your balance hits $10
UserCrowd $0.20 to $1 per test PayPal 7 to 30 days after request
Userlytics $10 to $50 per study PayPal Every two weeks (on Fridays)

UserTesting no longer publishes a standard test rate. Its support page says pay varies by test type, length and customer demand, with the exact amount shown on your dashboard. So I would not repeat the commonly quoted “$10 for a 20-minute test” as an official UserTesting rate.

So what does this add up to in real life?

The same UK saver from the last section also posted his testing panel earnings for April to August 2026:

Platform Reported earnings
UserCrowd $78.09 over five months
Userbrain £20 over five months
Userlytics €20 over five months
Feedbacked £3 over five months

Small numbers, but they cost little time to collect. They also show why joining several panels beats waiting on one platform to send you work.

Which website testing sites should you sign up for first?

I would start with UserTesting and then add several smaller panels rather than relying on one source of tests.

Here is what each one is good for, and who can join:

  • UserTesting: A major testing platform where you can test websites, apps and other digital products. It posts new opportunities regularly, but you must qualify for individual tests. Open to ages 18 and up. It does not share a fixed list of eligible countries, because the list changes.
  • Userbrain: Focuses on short website, app and prototype tests that take 5 to 20 minutes each.
  • UserCrowd: Offers quick tests and occasional longer interviews.
  • Userlytics: Offers usability studies involving websites, apps and other digital products.

Joining several platforms does not guarantee more work, but it gives you more chances to find a test that matches your profile, device and location. Before you start, though, you should know where the unpaid time hides.

Does UserTesting pay for screeners and practice tests?

No. The practice test is unpaid, and so are screeners. You can spend time answering screening questions only to find out that you do not qualify.

That unpaid time is what makes the real hourly rate lower than the headline numbers suggest. If you keep getting screened out, the smaller panels give you more chances at paid work.

Can UserTesting cancel tests you already finished?

Yes, there is at least one detailed report of that. On UserTesting’s Trustpilot page, a tester wrote on September 1, 2026 that over $150 in pending tests were suddenly canceled during what UserTesting later admitted was a system-wide error.

He said his support ticket was closed without an explanation or a refund.

That is one person’s experience, not proof of a pattern.

For context, UserTesting holds a 4.4 rating from 3,729 Trustpilot reviews, on a company profile that pays for a Trustpilot subscription.

So I would treat pending test money as not yours yet. It only counts once it lands in your PayPal account.

What equipment do you need for website testing?

Before signing up, check whether your computer and internet connection meet the platform’s requirements.

UserTesting, for example, publishes specific minimum requirements:

  • Operating system: Windows 10 (64-bit) or later, or macOS 12 or later
  • RAM: At least 8 GB
  • Free storage: At least 20 GB
  • Screen resolution: 1920×1080
  • Upload speed: At least 5 Mbps
  • Browser: Chrome, Edge or Firefox on Windows; Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari on Mac

UserTesting also supports testing from iOS and Android devices, although the requirements vary by device. A microphone matters because thinking out loud is a basic part of most website usability tests.

Slow internet or an incompatible computer can prevent you from taking tests, so check your setup before spending time applying.

Is website testing a good way to make money online?

Yes, if you treat it as filler income. The tests themselves are easy enough, but unpaid screening and inconsistent availability bring down the real hourly rate.

One more thing before you sign up: you cannot do this quietly at a desk job. Talking out loud while you test is a condition of getting paid for most recorded usability tests.

6. Participate in paid research studies

  • Top platforms: Prolific, CloudResearch Connect
  • Pay range: At least $8 an hour on Prolific
  • Payout speed: Within 24 hours on Prolific, $6 minimum
  • Upfront cost: $0
  • Requirements: On Prolific: photo ID, PayPal, 18+, a supported country
  • Study length: Most take 5 to 30 minutes
  • Best for: Steady small payments, once you are off the waitlist
  • Fact checked and verified: Prolific and CloudResearch Connect help centers, September 3, 2026

If you want to get paid to take surveys, paid research studies are usually a much better option than ordinary survey sites. Universities, researchers, and companies pay you to take part in real research, not just to share your opinion about a product.

You might answer academic surveys, take part in psychology research, or do other online research tasks.

The two main sites are Prolific and CloudResearch Connect. Prolific comes first.

How much does Prolific pay?

Prolific requires researchers to pay participants at least $8 an hour. It recommends $12 an hour or more.

Prolific also figures your hourly rate from how long people really take, not from the researcher’s guess. So the rate you see is based on real times.

People do make real money on it. In a r/HonestSideHustles thread posted September 1, 2026, one user said they earned $155.55 from Prolific in August.

Your own pay depends on how many studies you qualify for and how fast you claim them.

Your profile matters too, because researchers can pick people by age, location, experience, and other traits.

Who can join Prolific?

  • Age: You must be 18 or older.
  • Country: You must live in a country Prolific supports. It supports most OECD countries, and its list names 52 countries in total.
  • ID: You must verify your identity with a photo ID before you can do studies. You do not need to give your Social Security number.

Meeting these rules doesn’t get you in right away, though.

How long is the Prolific waitlist?

Prolific has a sign-up waitlist, and invitations are not first come, first served. Some people get invited within hours, while others wait months or longer. Your wait depends on whether Prolific needs people with your demographics and expertise, and it says it cannot fast-track anyone.

Tip: Join the waitlist as soon as you can.

How does Prolific pay you?

Once you’re accepted, getting paid is fairly simple:

  • Minimum cash-out: $6 in approved earnings.
  • Balances: Your dollar and pound balances count toward the same $6 threshold.
  • Payment method: PayPal.
  • How fast you get paid: Within 24 hours

New-user catch: Until your first four withdrawals, you must wait 72 hours between cash-outs. After your fourth cash-out, you can generally withdraw once every 24 hours. Prolific says these waiting periods are security measures and cannot be removed or expedited.

Warning: Prolific may put accounts on hold for things like using a VPN to disguise your location, connecting a PayPal account to another Prolific account, or using automated tools to answer studies. The good news is that Prolific says you can still cash out approved earnings if your account is on hold or an appeal is unsuccessful.

How does CloudResearch Connect work?

CloudResearch Connect is a second site for paid studies and surveys. It matches researchers who need people for online studies with people who will do them, then pays you for your time.

New applicants go through a review that can take up to 30 days. Connect says most applications are processed faster.

What is the Connect Quality Score?

Connect rolled out a new Participant Quality Score in August 2026. The score changes how participants are ranked for new projects.

Some users are unhappy about it. One participant reported 424 approved surveys and only two rejections, but no new studies after the score started. Others reported low scores and trouble getting them raised.

That doesn’t mean you’ll have the same experience. Just keep it in mind as you use the site.

How does CloudResearch Connect pay?

Connect gives you three ways to get paid:

Payment method Minimum Maximum
PayPal $5 $100
Bank transfer $25 $250
Amazon gift card $5* $100

Connect’s current participant help center lists a $5 minimum for Amazon gift cards, although CloudResearch’s main Connect participant page says there is no minimum. Amazon gift card withdrawals are currently disabled and are expected to return.

PayPal and bank transfers can be made once per day. Bank transfers can take up to 1–2 business days to reach your bank account. If you live outside the US, PayPal is your only cash-out option.

Are paid research studies worth it?

Join both sites. Study availability changes from day to day, so a study you don’t qualify for on one site may be open on the other. Joining both gives you more chances to earn instead of waiting weeks for the next study.

7. Get paid to be an online mock juror

  • Top platforms: OnlineVerdict, eJury, JuryTest
  • Pay range: $5 to $60 per online case; up to $700 for OnlineVerdict trials
  • Payout speed: Within 7 business days (JuryTest) to 1 to 2 weeks by mailed check (OnlineVerdict)
  • Upfront cost: $0
  • Requirements: Desktop or laptop; webcam and mic for virtual trials
  • Best for: US adults who want occasional extra cash
  • Fact checked and verified: OnlineVerdict, eJury and JuryTest juror pages, September 3 and 9, 2026

Lawyers need regular people to review their cases before they go to court. This helps them practice and see how a real jury might think.

As a mock juror, you get paid to review cases and give lawyers your opinion on how a real jury might react.

You can earn anywhere from $5 to $700 per case depending on the platform and format.

How does mock jurying work?

When you sign up, you will generally get three types of jobs:

  • Online Case Reviews: You read case details or watch a short video whenever you want. You answer a few questions at the end. These take 20 to 60 minutes.
  • Virtual Trials: You watch both sides present their case, usually over Zoom. Afterward, you discuss the case with other jurors. These take 2 to 10 hours. You must use a computer with a working webcam and mic. Phones are not allowed.
  • In-Person Trials: OnlineVerdict sometimes hosts local, live events. These take a full day or longer.

Tip: On JuryTest, keep a close eye on your email inbox. New case invites arrive with the subject line “e-juror summons.”

Are mock jury sites legit?

Yes, online mock jury sites are legitimate. The top three networks have been around for years.

In the Reddit threads I read, no one said they weren’t paid. The only common complaint is that it’s hard to get selected for a case.

