A brief history of customer loyalty programs
But first, for those interested, Harvard Business School has a short but comprehensive post about customer loyalty programs and a short history of it.
Here is a short version of that history:
“Premium Marketing” (as it was known back then,) in started back in the late 18th century with American retailers giving shoppers copper tokens with purchases that they could redeem for the next purchase.
The S&H Green Stamps program, was the pioneer in loyalty programs in the 19th century. Instead of today’s “reward cards”, they rewarded customers with stamps that they could trade for a variety of items.
Loyalty programs, as we know it today, started in 1981 by American Airlines when they introduced their famous frequent-flier mile program.

Today, almost all major retailers and stores have some sort of loyalty program/card that reward their most frequent shoppers.

Overall, reward/loyalty programs are definitely worth joining. The amount that you can save on your shopping each month, or eating out and accommodation, plus the discounts and other deals that you get access to certainly make them more than worthwhile.
For anyone looking to save money on their everyday purchases, hotel stays or dining out, joining a loyalty/reward program is a great idea.
We recommend that you sign up for the rewards program at any store that you shop at regularly or even semi-regularly and at any other places where you spend money often.
By doing so, you earn yourself money each and every time you shop, eat out or stay at a hotel, which you can put towards future discounts.
