Next to our household bills, mortgage/rent, and the cost of owning a car, one of our biggest and most frequent expenses is groceries.
We all know how pricey a quick trip to the grocery store can be.
Even a small cart can rack up a surprisingly high purchase total at the checkout.
Grocery, and food prices in general, seem to increase every year. According to a report from the Economic Research Service of USDA, grocery store food prices are already higher than a year ago.
Fortunately, you can earn a little something back from the cash you spend at your local store with loyalty programs.
Grocery rewards programs are offered by tons of stores, both regional and national.

Classic Grocery Store Rewards Programs
We’re going to start out with your classic loyalty programs.
With your classic programs, you’ll earn one or more of the following when you purchase stuff:
- Points that can be redeemed for free stuff – usually either grocery items or money off fuel.
- Free stuff when you spend a certain amount at a store.
These programs are great because they reward you each time you shop.
1. Target Circle Card (Formerly known as Target REDcard)
The Target Circle Card (read my review here) is a loyalty card, which also functions as a credit or debit card.
With this card, you save 5% every time you shop in-store at Target or online at Target.com.
But, that’s not all…
You also get free shipping on most items – this is good because shipping fees are a real downside to online shopping that really bumps up the cost.
And, you get access to longer returns period too.

This is a store loyalty card that gives you access to tons of benefits including discount son gas that makes it easy to save a ton on gas.
For every 100 points you earn, you’ll get 10¢ off per gallon up to a maximum of 25 gallons of fuel per vehicle per purchase (which by the way is much better than what some of the gas station rewards programs offer) – the exception to this is the Hagerstown and Waynesboro, MD stores, which might have a different limit. This is indicated on the store receipt.
Points you earn expire at the end of the next month.
What’s great about this program is that there isn’t a limit on how many Gas Extra Rewards you can receive.
And, you get the option to redeem your points as you receive them, or allow them to add up for more savings – so it’s a pretty flexible program.
The total discount you receive, however, cannot exceed the price per gallon.