None of these platforms is BBB accredited, but all three have BBB profiles:

  • OnlineVerdict: Its primary Illinois page holds an A+ rating with no reviews, and the BBB file goes back to 2009. A separate San Diego page holds a B- rating because one complaint went unanswered.
  • JuryTest: BBB lists it as Jury Associates, with Jury Test Networks as another name. It holds an A+ rating and was established in 2002. Its president is the only employee listed, so it’s a very small business.
  • eJury: BBB lists it as “Not Rated” simply because it needs more data. It has no customer reviews. BBB says it has been in business since 1999.

How much money do mock jury sites pay?

Your total earnings depend entirely on the platform you choose and the time you invest.

Platform & Case Type Pay Listed Payout Method Payout Speed
OnlineVerdict: Case Review $30 to $60 (30 to 60 mins) Check by mail 1 to 2 weeks
OnlineVerdict: Virtual Trial $75 to $700 (2 to 10 hours) Check by mail Not listed
OnlineVerdict: In-Person Trial $200 to $700 (1+ days) Check, sometimes cash Not listed
eJury: Short Case $5 to $10 (~35 mins) PayPal Not listed
JuryTest: Video Case $20 to $50 (20 to 50 mins) PayPal or Check Within 7 business days

Good to know:

  1. Don’t count on $700. OnlineVerdict lists $30 to $350 as typical.
  2. You see the pay upfront. Every OnlineVerdict invite shows the case type, date, time, and exact pay before you accept.
  3. Pay comes by mail. OnlineVerdict mails a check 1 to 2 weeks after the case, and uses Venmo, Zelle or PayPal only if the check gets lost in the mail.

How much mock jurors say they got paid

Here are a few examples I found of actual mock jurors talking about how much they made:

  • OnlineVerdict: In October 2025, one juror said legal focus groups paid $100 to $250 each and that they made $350 that year. They said payment arrived by mailed check, and that these sites “desperately need men” because most of the people who sign up are stay-at-home moms. In July 2026, another user reported being offered either $200 for 4pm to 8pm or $300 for 9am to 3pm.
  • eJury: In July 2026, one user reported earning about $8 per case, and only qualifying for about four cases a year.
  • JuryTest: In March 2022, one user reported that a case took about 2.5 hours and that “the pay was good,” after waiting close to a year for the invitation. A separate 2018 blog write-up described a three-hour case that paid $90, which is well above JuryTest’s published $20 to $50 range, so treat it as an unusual high, not the norm.

Which mock jury site should you join first?

I recommend signing up for all three. Joining more than one site gives you more chances to get picked.

Platform Best for Who can join
OnlineVerdict Big paydays 18+, U.S. citizen, local case area
eJury Quick cash from home 18+, U.S. citizen, no felonies; no legal workers
JuryTest Flexible video cases No age or citizenship rule listed

OnlineVerdict offers virtual and in-person trials plus online case reviews. eJury focuses on shorter cases. JuryTest lets you watch video arguments on your own schedule and lists the fastest payouts of the three.

Why is it so hard to get picked for mock jury cases?

Even if you qualify for every site, you might wait months or years for an invite.

One JuryTest user waited nearly a full year before getting their first case.

Your invitation rate depends on two main factors:

  • Your local lawyers: OnlineVerdict says the number of cases depends on how many attorneys are in your area. Large metro areas usually have more cases than smaller counties.
  • Your exact location: eJury started in Tarrant and Dallas Counties in Texas. Jurors there get about one case every week, while other counties get far fewer.

So is getting paid as a mock juror worth it?

Yes. Mock jurying is worth it as a side hustle as long as you do not expect a steady paycheck. Sign up for OnlineVerdict, eJury, and JuryTest for $0 upfront. Treat every case invite as extra cash.

Make Money Online With Your Skills

If you want a steady hourly wage rather than a quick cash injection, you need legitimate online jobs and remote freelance gigs.

These platforms pay you for your time and skills, like organizing, writing, teaching or training AI models. Most of them make you apply first. Once you’re in, the pay is usually steadier than the fast methods above. Some work, like AI training, can still come in bursts.

8. Find AI training jobs

  • Top platforms: DataAnnotation, Outlier
  • Pay range: $17 to $25 an hour real pay (Side Hustle Real Wage Index); $20 to $50+ advertised for general and multilingual work, up to $150+ for coding
  • Payout speed: Outlier every Tuesday; DataAnnotation every 3 days
  • Upfront cost: $0
  • Requirements: Computer, photo ID, 18+; a degree or equivalent experience
  • Best for: High pay in bursts, not steady hours
  • Fact checked and verified: Platform FAQs, live listings and worker reports, September 21, 2026

AI companies need real humans to test, train, and improve their artificial intelligence models. As an AI trainer, you will compare chatbot answers, fact-check claims, write creative prompts, rank text responses, and evaluate AI-generated images or audio clips.

Two of the better-known platforms are DataAnnotation and Outlier.

How much can you make training AI?

While AI training offers some of the highest hourly wages in the gig economy, your pay depends entirely on your specialized skills.

Here is what DataAnnotation publishes for its current hourly roles:

Role Category Advertised Hourly Pay Ideal Background
General projects Starting at $25–$50+/hr Rating chatbot answers and comparing AI outputs
Multilingual projects Starting at $20+/hr Fluent bilingual speakers and translators
Coding projects Starting at $40–$150+/hr Programmers who can check and debug code
STEM projects Starting at $40–$125+/hr Master’s or PhD in math, physics, biology or chemistry
Professional projects Starting at $40–$125+/hr Licensed credentials in law, finance or medicine

Specialist rates: Do not assume you will make $125 or $150 an hour. The top tiers need licensed credentials in law, finance or medicine, a master’s or PhD for STEM work, or real coding skill. Professionals like these can also get paid for answering questions in their field.

Does AI training pay the same in every country?

Platform rates change heavily based on where you live. For example, on September 14, 2026, Outlier listed the exact same Android AI Evaluator job at up to $31 an hour for workers in Japan and South Korea, but only up to $8 an hour for workers in Mexico.

How do DataAnnotation and Outlier pay you?

While both sites pay reliably, they handle their payout rules very differently. Outlier uses an automated weekly cycle, while DataAnnotation lets you request your own payouts after a brief approval period.

Feature DataAnnotation Outlier AI
Payment Method PayPal PayPal, AirTM, or ACH
Minimum Payout Not published $0 (no minimum published)
Payout Frequency Within a few days after you request it Weekly, every Tuesday
Approval Wait Not published Previous Tuesday–Monday work cycle
Availability Not published See Outlier’s country list

Why AI training work can stop without warning

AI training platforms are known for sudden shifts in workload. The work comes in bursts, and your account can be paused without warning.

Here are two reported examples:

DataAnnotation Experience: One worker who joined in early August 2026 passed all entry tests and quickly made $750. Right after that, their available task dashboard completely emptied out.

Outlier Experience: A veteran worker spent two full years on Outlier, logged thousands of hours, and earned top-performer titles. Despite that record, they suddenly lost account access anyway.

Is AI training work worth it?

AI training work offers some of the best hourly pay on this list when it’s actually available, and you can do it quietly from your laptop. But the pay you see advertised belongs to specialists, the work comes in bursts, DataAnnotation can refuse to pay for work it judges subpar, and Outlier can hold back pay you already earned if it decides you broke its terms.

9. Specialized freelance writing

  • Top platforms: Upwork, Reedsy
  • Pay range: $15 to $30 an hour real pay (Side Hustle Real Wage Index); $20 to $60+ advertised
  • Payout speed: Upwork weekly, after about a 10-day hold
  • Upfront cost: $0, but Upwork Connects cost $0.15 each
  • Requirements: Deep knowledge of a field from work, a business or a serious hobby
  • Best for: People with a real specialty
  • Fact checked and verified: Upwork and Reedsy rate and fee pages, September 2026

AI has changed the writing world.

It can churn out generic articles in seconds, which means traditional beginner writing jobs are mostly gone.

Spend ten minutes in the freelance writing subreddit and you will see the same story again and again.

In a 2026 thread on the r/freelanceWriters subreddit, a writer with 10 years of experience shared a harsh truth: the SEO content market simply doesn’t exist anymore, and that market was exactly where newbies could get their first assignments.

But the good news is that you can still make good money writing if you bring something AI doesn’t automatically have: real knowledge of a subject.

In that same subreddit, a moderator with 37 years in the trade said she picked up three new client leads in ten days and a $4,000 project. Her field is law, and a finance writer and a medical writer said the same thing.

You don’t need to be a professional writer to get paid to write. You need something useful to write about.

That could be law, healthcare, technology, finance, construction, automotive repair, real estate, business, or a specialized hobby. Your expertise can come from years of work, running a business, professional training, or hands-on experience.

Tip: Don’t expect your first pitch to land a client. Writers in those threads put cold-pitch reply rates at roughly 3% to 5%, and a reply doesn’t necessarily mean a hire. In one August 2026 discussion, several writers told a beginner who had sent 36 pitches with no replies to think in terms of 300 to 500 pitches, not 36.

How much can you make with specialized freelance writing?

Your earning potential depends heavily on your specific niche.

According to official Upwork marketplace data, typical hourly ranges for specialized writers include:

  • Grant Writers: $35 to $60 per hour.
  • Medical Writers: $23 to $50 per hour.
  • Technical Writers: $20 to $45 per hour.
  • Business Writers: $20 to $50 per hour.

