Gas prices are always at the forefront of our conversations especially when it comes to how much things cost and the ever-rising cost of goods.
No matter how much you try to cut down your spending, there are certain expenses that you can’t really do much about.
One of those things is gas prices!
If you drive, then you’ve got to use gas – there’s no way around it.
Sure, there are things you can to do to save on gas, but with high fuel prices, it can still put a pretty big dent in your budget.

And for many families, that can create a serious financial problem.
But, did you know that there are actually many legitimate ways that you can get free gas?
And no, we’re not talking about any kind of illegal activities like the famous “Gas Pump Trick” where there is supposedly a code for getting free gas (more on that later).
There are a few totally legitimate and legal ways anyone (well, almost anyone) can get free fuel.
And no there is no hack or trickery involved.
Here are some of the best places to find free gasoline:
1. Visit FreeGasHelp.com
- Official site: http://freegashelp.com/
If you’re willing to turn your car into an advertising platform, then check out FreeGasHelp.com.
This company will pay for your gas, and all you have to do in return is place advertising on your car.
It’s sort of like the Car Wrapping thing where you get paid to advertise on your car.
In order to be eligible for the site’s program, you must drive at least 1,000 miles per month.
If you are enrolled in the program, you’ll get to choose which types of advertising you want to place on your vehicle. You can choose from a variety of advertising options, from door magnets to complete vehicle ad coverage.
In exchange for displaying advertisements, you’ll receive a fuel card each month that’s worth between $5 and $200.
Be aware that the company carries out unscheduled spot checks and verification on your vehicle. And, if you aren’t complying with its agreement, then you’ll be removed from the program and be charged $50.
Currently, this program only operates in certain areas of California, Texas, Illinois, Wisconsin, New Jersey and New York.
Check out the site to see exact locations, and to see if the program has become available in your area.
Join Opinion Outpost. It is a fun panel with a lot of interesting surveys. And it rewards you well!
2. Check out Free Gas USA, Inc.
- Official site:
- Application form:
Update: No longer available.
If you meet its criteria, you might be able to get free gas from Free Gas USA, INC.
It provides grants for fuel, which range from $50 to $1200 dollars.
To get a grant, you must fill out an application online (link above.)
Please note that you only need to fill out an application once – if you do it more than once, you will not be approved.
Similarly, once you submit your application, don’t phone to check if they received it – or again, your application will be eliminated.
It’s important to note that you will only qualify for a grant from Free Gas USA if you and your family meet the income limits that are established by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Also, even if you think that you meet the criteria for a grant – you still might not be approved. That’s because, while you might think that your income is low, there might be people out there that earn less than you or have to support a larger family.
Your application will be assessed based on your income and personal circumstances, as well as the availability of funding.
All applications must be accompanied by a referral letter from an official organization or agency, like a Social Service Agency or a church.
If your application is approved, then you’ll be issued a coded fuel card.
3. Contact The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army offers help for basic needs which includes free gas vouchers to those in need.
So, check in with your local center, and see if they offer this type of assistance.
It’s important to keep in mind that these vouchers are limited. The Salvation Army does not have a great deal of funding, and as gas prices are high, it’s hard for the organization to hand out many free gas vouchers.
You are more likely to receive a gas voucher if you need fuel to get to school, medical appointment, or a job interview or training program.
Phone your local Salvation Army center and ask about assistance will fuel costs and transportation.
4. Ask your local church
If you need gas quickly, and you can’t wait days or weeks to be accepted into a free gas card program, then try talking to someone at your local church.
Churches want to help people in their community, so all you need to do is ask. While it’s not something that you can do all the time, if you’re really struggling, it’s a good option.
Most churches will usually help you out a certain amount of times each month or year. So, it can be worth contacting a few different churches in your area.
Most churches will give you a free gift card for gas stations, or write you a check that’s payable to a specific gas station – they don’t generally give out cash.
You can either call your local church or alternatively, visit 211.org for assistance.
5. Look for gas card product offers
You can often find gas card promotions from certain retailers and companies.
For example, if you purchase $30 of eligible products, then you’ll get a free $10 gas card. So, if you’re buying stuff from CVS anyway, it’s a great way to save some money on fuel.
Many other companies also offer similar deals, so always be on the lookout.
Other options for free fuel
There are also other options for getting free gas. Although, you will be trading your time for free gas cards.
Here are a few options:
6. Use Swagbucks
A very popular website called Swagbucks rewards you with points for doing simple stuff, like browsing the internet, completing surveys, shopping and watching videos.
You can then redeem these points for cash and gift cards, including gas cards.
It’s an easy to use website, which gives you rewards for things that you’re already probably doing.
7. Participate in Surveys & Contests
If you’re willing to give your opinion about various topics, then check out these survey sites where you can earn rewards for answering online surveys.
Often, these companies will pay you in points that you can exchange for cash, gift cards, and of course, gas cards.
You can also try your luck with free sweepstakes and contests where you have the chance to win money and gift cards that can be used for gas.
About the “Free Gas Pump Code/Trick”
If you’ve ever searched about getting free gas, I’m sure you’ve come across sites talking about a “secret code” or a “trick” that can get you free gas at the pump.
There is some truth that, at least when it comes to the story, not the effectiveness of the “trick”.
The story goes that, during the Nixon Administration, to help FBI agents keep their covers while keeping an eye on mafioso, they were given a secret code that they could use to get free gas at certain pumps in gas stations located in mafia hot spots.
And so according to this story a few of those “special” pumps are still in operation in gas stations around the country, and if you know the code/trick, you can get free gas from those same pumps.
The problem with this story is that…
Well, it’s just that, a story!
Nobody is able to find any hard evidence that such a program even existed in the first place.
Secondly, even if it were true, it was intended for FBI agents, not for any driver. So using the code when you’re not an agent is basically stealing.
And stealing is wrong!
Anyway, I just wanted to touch on that since I have seen a lot of people asking about it on social media and forums.
As gas prices rise, many people find themselves struggling to keep their tank full.
But, by taking advantage of any available options like Swagbucks and FreeGasHelp.com and asking for help from places like the Salvation Army when you really need it, you can cut down on fuel costs and perhaps get some of that gas for free.