Where to find well-paying writing clients

Instead of looking at generic job boards, target freelance marketplaces where businesses actively hunt for experts.

Feature Upwork Reedsy
Best For Beginners and intermediate niche experts Experienced publishing pros and ghostwriters
Acceptance Rate High (open marketplace) Extremely low (~3%)
Application Costs Uses Connects ($0.15 each) Free to apply
Platform Fees 0% to 15% per client contract 10% of your earnings, 7% after $15,000
Payout Speed Weekly billing cycle (~10-day hold) Depends on contract terms

1. Upwork

Upwork is the most realistic starting point for new freelancers. Clients post jobs, and you bid on them using digital tokens called Connects. You get a few free Connects to start.

2. Reedsy

Reedsy is a selective marketplace for book editors, ghostwriters, and publishing pros. It rejects about 97% of applicants. You will need a proven professional publishing history and years of verifiable experience to pass their strict review team.

Is freelance writing still worth it?

Freelance writing is a great income option if you have real-world expertise. AI has replaced cheap, generic text, but it has actually made human experts who truly know what they are talking about more valuable than ever.

10. Become a virtual assistant

  • Top platforms: Boldly, BELAY, Time etc, Upwork, Fancy Hands
  • Pay range: $13 to $30 an hour; Fancy Hands does not publish a rate
  • Payout speed: Normal payroll at Boldly; BELAY pays its contractors monthly
  • Upfront cost: $0
  • Requirements: Computer, fast internet, office skills; top agencies want 1 to 8 years of experience
  • Location: Mostly US roles at the top agencies
  • Best for: The closest thing to a regular job
  • Fact checked and verified: Platform hiring pages and U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, September 21, 2026

Virtual assistant (VA) work is basically office or administrative work you do remotely. Depending on the job, you might manage email and calendars, schedule appointments, research information, enter data, handle customer service, or help with marketing and other administrative tasks.

It can be a good way to make money online if you already have office, administrative, customer service, or similar experience.

How much money do virtual assistants make?

There is no single baseline wage for virtual assistant work. Your total income depends entirely on whether you work as a W-2 employee, an independent 1099 contractor, a marketplace freelancer, or a task-based worker.

Here are some real-world examples:

Company or source Published pay Type of work
Boldly $27–$30/hour W-2 employee positions
BELAY $20–$23/hour 1099 virtual executive assistant
Time etc From $17/hour Freelance assistant work
Upwork $13/hour median Global freelance marketplace
Fancy Hands Not published Task-based assistant work, with more pay as you progress

For another reference point, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a $23.23 hourly median for secretaries and administrative assistants as of May 2025.

That is regular employee pay, not freelance VA pay, but it gives you a useful comparison for similar administrative work.

How many hours do virtual assistants really get?

When choosing a VA platform, the available hours matter just as much as the hourly pay rate. A high hourly quote will not help you pay your bills if you only get a few hours of work every month.

Look at how actual hours differ across platforms:

  • Time etc: The platform reports that its average freelance assistant works about 39 hours a month. At their $17 starting rate, that equals roughly $663 a month before taxes. Time etc openly states that its flexible setup is not meant to replace a full-time income.
  • Boldly: This platform provides structured W-2 positions. Their applicant FAQ requires you to be available for at least 20 hours a week (4 hours a day, Monday through Friday during core business hours). They also offer full-time executive roles at 40 hours a week that include paid time off and 401(k) matching.
  • BELAY: This network offers independent 1099 contractor roles. While it pays a strong $20 to $23 an hour, it provides no guaranteed hours or automated assignments.

Is virtual assistant work worth it?

VA work is worth considering if you already have office, customer service, or administrative skills and want a way to earn money from home without paying to get started. But the pay can vary widely, and some jobs offer inconsistent hours or pay by the task instead of by the hour. I’d focus on VA jobs with steady hours and clear pay rather than chasing the highest advertised hourly rate.

11. Make money tutoring online

  • Top platforms: Cambly, Preply, Wyzant, italki
  • Pay range: $10 to $17 an hour real pay (Side Hustle Real Wage Index); $10 to $25+ advertised
  • Payout speed: Preply after the student confirms the lesson; Wyzant on the 1st and 15th; Cambly weekly once you are owed $20
  • Upfront cost: $0
  • Requirements: Laptop with HD webcam, fast internet, subject knowledge; most sites 18+
  • Best for: Native English speakers and subject experts
  • Fact checked and verified: Cambly, Preply, Wyzant and italki tutor pages, September 2026

If you know a subject well, online tutoring can be one of the easier ways to turn something you already know into extra money.

You teach students over video, usually one-on-one, in subjects such as English, foreign languages, math, science, test prep, and more.

The key to succeeding here is understanding how each platform handles its pricing, commission structures, and student matchmaking.

How much can you make tutoring online?

There is no single online tutoring rate. In my Side Hustle Real Wage Index, tutoring came out at $10 to $17 an hour after commission and unpaid time.

Here is what several popular platforms currently publish:

Platform Published pay How it works
Cambly $10.20/hour
$12/hour for Cambly Kids
Fixed rate
Preply $15–$25/hour average for English tutors You set your rate
Wyzant You set your rate You keep 75% of your posted rate for marketplace students
italki You set your rate 0% commission on trial lessons

Government Benchmark: For comparison, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a median hourly wage of $20.84 for tutors in May 2025. This covers all tutors (including local, in-person academic tutors), so treat it as a broad industry baseline.

Real tutor experience: One tutor on Reddit reported working about 10 hours a week and charging €20 per class for school students and €30 for business communication. She had more than five years of teaching experience and found private students through classified ads, Facebook groups, and WhatsApp groups.

That is one tutor’s experience, not a typical or guaranteed income. But it shows that finding your own students can be another way to make money tutoring online without relying entirely on a tutoring marketplace.

How much do tutoring sites take in commission?

When you set your own rate, the rate you advertise isn’t always what you take home.

The platform’s commission can make a big difference in how much you actually earn.

Here are two examples:

Platform Commission Rate Take-Home on $10 Rate
Preply 33% (drops to 18% after 400 hrs) $6.70 (new) up to $8.20 (experienced)
Wyzant 25% marketplace fee (0% for self-referred) $7.50 (marketplace) or $10.00 (self-referred)

So, always look at what you actually keep per lesson, rather than comparing the hourly rates tutors advertise.

Also, pay attention to Wyzant’s payment deadlines. According to its payment policy, you must enter lesson information within 14 days. If you miss that deadline, you may not be paid for the lesson.

Do tutoring sites pay for trial lessons?

When comparing tutoring networks, pay close attention to how they handle introductory trial lessons.

For example, Preply takes 100% of the fee from your very first trial lesson with a new student.

So if you get 10 new students and teach 10 trial lessons, none of those 10 lessons adds money to your Preply balance. Preply’s model assumes the trial gives you an opportunity to turn the student into a regular customer.

This matters most when you are new and still building your student base. You can spend significant time teaching trials before you start earning from those students.

Real tutor experience: One Preply tutor on Reddit said they started at just $5 an hour and later raised their rate to $14. They described starting that low as “the worst decision” because it was difficult to move up from such a low rate. At the time, they were getting more than five trial lessons a week.

Other platforms handle trial lessons differently. italki charges 0% commission on trial lessons, while Wyzant does not charge its 25% platform fee when you bring the student yourself.

Which tutoring platform is best for beginners?

The best online tutoring platform depends on what you want to teach, how much control you want, and how you want to find students.

Here is how the main tutoring sites compare for beginners:

Platform Best for Main catch
Cambly Beginners who speak English natively New tutor applications are limited
Preply Setting your own rate; languages and subjects You compete for students
Wyzant U.S. academic tutors Focused on the U.S. market
italki Language tutors Applications can close for some languages

Cambly is the simplest option if you want to start teaching English online without teaching credentials. You do not set your own rate, and Cambly pays by talk time, so you do not have to spend unpaid time preparing lessons or teaching trial lessons.

So is online tutoring worth it?

Yes. Online tutoring is a good side hustle if you have clear expertise in a high-demand subject. AI chatbots can answer basic homework questions for free, but human tutors still matter because they offer personalized motivation, real-time speech feedback, and structured human conversation.

Sell Products Online

These methods work differently from everything above. Instead of getting paid for each hour you work, you create or source something, like a book, a digital product or items for an online shop, and you earn money when it sells.

Sales usually take a while to build, so expect slow months at the start. The upside is that one good product can keep selling long after you made it.

12. Sell digital products, courses and coaching

  • Top platforms: Gumroad, Payhip
  • Pay range: $5 to $5,000+ a month, depending on your product and traffic
  • Payout speed: Gumroad weekly after a 7-day hold, once you have $100; Payhip instantly to PayPal or Stripe
  • Upfront cost: $0; ads cost extra
  • Requirements: A computer and a useful skill
  • Best for: Selling one product many times
  • Fact checked and verified: Gumroad and Payhip fee pages, September 15, 2026

If you know how to do something useful, you can turn that knowledge into real cash online.

You can package your skills into digital files like Notion templates, Google Sheets calculators, printable planners, or online courses. If you prefer working directly with people, you can also offer one-on-one coaching.

The goal is simple: create a digital product that solves a specific problem. Once it’s ready, you can sell it repeatedly without making a physical copy.

How much can you make selling digital products?

Your income depends on what you sell and how many people see it. There is no fixed income limit, but building consistent sales takes time.

To give you an idea, here are two examples I found during my research:

  • Google Sheets Creator: One professional made $11,000 over three years selling a custom industry tool.
  • Notion Template Creator: Another creator makes $5,000–$6,000 a month, but said it took seven months of hard work to reach that level.

These are individual seller reports, not typical earnings. They do show what is possible when you have a useful product and a way to get it in front of buyers.

What digital products should you sell?

The easiest products to create are often things you’ve already made to solve a real problem.

Don’t make a generic “budget planner.”

Make something specific.

  • Notion templates for business tracking or daily habits
  • Google Sheets spreadsheets and calculators
  • Printable planners and classroom worksheets
  • Checklists and how-to guides
  • Short ebooks and online video courses

Gumroad vs. Payhip: where should you sell?

Both platforms let you open a store for free without a monthly subscription. However, their fees and features differ.

Platform Best For Free Plan Fee
Gumroad Templates, ebooks, memberships 10% + $0.50 per sale
Payhip Downloads, courses, coaching 5% per sale

What are Gumroad’s fees?

Gumroad has no monthly fee, so you only pay its transaction fee when you make a sale. The 50-cent fee hits cheap products harder: on a $5 sale, it alone equals 10% of the price.

Gumroad also handles all sales tax collection as of January 2025, so you do not deal with that yourself.

Under Gumroad’s payout rules, you need at least $100 in your balance to get paid. On the weekly schedule, money from a sale sits for at least 7 days first. US bank accounts are paid on Thursdays, and PayPal on Fridays.

What are Payhip’s fees?

Payhip’s free plan charges 5% per sale with no flat $0.50 fee.

You can also upgrade to a $29/month plan with a 2% fee or a $99/month plan with no transaction fee.

Hidden processing fee: PayPal or Stripe also charges its own processing fee, typically around 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction.

How to get customers for your digital products

Creating the product is only half the job. You also need a way to get it in front of people who might buy it.

Traffic source How it can help
Gumroad Discover Helps new buyers find your products (30% fee on those sales)
Social media Show your product to a targeted audience
SEO or email Build your own source of traffic
Paid ads Pay to get your product in front of potential buyers

Neither Gumroad nor Payhip is a big marketplace like Amazon where shoppers are already browsing. Gumroad’s Discover feature brings some buyers to you, but at a 30% fee on those sales. With Payhip, all your traffic comes from you: your social media, your website, your email list, or ads.

For example, one seller in the same r/passive_income thread said advertising was necessary for their digital-product business.

You may not need ads if you can get enough buyers through search, social media, an email list, or your own website, but you do need some reliable way to bring people to your product.

Are digital products worth it?

This is not a fast way to make money. It can take months before you make anything meaningful. But if you already have a useful skill or have built something that solves a specific problem, it has a high income ceiling because you can sell the same digital product repeatedly.

13. Make money self-publishing on Kindle

  • Top platforms: Amazon KDP
  • Pay range: 35% or 70% royalty per ebook sale, plus Kindle Unlimited page reads
  • Payout speed: Monthly, about 60 days after the end of the sale month
  • Upfront cost: $0
  • Requirements: A computer and a finished manuscript
  • Best for: Long-term royalties from one book
  • Fact checked and verified: KDP royalty pages and my own payout records, September 2026

If you love to write or have expert knowledge to share, Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is one of the best-known ways to earn passive income from a book.

You write a book once, upload it to Amazon for free, and earn ongoing royalties whenever people buy it or read it through Kindle Unlimited.

Because Amazon handles all the digital delivery and distribution, there is no printing, no physical inventory, and no upfront cost.

Amazon KDP royalty rules for 2026

Many older articles on the web share outdated information about Amazon’s payout structure.

On July 7, 2026, Amazon updated its official pricing limits. The maximum price to qualify for the premium royalty rate is now $12.99 (not $9.99 like older blogs claim).

Here is the current breakdown for ebook pricing and royalties:

How much does Amazon KDP pay?

Ebook List Price Royalty Key Conditions
$2.99–$12.99 70% Requires meeting KDP eligibility rules
Below $2.99 35% Standard rate for lower-priced books
Above $12.99 35% Standard rate for higher-priced books

Hidden cost: The 70% royalty is calculated after a $0.15-per-MB delivery fee. This is minor for text-heavy books but can add up with high-resolution images.

How much can you make with Kindle Unlimited?

Nobody can tell you exactly what one Kindle Unlimited page is worth. Amazon does not publish a fixed per-page rate.

Kindle Unlimited (KU) lets subscribers borrow books instead of buying them. Amazon does not pay a fixed amount per borrow. Instead, authors earn from the monthly KDP Select Global Fund based on their share of qualifying pages read.

  1. Amazon adds money to the monthly KDP Select Global Fund. For example, the July 2026 fund was $71 million.
  2. Your payout depends on your share of total qualifying pages read.
  3. The value of each page can change from month to month.

Because the rate changes, treat claims about a fixed “per-page rate” as rough estimates.

My KDP earnings from one ebook over 11 years

I published one ebook in May 2015. As of September 2026, Amazon has paid me $17,138.33 from it.

Here is what my own KDP history looks like tracked over 11 years:

My KDP record My results
Book Launch Date May 2015
Total earnings as of September 2026 $17,138.33
Peak Earnings Year $5,020.28 (2016)
Past 12 Months $320.14
Amazon.com Store Share 96%
Kindle Unlimited Share 29% of earnings

My best single month came during that peak year.

Here is the payment for my February 2016 sales in my KDP account: $739.69 from Amazon.com, paid by check on April 29, 2016.

Amazon KDP payment report showing $739.69 in ebook royalties for February 2016 sales, paid by check on April 29, 2016

Ten years later, the same book paid $320.14 over the past 12 months. That is a lot less, but it still pays me every month.

My own personal experience shows two things that can affect long-term KDP earnings:

  •  Refreshing content can help keep an older book relevant. I updated the book many times, including as recently as a few months ago.
  • I used Kindle Unlimited. In my records, 29% of my KDP earnings came from Kindle Unlimited.

Another thing stood out in my records: 96% of my earnings came from Amazon.com. The other twelve country stores combined added $658.41 over the same period.

Is Amazon KDP worth it?

Yes. KDP is one of the few methods in this article that I have personally used for more than a decade. My book still earns money today, but my results are specific to that book and my experience. That said, a successful book can continue generating royalties years after you publish it, but there is no guarantee of passive income or a specific earnings level.

14. Start an online store

  • Top platforms: Etsy, eBay, Amazon, Shopify, Printful, Printify
  • Pay range: The markup you set, minus fees
  • Payout speed: Etsy weekly by default; varies by platform
  • Upfront cost: $0 on Printful and Printify free plans; Etsy charges $0.20 per listing
  • Requirements: Products or original designs, and shipping supplies
  • Best for: Starting small with print on demand
  • Fact checked and verified: Etsy, Printful and Printify pricing pages, September 2026

You don’t need a fancy website or thousands of dollars in inventory to start selling physical products online.

For beginners, there are three simple ways to get started:

  • Print on Demand (POD): Create designs that a partner prints and ships after a customer orders.
  • Handmade Goods: Make physical products yourself and sell them through online marketplaces.
  • Reselling (Flipping): Buy items cheaply and resell them for a profit on platforms like eBay.

Method #1: print on demand (no inventory)

Print on Demand (POD) lets you sell t-shirts, mugs, hoodies, posters, and other products without keeping inventory at home.

You upload a design, set your price, and the POD company handles printing and shipping.

  • Printful: Free plan at $0/month with 563 customizable products and unlimited storefronts.
  • Printify: Free plan at $0/month with unlimited designs across up to five stores.

Profit catch: Your selling price isn’t your profit. A $25 shirt still requires you to subtract product costs, printing, shipping, and platform fees.

Method #2: sell handmade products on Etsy

If you know how to make something people want, you can sell handmade products through marketplaces such as Etsy.

You could sell handmade jewelry, artwork, crafts, clothing, home decor, or personalized gifts.

Etsy also allows sellers to offer original designs produced with the help of third-party production partners. That means Etsy can work for both handmade products and some print-on-demand businesses, as long as your products follow Etsy’s rules.

The tradeoff is time. With handmade products, you generally have to make, package, and ship each order yourself unless you pay someone else to handle part of the process.

Method #3: reselling (buy low, sell high)

Reselling is the next step after selling your own stuff. Instead of clearing out your closet, you buy products for less than you think you can sell them for, then list them on marketplaces such as eBay or Amazon.

I did this myself years ago with used books. I bought them at local secondhand stores like the Salvation Army, cleaned them up, and sold them on eBay. The slow part was finding out what each book was worth, because I had to type every ISBN into a site or search eBay by hand.

The main challenge is finding products people want at prices low enough to cover fees and shipping while still leaving you with a profit.

Where to set up your online shop

Platform Best For Typical Fees Payout Speed
Etsy Handmade goods and POD $0.20 listing + 6.5% transaction fee + processing Weekly by default
eBay Flipping used goods Up to 250 free listings/month; final value fees vary Weekly or daily
Amazon Reselling and high-volume goods $0.99/item or $39.99/month + category fees Every 14 days
Shopify Your own online store $39/month or $29/month annually Instant to 3 business days

How much does it cost to start selling physical products?

The fees in the table aren’t the whole cost of selling. For example, Etsy may charge a one-time shop setup fee, depending on your location.

Payout speed matters too. Etsy’s deposit schedule pays new sellers out weekly, every Monday, by default, and you can switch to daily, biweekly or monthly once your shop is set up. In the US, you need at least $25 in your balance before Etsy sends a deposit, and once a deposit is sent it takes 1 to 5 business days to reach your bank. Etsy may also hold part of a new seller’s funds in a reserve until your shop builds a track record.

There’s another potential cost if Etsy’s advertising brings you a sale. Etsy’s Offsite Ads can take 12% or 15% of an order, depending on your shop’s sales history.

That’s why it’s important to look at your profit per sale, not just your selling price.

Before listing a product, calculate what you’ll have left after the product cost, shipping, marketplace fees, and advertising.

How much can you make selling physical products?

There is no standard income for selling physical products online.

Your profit depends on your selling price, product costs, fees, shipping, advertising, and sales volume.

As one example of what is possible, Business Insider reported in March 2025 that an Etsy seller generated $175,194 in revenue and about $48,000 in profit over four months from a print-on-demand shop.

That was one seller’s experience, not a typical result. Your results could be much lower, especially when you’re starting out and still figuring out which products people want to buy.

What about dropshipping?

I don’t recommend it as a main beginner method. It can involve high advertising costs, slow shipping, customer-service problems, and heavy competition. POD, handmade products, and local reselling are simpler places to start.

Is selling physical products worth it?

Selling physical products online is worth testing if you can start small. I’d begin with products you can make or source cheaply, test demand, and only invest more after you see actual sales.

Build an Online Business

These three methods take the longest. You build an audience or steady website traffic first, and then you earn from it through ads, affiliate commissions and sponsors.

Most of them pay $0 for the first few months, and some take a year or more before the money is steady. But once one of them works, your income is no longer tied to the hours you put in.

15. Make money blogging

  • Income sources: Display ads, affiliate links, digital products, services
  • Pay range: $0 for the first few months; established sites can earn thousands or tens of thousands a month
  • Payout speed: Depends on the ad network
  • Upfront cost: Low; mainly hosting and a domain
  • Requirements: A computer, internet and patience
  • Best for: Long-term income, if you don’t need money now
  • Fact checked and verified: My own 18 years of blogging, 2008 to 2026

Blogging means building a niche blog, niche website, or content website around a specific topic, publishing useful content people search for, and making money from the traffic you attract.

You can earn from display ads, affiliate links, your own products, or a combination of them. It is how I got here.

It takes a long time to make real money with it, but if you can do it, it’s worth it.

How do bloggers make money?

Bloggers mainly make money from ads (like Google AdSense and Mediavine), affiliate marketing, and their own products or services.

Income Source How It Works How You Get Paid
Display Ads Ads appear across your articles Paid based on views and clicks
Affiliate Marketing Recommend products or services Earn commissions on qualifying sales
Your Own Products Sell ebooks, templates, or courses Keep the sales revenue minus fees
Private Services Offer consulting, coaching, or freelance work Clients pay you directly

You can combine these models. For example, a personal finance blog might earn from ads and affiliate links while also selling its own ebook.

On MoneyPantry, Google AdSense has always been my biggest source of income. I have used it for over 10 years.

The key is having useful, targeted traffic. More relevant visitors give you more opportunities to earn from ads, recommendations, products, or services.

How much can you make blogging?

A new blog can make $0 for months, while an established site with significant traffic can generate thousands of dollars a month from ads, affiliate marketing, products, or other revenue streams.

But there is no reliable average for what someone makes from their own blog because income varies so much by traffic, niche, and how the site is monetized.

Salary benchmark: Indeed’s current U.S. salary data lists an average blogger salary of $53,025 per year. This figure mainly reflects employed blogging and writing roles, not income from owning a blog business.

How I built a blogging business from a free site

I didn’t learn how to build websites from a textbook. I learned by doing it.

  • 2008: I started blogging in 2008 on a free Blogger site while I was managing an ice cream truck company. I didn’t have money for a domain or hosting, so starting for free was my way of testing whether I could actually make money with a website.
  • Early years: It took about six months to make my first few dollars. By year one, I was making a few hundred dollars a month. By year two, I was making a few thousand dollars a month. That site became BlogStash.com.
  • 2012: I used automated software to build thousands of low-quality backlinks. After Google’s Penguin update targeted manipulative link practices, my traffic collapsed.
  • 2013: I started MoneyPantry and focused on useful, original content. Over the years, MoneyPantry has generated more than $3 million in revenue.

Is blogging still worth it in 2026? (first-hand experience vs. AI)

Blogging can become a real online business, but it is one of the slowest ways to make money on this list. AI has made generic content cheaper and faster to produce, so having first-hand experience, original research, real testing, or useful opinions is more important than ever. Google also says its AI search guidance favors unique, non-commodity content and first-hand experience.

I would not start a blog if you need money right away. But if you can wait, have something genuinely useful to offer a specific audience, and are willing to stick with it, blogging can become a serious income stream. I know because I’ve done it.

16. Make money on YouTube and TikTok

  • Top platforms: YouTube, TikTok
  • Pay range: $0.02 to $25+ per 1,000 views, depending on platform, topic and video type
  • Payout speed: Monthly: YouTube after $100, TikTok after $10
  • Upfront cost: $0 with a smartphone
  • Requirements: Usually 18+ for direct platform payouts
  • Best for: People who can post for months before getting paid
  • Fact checked and verified: YouTube and TikTok help pages, September 3, 2026

You can make money creating short- or long-form videos on YouTube and TikTok.

Ad revenue is one way to get paid, but many creators make more by combining it with affiliate commissions, sponsorships, user-generated content (UGC), and digital products.

The catch is that this usually isn’t quick money.

It can take months to build an audience, and your first videos may get very few views. That’s why I think it helps to treat each video as an asset you’re building over time rather than expecting every post to make money right away.

Once you have an audience, though, you have several ways to turn those views into income.

How to make money on YouTube

To earn advertising revenue directly from YouTube, you need to join the YouTube Partner Program (YPP).

YouTube has two main eligibility tiers:

YPP Tier Requirements What you get
Tier 1: Fan Funding 500 subscribers + 3 public uploads in 90 days + 3,000 watch hours or 3M Shorts views Super Chats, Super Thanks, memberships, and Shopping
Tier 2: Ad Revenue 1,000 subscribers + 4,000 watch hours or 10M Shorts views Watch Page and Shorts Feed ad revenue

Remember: Shorts Feed watch hours don’t count toward YouTube’s 4,000 public watch-hour requirement. So a channel can rack up plenty of Shorts views without getting closer to that particular eligibility threshold.

How much can you make on YouTube?

Your earnings depend on how viewers watch your content and how they support you.

Revenue source Creator share Typical RPM
Long-form videos 55% of net Watch Page ad revenue $1.65–$25.00+
YouTube Shorts 45% of allocated Shorts Creator Pool revenue $0.02–$0.12
Fan support & shopping 70% of net revenue Varies

There’s also a delay between earning money and getting paid. Google requires $100 in AdSense earnings before issuing a payment. Your previous month’s earnings are finalized around the 3rd, and payments are generally issued between the 21st and 26th once you’ve reached the threshold and have no payment holds.

The big takeaway is that long-form videos can earn much more per 1,000 views than Shorts, although RPM varies widely by niche. Finance and technology, for example, often have higher advertising rates than lifestyle or gaming.

That doesn’t make Shorts a bad option. They can help you reach new viewers, but you’ll generally need far more views to generate the same ad revenue.

And YouTube gives you other ways to earn beyond ads.

YouTube Shopping and affiliate links

If your videos naturally involve products, you can also earn when viewers buy them. Eligible creators can tag products from participating brands in long-form videos and Shorts through YouTube Shopping.

The commission is set by the retailer, and Google says commissions are paid through AdSense 60 to 120 days after the purchase to allow time for customer returns.

That gives you another income stream without relying entirely on YouTube advertising.

How to make money on TikTok

TikTok can put your videos in front of a large audience quickly, but its direct per-view payouts are generally lower than long-form YouTube.

That makes other ways to make money on TikTok, such as TikTok Shop, affiliate commissions, and brand deals, more important.

TikTok monetization options
Option Requirements Earnings
Creator Rewards 10,000+ followers
100,000 views in 30 days
$0.40–$1.00 RPM
TikTok Shop 1,000+ followers 10%–20% commissions
Up to 30%+
TikTok Series Eligible creators $0.99–$189.99 per collection

Creator Rewards requires original videos longer than one minute. The minimum payout is $10, and eligible earnings are paid monthly.

TikTok Shop lets eligible creators promote products from its marketplace, while Series lets eligible creators charge viewers for collections of premium content. You can check TikTok Shop’s eligibility guidelines for the current criteria.

TikTok also offers other ways to earn, including LIVE Gifting, Video Gifts, and brand connections through TikTok One.

Get paid without an audience with UGC

You can also make money from video without waiting to build an audience or qualify for a platform’s monetization program.

Brands hire creators to make User-Generated Content (UGC) they can use in their own social posts or paid ads. Common projects include product unboxings, testimonials, problem-solution hooks, and short tutorial demonstrations.

So UGC works differently from YouTube or TikTok. You aren’t getting paid for your audience or the views your video gets. You’re getting paid to create the video itself.

Rates vary widely, but here’s a general idea of what creators may charge as they gain experience:

Creator level Typical pay per asset What you’re paid for
Beginner $50–$150 Creating the UGC asset
Experienced $300–$500+ Content creation and licensing rights

Before accepting a project, get the terms in writing. Make sure you know what you’re creating, how many revisions are included, how the brand can use the video, and when you’ll be paid. A brand might, for example, pay for 30 days of ad usage rather than permanent rights.

If you post a paid endorsement on your own social channels, you also need to follow the FTC’s disclosure rules and clearly disclose your relationship with the brand.

Is making money with videos worth it?

If you’re starting from zero, I’d look at UGC first if you want to get paid for making videos without waiting to build an audience. If you enjoy creating content and can stick with it, YouTube gives you more ways to turn an audience into income over time.

17. Make money with affiliate marketing

  • Top platforms: Amazon Associates, ClickBank, Awin, CJ Affiliate
  • Pay range: $0 to $10,000+ a month, depending on traffic and products
  • Payout speed: Amazon: about 60 days after the month ends
  • Upfront cost: $0
  • Requirements: A website, YouTube channel, email list or social media audience
  • Best for: People who already have an audience
  • Fact checked and verified: Official program pages, September 2026

Affiliate marketing lets you make money online by recommending products or services.

You share a special affiliate link, and you earn a commission when someone buys through it or completes another qualifying action.

You don’t need to create products, keep inventory, or handle customer orders.

You need an audience and a good reason for that audience to trust your recommendation.

So if you already have a website, YouTube channel, email list, or social media following, affiliate marketing can be a good way to turn that audience into income.

If you’re starting with zero audience, though, you’ll need to build one first. That makes affiliate marketing a way to build online income, not a quick way to make money.

How to make money with affiliate marketing

You make money by recommending products or services your audience wants.

  1. Choose a topic you know and an audience you can reach.
  2. Find relevant affiliate products that pay a commission.
  3. Create useful content such as reviews, comparisons, tutorials, or “best” lists.
  4. Get people to your content through Google, YouTube, social media, email, or other channels.

For example, someone searching for the best laptop for college is already considering a purchase. If your content helps them choose and they buy through your affiliate link, you earn a commission.

Which affiliate programs should beginners join?

There are thousands of affiliate programs, so you don’t have to stick with these.

Here are a few large, beginner-friendly options to show you what’s available:

Affiliate network Best for What you can promote
Amazon Associates Physical products Millions of Amazon products
ClickBank Digital products Courses, software, ebooks and more
Awin Brand-name products and services Retailers, software, services
CJ Affiliate Established brands Retail, software, services

Amazon Associates

Amazon Associates is free to join if you have a qualifying website or social media presence. It pays slowly, though. Amazon’s commission payment terms send your money about 60 days after the end of the month you earned it in, and direct deposit needs a $10 balance.

  • How you make money: Earn a commission when someone buys a qualifying product through your affiliate link.
  • Watch out: You have 180 days to refer three qualifying sales. If you don’t, Amazon closes your application.

ClickBank

A good option if you want to promote digital products. ClickBank has courses, software, ebooks, and other digital offers, many with higher commission rates than typical physical products.

  • Payment requirement:  You need five qualifying sales from different customers using at least two payment methods.
  • Payment threshold: $100 by default, although you can change it.

Awin and CJ Affiliate

Awin and CJ Affiliate are large networks that connect publishers with individual brands.

  • Best for: Finding programs in specific niches, including software, retail, travel, and services.
  • Good to know: Awin acquired ShareASale. If you see an older article recommending ShareASale, look for those programs through Awin instead.

How much can you make with affiliate marketing?

A realistic range is about $0 to $2,500 a month for many affiliate marketers, while established affiliates can make $2,500 to $10,000+ a month.

Your actual income depends on your traffic, niche, products, commission rates, and how well your content turns readers into buyers.

Here’s what one 2026 survey of over 500 affiliate marketers found:

  • 41% earned less than $1,000 a month.
  • The reported median income was $1,200 to $2,500 a month.
  • The reported average was $8,038 a month.

The $8,038 average can be misleading because high earners can pull the average up. The median gives you a better idea of where the middle of the surveyed group falls, while the 41% earning under $1,000 shows that many affiliates make much less.

The industry itself is also large and growing. Cognitive Market Research estimates the global affiliate marketing market was worth $18.45 billion in 2025 and projects it to reach $35.43 billion by 2033.

How affiliate commissions turn into income

Your income ultimately comes down to how much you earn from each sale and how many sales you generate:

Product price Commission You earn per sale
$20 5% $1
$100 10% $10
$500 20% $100

For example, to make $1,000, you would need 1,000 sales at $1 commission, 100 sales at $10, or just 10 sales at $100.

That’s why two affiliates with the same amount of traffic can make very different amounts. The products they promote and the commissions they earn matter just as much as the number of people they reach.

My experience with affiliate income

I’ve earned affiliate income from MoneyPantry for years, so this is one method I can speak about from personal experience.

The networks I’ve used most are Panthera, MaxBounty and CJ. I’ve also used ShareASale (now part of Awin), Impact and a few others.

My results should not be treated as a typical income or a promise of what you can make. MoneyPantry has an established audience and years of content behind it, so someone starting a new website today would need time to build similar traffic.

I’ve also earned money through CPA programs, which work in a similar way but pay you for a specific action instead of requiring a purchase.

Panthera and MaxBounty are both CPA networks, and Panthera has been my biggest earner by far. From 2016 to 2019, when MoneyPantry’s traffic was at its highest, I was making over $10,000 a month from Panthera alone, plus a few thousand dollars more from the other networks combined.

Is affiliate marketing worth it?

Affiliate marketing can become a real source of income, but it is not a quick way to make money. You need an audience, useful content, and products that fit what your readers want. If you already have a website or audience, it is one of the easiest ways to add another income stream without creating or shipping products yourself.

  • Top platforms: Opinion Outpost, 1Q, SurveySavvy, Pinecone Research
  • Pay range: $1 to $5 per survey; $100+ for rare product tests
  • Upfront cost: $0; never pay to join a survey site
  • Best for: Pocket change and quick PayPal cash
  • Fact checked and verified: Panel pages and company terms, September 2026

Taking online surveys is one of the easiest ways to make your very first dollar online.

But let’s be completely honest: surveys have some of the lowest hourly pay rates of any method in this entire guide.

In my experience, once you factor in the time you waste getting disqualified or “screened out” of questionnaires, ordinary surveys usually work out to just $2 to $5 an hour.

That said, since taking surveys is still a legit way to make a bit of extra cash, I am going to give you a short list of my favorites, some of which I have been using for over 10 years.

Which online survey sites are actually worth it?

If you want to try online surveys, stick to long-running, legitimate panels. Here is a scannable look at how the top verified networks stack up today:

Survey Platform Best For Payout Method Key Terms & Cash-Out Limits
Opinion Outpost Regular studies & diary entries PayPal / Gift Cards Long-running site that offers standard surveys and product tests.
1Q Instant mobile micro-tasks PayPal Pays up to $0.25 per question, sent instantly to PayPal. Users report there are no screeners.
SurveySavvy Low cash-out limits Mailed Check You can cash out at just $1. The catch: Mailed checks take 4 to 12 weeks to arrive.
Pinecone Research At-home product testing PayPal / Check Exclusive panel focusing on physical product tests and follow-up surveys.
QuickRewards Multi-task rewards PayPal / Gift Cards Long-running platform offering shopping cashback alongside daily surveys.
Nielsen Panels Passive media tracking Gift Cards / Prizes Consumer tracking group. Entry is based entirely on random invitations.

My note on PaidViewpoint: PaidViewpoint is well liked, but it publishes neither its pay rate nor its cashout threshold on its site. That does not automatically make it a bad option, but I am less comfortable recommending a survey company when it does not clearly publish basic information about earnings and cashout.

How I made over $20,000 with online surveys

When I came to the U.S. in 2002, my bank account was at zero. I was working two full-time jobs just to get by, so making money online was never a hobby for me. I needed it.

I was one of those people who started this whole making money online thing with surveys.

I even fell for one of those sites where you’d pay $35 for basically a list of paid survey sites.

Around 2005, I kept reading about people earning extra cash online, so I tried survey sites myself. Over roughly 15 years of taking surveys and participating in related research opportunities, I earned more than $20,000.

That was not $20,000 from one survey site, and surveys never provided me with a full-time income. I used many different sites over the years and treated them as a way to make extra money.

SurveySavvy is one of the sites I have used the longest. I have been a member since around 2007. It also pays you when people you referred complete surveys, and today most of what I earn there comes from referrals.

Here is one of my SurveySavvy balances, with $1,282.00 in earned rewards ready to cash out:

SurveySavvy account showing $1,282.00 in earned rewards from surveys and referrals, available to cash out

For ordinary surveys, I typically earned around $1 to $5 per survey. Some surveys paid $100 or more, but those were usually product-testing surveys or other higher-value research opportunities rather than basic questionnaires.

For example, Global Test Market (now known as LifePoints) or SurveySpot (now Branded Surveys) would sometimes send me products such as shampoo or snacks to use before I completed a follow-up survey about my experience. Those opportunities could pay much more because I was testing an actual product and providing detailed feedback.

Which surveys pay the most?

If you want to make more than a few dollars from surveys, I would not spend hours grinding through $1 or $2 questionnaires. Instead, look for product-testing surveys, focus groups, and larger market research studies. They are harder to qualify for, but they pay the highest reward tiers because brands need hyper-specific demographic data.

Is taking surveys for money worth it?

Yes, as a first step.

Surveys were my first taste of online income. Making extra PayPal cash and scoring free gift cards proved to me that earning money online was real. That small spark gave me the confidence to start my very first blog, learn web design, learn affiliate marketing, and eventually build MoneyPantry into a multimillion-dollar business.

So I am not against surveys. I just want you to see them for what they are: a legitimate way to make some extra money online, but a poor choice if your goal is serious income.

What About Earning Cashback?

Cashback sites are another easy way to make money online, but they work differently from surveys. With surveys, you trade your time for money.

With cashback, you get money back from spending you were already going to do.

There are a few legit cashback apps and sites that I personally use when I shop online, including:

  • Rakuten: The cashback app I use the most. The catch: It pays out very slowly on a quarterly schedule (every three months) via PayPal or a mailed “Big Fat Check”. You must accumulate at least $5.01 in confirmed savings to trigger a quarterly payout.
  • TopCashback & RetailMeNot: Two more large cashback sites that pay you back on purchases at thousands of online stores.

How I earned over $7,000 with Rakuten

I have personally used shopping cashback extensions for years to keep my household budget lean.

While I split my activity across platforms like QuickRewards, TopCashback and others, I use Rakuten the most.

Since 2024, I have made more than $7,000 with Rakuten. Part of that came from cash back on my own shopping, and part came from referral bonuses when people joined Rakuten through my link.

My biggest single payment was a Big Fat Check for $6,624.00, dated November 16, 2025.

Rakuten Big Fat Check for $6,624.00 from cash back and referral bonuses, mailed to Saeed Darabi of MoneyPantry

Keep in mind that referral bonuses helped make my checks that big. If you only earn from your own shopping, expect much smaller payments.

I would not count cashback as a serious income source, but it can be an easy way to save money on purchases you were already planning to make.

The important part is not buying something just because it offers cashback. Otherwise, you can easily spend more than you save.

What It Takes to Earn $100, $500, or a Full-Time Income Online

How much you want to make online changes the strategy you should use.

Making your first $100 online is very different from making $500 a month, and replacing a full-time paycheck requires an entirely different approach.

The biggest mistake beginners make is choosing a method designed for small amounts of extra cash and expecting it to eventually pay like a full-time job. Start with your income goal, then choose a method that can realistically get you there.

Almost every online income method requires at least one of four things before you can make meaningful money:

What You Need Best Methods Typical Timeline
An audience YouTube, blogging, affiliate marketing Months to years
A marketable skill Freelancing, tutoring, virtual assistant work Days to weeks
Something to sell Sell used items, reselling, print-on-demand Today to a few weeks
Platform approval Prolific, AI training, focus groups Days to months

Of these four, selling things you already own is the only one you can start today without building an audience, developing a new skill, or waiting for someone to approve you. That makes it one of the fastest ways to make your first $100 online.

Goal #1: how to make your first $100 online this week

Best approach: Sell things you already own while applying for online opportunities that could become repeatable income.

What to do Where to start Goal
Sell unwanted items Vinted, Facebook Marketplace, eBay Make your first $100
Apply for paid studies Prolific and research panels Find repeatable work
Apply for AI training work Legitimate AI training platforms Find higher-paying work

Your first-week plan:

  1. Day 1: Find 10–15 things you no longer use. Focus on electronics, branded clothing, shoes, tools, games, and other items with resale value.
  2. Day 1: List the best 6–7 items for sale.
  3. Day 1: Apply to Prolific, one AI training platform, and two research panels.
  4. Days 2–7: Add more listings, respond quickly to buyers, and complete any paid studies or training work you qualify for.

How many items does $100 take? The UK seller I mentioned earlier averaged roughly £17 (about $22) per item. At that rate, five decent items could get you to $100. That is why the plan above starts with your best 6 to 7 items.

The catch: Selling your own belongings is fast, but it isn’t a permanent income source. Once you’ve emptied your closet and garage, you’ll need another method to keep earning.

Goal #2: how to make $500 a month online

Best approach: Stop looking for one magical side hustle. Build a small stack of income sources that each contribute part of the $500.

Income Source Role Why Use It
AI training Best-paying piece High hourly pay, but the work comes in bursts
Paid research Supplemental income Useful when studies are available
Playtesting and other tasks Fill income gaps Provides additional opportunities

You don’t have to use those exact methods. The important part is to spread the $500 target across several sources instead of expecting one website to pay you $500 every month.

Here is one real example. In the r/beermoney “Who paid you for/in December 2025?” thread, one user said it was their first full month and listed $533 from four sites: dscout ($300), User Interviews ($175), UserTesting ($42) and Branded Surveys ($16). No single site paid the whole amount.

Another user in the same thread showed how much this can change from month to month. In 2025, their monthly totals went from about $90 to $1,018. That is one person’s results, and yours will be different.

Your $500-a-month plan:

  1. Apply to several platforms instead of waiting on one application.
  2. Track how much each platform actually pays you per hour.
  3. Keep the sources that consistently have worthwhile work.
  4. Drop platforms that waste your time with low pay, screen-outs, or little available work.
  5. Build toward a reliable monthly mix rather than chasing the highest advertised payout.

Realistic timeline: Give yourself roughly 2–3 months to test platforms, get accepted, and figure out which combination can reliably produce $500 a month. You may earn money sooner, but consistency usually takes longer.

Goal #3: how to replace a full-time income online

Best approach: Move beyond small-task platforms. To replace a paycheck, you generally need either a marketable skill you can sell at a higher rate or a business that can grow beyond the hours you work.

Path How You Get Paid What to Expect
Remote job Salary or hourly pay More predictable income
Freelancing Clients pay for your skill Income can grow with your rates and client base
Online business Products, ads, affiliates, or services Slower to build but can scale beyond your hours

One important distinction: An online job is not the same thing as an online business.

For example, virtual assistant work can become a full-time income when you have enough paid hours. An agency such as Boldly has advertised W-2 virtual assistant positions paying around $27 to $30 an hour. At 40 hours a week, that can provide a genuine full-time paycheck, but you are still trading your time for money and working a set schedule.

Building a business works differently. A blog, YouTube channel, e-commerce store, or affiliate site can eventually generate income from an audience or assets you’ve built rather than from every hour you work.

But don’t expect that to happen quickly. My own blogging journey took six months to make my first few dollars and about two full years to reach a few thousand dollars a month while I was working full-time in the background.

In fact, I was still working my day job for years after MoneyPantry started making serious money. Even when the site was earning more than $10,000 a month, I didn’t immediately quit my job. Building enough reliable online income to replace a paycheck takes time and you have to make sure it’s reliable before you quit your day job.

Start with the goal you can actually reach

Making $100 a day sounds simple, but it’s really a full-time income goal. That’s a very different challenge from making your first $100 online.

If you’re starting from zero, don’t try to jump straight to a full-time income.

Get to your first $100. Then work toward $500 a month. Once you can consistently make $500 online, you have real data about which methods, skills, and platforms are worth scaling.

What I Would Skip, and Why

There is another part of my research that didn’t make the list. These are popular methods I left out because they have shut down, are outdated, harder than they look, or come with a catch.

Amazon Mechanical Turk shut down on September 30, 2026

MTurk was on nearly every make-money-online list for years, but Amazon shut it down. Amazon’s worker page says it closed permanently on September 30, 2026. If you relied on it, some MTurk alternatives still pay for similar small tasks.

If you had an account, check your Account Settings and make sure your payment method and transfer schedule are set. Amazon’s help page says task submissions ended September 30, bonuses can be awarded until October 30, and transaction history stays available until January 28, 2027.

The claim Status When it ended Where I checked
Do microtasks on Amazon Mechanical Turk Shut down September 30, 2026 Amazon
Get paid to watch videos on Swagbucks Ended June 1, 2022 Swagbucks
Watch InboxDollars TV Ended March 31, 2020 InboxDollars

Platforms I would approach carefully

  • Luel.ai: A worker reported a 73% pay cut applied to work already completed, in an April 2026 r/beermoney thread.
  • Welo Data: A worker on r/WorkOnline reported spending significant time on assessments and multiple jobs without ultimately earning anything.
  • Micro1: A 2026 discussion raised concerns about its AI interview being used to train its own models. Read the terms before agreeing to an interview.
  • TELUS Digital: A worker on r/WorkOnline reported that the pay rate was not disclosed until after passing the qualification exam.

These are worker reports, not proof that every person will have the same experience. But they are enough to make me ask one question before spending hours on unpaid tests or assessments: What happens after I pass, and how much does the work actually pay?

Things that pay, but have a catch

  • Atlas Earth: Its own disclaimer says virtual “rent” is not guaranteed and the amount returned to players can be changed at any time without notice. You also need $5 accrued before you can redeem it.
  • JustAnswer: Its expert recruitment page promises “lucrative monthly payments,” but does not publish a simple hourly, per-question, or monthly rate. That makes it hard to judge the opportunity before signing up.
  • Phone farming: It often relies on running multiple accounts or devices in ways that can violate app terms. The money may be real, but so is the risk of having accounts closed.

The scam rule worth memorizing

The FTC calls one common pattern “paying to get paid.” You complete simple tasks, watch a balance grow, and then get told to deposit your own money, often in crypto, to unlock more tasks or withdraw your supposed earnings.

The FTC reported around 5,000 task scam reports in all of 2023, compared with roughly 20,000 in the first half of 2024. Losses from all job scams reached $223 million in that same six-month period.

The rule is simple: A real opportunity may require normal expenses such as equipment or a background check. But if you’re told to pay money to unlock tasks or withdraw money you’ve supposedly earned, walk away.

Some “I made $X” posts are advertisements

While researching this article, I found a survey earnings post in a side-hustle subreddit with more than 200 upvotes that claimed to show pure personal earnings with no referrals. But the highest-earning sites were linked through the author’s referral links, along with a link tree containing more of them.

I’m not naming the person because the pattern matters more than the individual. When you see an “I made $X” earnings report, check the links. A genuine personal report and a sales funnel can look very similar from the outside.

Side Hustle Taxes: The New Rules

If you earn money from side hustles, you may notice some changes to the tax forms you receive. The federal reporting thresholds have changed, but that does not mean your side hustle income is no longer taxable.

The IRS Gig Economy Tax Center says income from gig work and side hustles is taxable even if you don’t receive a tax form.

New 2026 tax reporting thresholds

Form Reporting threshold Who sends it?
1099-K More than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions Payment apps such as PayPal, Venmo, and Cash App
1099-NEC $2,000 Platforms or clients that pay you directly
Schedule SE $400 in net self-employment earnings You

The previous $600 federal 1099-K threshold was repealed, while the 1099-NEC threshold increased from $600 to $2,000 and will be adjusted for inflation in future years. The IRS explains the 1099-K changes here.

The important part: These thresholds determine when a form may be sent to you. They do not determine whether your income is taxable.

A simple way to track your side hustle income

Open a separate checking account and send your side hustle payouts there. Keeping this money separate from your regular spending makes it much easier to track your income, expenses, and profits when tax time comes around.

How side hustle income affects benefits like SNAP and SSI

Tax reporting thresholds are not the same as income limits for government assistance programs.

  • SNAP, SSI, Medicaid, and housing assistance: Side hustle income may count toward eligibility or benefit limits.
  • State rules: Each program can have its own income and reporting requirements, which may be much lower than the IRS thresholds.

If you receive government benefits and your income is about to increase significantly, check with your caseworker about how the extra income could affect your benefits.

International workers: tax & platform rules outside the US

If you live outside the United States, your local tax laws apply.

Several platforms in this post, including Outlier, Prolific, Askable and User Interviews, accept people outside the US. Availability can vary by country, so check each platform’s current eligibility requirements before signing up.

Disclaimer: This is general information, not tax advice. Check with a qualified tax professional about your specific situation.

How I Researched This Post

I researched the payout rules and requirements directly from each company’s own website, help center, terms, payment pages, or official announcements. I checked these sources in September 2026.

For tax information and scam data, I used the IRS Gig Economy Tax Center and the Federal Trade Commission.

How I calculate real pay

The real pay figures use MoneyPantry’s Side Hustle Real Wage Index, last checked in September 2026. Instead of counting only the time spent completing paid work, I also account for unpaid time such as failed screeners, applications, and rejected tests.

Real hourly pay = total earnings ÷ total time invested

This produces a more useful picture of what you actually earn for your time. Across the 15 side hustles measured, real pay came out about a third lower than advertised pay.

When I can’t calculate a real hourly rate from reliable data, I use reports from people sharing their own earnings instead, and I say where each one came from. Treat those figures as one person’s results, not guaranteed earnings.

Some figures come from my own records rather than company data: my Kindle book, my blogging, my affiliate income and my cashback. Those are examples of what happened to me, not a guarantee of what you can earn.

Sources and figures can change, so I recommend checking the linked company or government source before making a financial or tax decision.

Common Questions About Making Money Online

Is it actually possible to make money online for free?

Yes. You can make money online for free if you pick methods where the platform pays you, not the other way around. Selling things you already own, paid research on Prolific, game playtesting on PlaytestCloud and diary studies on dscout all cost nothing to join. I’d skip any site that asks you to pay before you can start earning.

How can I make money online as a complete beginner?

The easiest way for a complete beginner to make money online is to sell things you no longer use on Vinted, eBay or Facebook Marketplace. On the same day, apply to Prolific and a couple of research panels. None of these need work experience. Selling gets you your first $100, and the studies can grow into income you can repeat.

How can I make money online with no money?

If you have no money to start, stick to methods that pay you for your time or your stuff. Good examples are selling items you own, paid research studies, playtesting and AI training work. An online store can have startup costs, and a blog takes months before it pays, so save those for later.

How can I make money online fast?

The fastest way to make money online is to sell things you already own. With Vinted, the sale completes two days after delivery (sooner if the buyer confirms it), and your money arrives within two more days. Beyond selling, PlaytestCloud pays within three days of a good test, and Prolific sends PayPal payments within 24 hours of cashout once you reach its $6 minimum. 1Q pays each answered question straight to your PayPal.

Can I really make $100 a day online?

You can, but it’s rare for a beginner. $100 a day is about $3,000 a month. Most people who reach it have a full-time remote job or run a business, not an app. For example, Boldly has advertised virtual assistant jobs paying $27 to $30 an hour. Aim for your first $100, then $500 a month.

How much money can I realistically make online?

Most beginner methods realistically pay about $5 to $30 an hour once you count unpaid time like screeners and applications. In a r/beermoney thread, one person made $533 in their first full month from four sites. That’s one person’s result, not a typical one. Plan on two to three months before $500 a month is steady.

What are the most legitimate ways to make money online?

The most legitimate ways to make money online are platforms that publish their pay rules. Prolific requires researchers to pay at least $8 an hour. Outlier pays every Tuesday. Upwork, Etsy and Amazon KDP all post their fees and payout schedules. Selling your own things, freelancing and remote jobs like virtual assistant work are also safe bets.

The Bottom Line

Don’t try all 17 ways to make money online. Pick one way to earn sooner and one way to build something longer term.

Start by applying to Prolific, one AI training platform and two research panels. Some platforms have waitlists or approval processes, so applying early gives you more options later.

Then find six things in your house you do not use and list them for sale. Selling stuff you already own is one of the simplest ways to turn things you no longer need into cash.

The rest of the methods on this list can take longer to get going. That’s normal. The goal isn’t to find one magical way to make money online. It’s to start with something that can pay you now while building something that could pay you more consistently over time.

In addition to online jobs to make money….years ago I attended a community college and with a B average made $1,200 a year.
Later I applied my education to tutoring college students.
I also cleaned houses. For pre-teens and teens I suggest dog walking, and also put flyers up around apt. complexes to care for children to free up moms to other things; such as, clean their homes, watch TV or go shopping for a few hours. I organized both homes and businesses and this pays quite well, like $100 per organized place.
Resume and cover letter and interview answers to such questions is another money maker.
Your list is an excellent list that contained a vast variety of money making options….thank you for the resource connections…great job.

I can absolutely relate to your story. I did a lot of those same stuff to make extra cash.

I love that people can earn money beyond the usual online gigs, from tutoring to house cleaning and even organizing.

Those kinds of side hustles really do add up, and they’re perfect for folks who want flexible options.

I’m glad you found the list helpful, and appreciate you adding your perspective to the conversation.

    Great list!

I’ve been wondering, based on your personal experience and expertise, what are the easiest ways to make money online without any prior experience? Also, how long does it usually take to start earning a steady income? Thanks for sharing these helpful ideas!

    1. Saeed
      Saeed

      Hey Keith,

Those are really common questions, and for good reason.

If I were a beginner and had to start all over again (we’re assuming I have no experience or expertise) I would go with online surveys, testing websites, or receipt apps.

Those require no experience. You don’t to invest any money and you can start right away.

Just keep in mind that building a steady income usually takes some time and consistent effort. But with patience, those small steps add up.

If you want tips on where to begin based on your skills or schedule, just ask!

      Best of luck to you!

    1. Saeed
      Saeed

      Hey Rich,

I get it, starting something new online can feel kinda overwhelming.

How fast you make money really depends on the method and how much time you put in.

Stuff like surveys or testing websites can pay pretty quick, but it’s usually just small amounts.

Things like freelance gigs or selling products take longer to get going but can bring in steady cash over time.

The best thing you can do is pick one or two and stick with it or a while. If you start seeing results, keep going. Once you get comfortable with them and streamline your process, you can add other options as well. good luck!

Yo, I love how you laid out the process for making money online. It’s so true that getting that first payout can really pump you up and keep you motivated. I remember when I first started, I hit $10 on Swagbucks and it felt like a huge win!

    1. Saeed Darabi

Thanks, John. That first payout really does change how you look at making money online. Even a small win like the first $10 from Swagbucks makes it feel real and gives you the motivation to keep going. A lot of people quit too early before they ever hit that point.
