1. The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army is a wonderful organization that helps people in need, such as those who are homeless or veterans.
The Salvation Army helps people in a number of ways, such as by donating items.
You can get a furniture voucher from the Salvation Army if you are under financial strain. This is a great help for people on a low income.
Just contact your local Salvation Army to find out if they offer vouchers and whether or not you’re eligible to receive one.
- You can find your local Salvation Army here.
2. Freecycle
Freecycle is a website that is designed to pair people looking to recycle old items, with people who’re looking for free stuff.
It’s an excellent website that allows you to get a huge range of items for free.
The website encourages people to reuse items, which is better for the environment, and it helps people who are in need of items, like furniture.

3. St. Vincent de Paul
St. Vincent de Paul is a Catholic volunteer organization that’s helped millions of people in need. It has tons of locations throughout the United States. It may be able to help you to secure furniture.
The St. Vincent de Paul Community Furniture Bank in Dayton, Ohio, for example, offers furniture to those who need it.
Visit their location page (link below) and then scroll to the bottom, and you’ll be able to see the organization’s locations. When you click on a location, it will take you to the website for that particular location.
On your local website, you’ll be able to see what services the organization offers to those in your community, and you can also find contact information for your local organization.
On the same page, you can use the search box at the bottom of the page, to find services near you too. You can also ask at your local Catholic Church if there are any nearby St. Vincent de Paul locations.
- Find a ST. Vincent de Paul store near you here.
4. Your local church
If you’re really struggling, then consider visiting your local church.
Explain your situation to them, and ask if they know of any way you could get free furniture locally.
Churches are great resources for free stuff in general, because they want to help those in need in their community.
Even if they can’t donate anything to you directly, the church may be able to direct you to the right resource.
5. Goodwill
Goodwill is an excellent organization to contact if you need help paying for furniture.
They have tons of donated items that they’re willing to give away to those in need.
Like with the Salvation Army, you may get a voucher to spend on furniture.
You can take your voucher into your local Goodwill and use it to buy furniture.
So if you’re looking for free furniture, then contact your local Goodwill.
- You can find your nearest Goodwill location here.
6. Craigslist
Another way to get free furniture locally is to look at the Craigslist page for your city, or nearest city.
While many people do sell stuff on Craigslist, there are also people on there who give items, including furniture away for free.
On the main page for your city, just do a search for the phrase “free stuff,” in the search bar on the left of the screen.
Then, you’ll see some drop down options. Choose the “free stuff” in “for sale” option.
You’ll then results for a wide range of items.
For example, at the time of writing, there was a sectional sofa available for free on the Washington D.C. Craigslist page.
And, on the Columbus, Ohio Craigslist page there’s a free chair available, as well as other pieces of furniture.
7. Ask on Social Media
This is a really easy way to get furniture for free in your local area. You’d be surprised by how many of your family or friends have furniture that they no longer want. You just need to let people know that you’re in need of free furniture.
So, don’t be afraid to upload a post on your Facebook page, asking if anyone has any furniture items they’d be willing to donate.
8. Check out College Campuses on Move-out day
On moving day in college towns, you can find a huge selection of items that students no longer need.
Students vacate their dorms and apartments in the spring and have nowhere to store their furniture in the summer. This means that you’ll likely find a selection of items, from sofas to futons.
Also, in late summer, and early fall, when apartment leases switch over, is another good time to find free furniture. You’ll likely find lots of discarded chairs, desks, tables, and couches in great condition, and many are just left on the sidewalk!
So do a quick drive around college campuses when students are moving out of their dorms, and you’ll likely find free stuff!
9. Visit the Thrift Store
If a thrift store receives a big donation, then it may struggle to make room for larger items. This means that they’ll offer bargains on the items that take up room, and sometimes, they even give these large items away for free.
After all resale shops are generally limited in space, so if you’re willing to haul an item of furniture away for them, then they may give it to you for free.
Just call a few of your local thrift stores to see if they have any furniture items that they’d offload for free. Let them know that you’re willing to haul it away as well!
Also, check out this post for a list of online thrift stores.
10. Check out Yard Sales
Yard sales are good places to get really cheap furniture. If you wait until the end of the day, sellers are tired and likely just want to unload their stuff. Sometimes, sellers will be willing to give an item away at a huge discount, just to get rid of it and go home!
A yard sale is also one of the best places where you can sell used appliances for cash. That means you (as a buyer) may be able to pick some up for really good prices.
You might even be able to get an item for free – just offer to haul it away for the seller.
11. Visit Storage Facilities
Have you ever seen that A&E show, Storage Wars?
It’s a show about auctions for storage units.
Well, these auctions can actually be a great place to get your hands on some free stuff.
Buyers bid on entire storage units, but it’s likely that they’ll only actually see a couple of things of value that they’re actually interested in.
So the buyer might want to just offload the pieces that they’re not interested in. So if you offer to dispose of old furniture for free, the buyer will likely be happy about it!
You get to keep the furniture, and the buyer gets rid of the items that they don’t want. It’s a win-win situation.
You can use AuctionZip.com to search for upcoming storage auctions. Or, you can contact storage facilities in your area to ask if they have any upcoming events.
To make sure that you are permitted to walk to the units, register with the auctioneer when you arrive
Also, consider leaving a business card at local storage facilities and let staff know that you’ll haul away any furniture that tenants might leave behind.
You can find a list of upcoming storage auctions near you here.
12. Ask for Gift Cards
If any of your friends or family members ask you what you want for your next birthday or for Christmas, tell them that you need some new furniture, so you’d like gift cards for a specific furniture store or any store that sells furniture.
This is such an easy way for you to get money to spend on furniture!
13. Check out Reddit
We mention Reddit a lot here on Money Pantry, and that’s because it’s such a great website for finding freebies.
There are a few sections, like the Barter and Recycle Reddit forums where you can find free stuff.
And, the Gift Card Exchange section is another good place to check, since you can turn that gift card into free furniture.
We also have a post on Reddit freebies, which you can check out here.
14. Check with people who’re moving
If you see on social media, like on Facebook for example, that a friend or family member is moving, or you they tell you they’re moving, then ask them if they have any furniture that they won’t be taking with them to their new home.
Most of the time, when people move they have at least one piece of furniture that they don’t want – perhaps the sofa won’t fit in their new living room, so they need to buy a smaller one, or maybe they just want a new coffee table for their new place.
Whatever the reason, it’s likely that you can get a piece of furniture for free, and if not for free, then at a really low cost!
15. Ask on online forums
If you regularly use a particular online forum, then consider letting your forum friends know that you’re in need of some free furniture. There may be a section for members to sell or trade items. If not, just go to the general thread or the most appropriate section of the forum.
16. Look out for Spring Clean up Events
In some communities, Spring Cleanup events are held.
At these events, people in the community are invited to bring items that they don’t need to a particular location, such as a park. So it can be a good place to get free used furniture!
Check your local community calendar or website to learn about upcoming events.
17. Earn gift cards and use them to get free furniture
Rewards websites, like InstaGC and Swagbucks, pay you to do easy tasks, like:
- Complete surveys
- Watch videos
- Shop online
- Browse the internet
- Play games
You can redeem your points for a huge variety of retailers, including those that sell furniture, such as Amazon.
You can save up your gift cards and use them to buy furniture, at no cost.
This is such an easy way to get your furniture for free.
18. Heroes Warehouse
Heroes Warehouse is a non-profit organization that helps formerly homeless veterans to furnish their homes.
It does this by providing donated furniture to veterans at no cost.
It accepts new and gently used furniture, so it’s a good way to get furniture for free.
- Visit their website and contact the organization for help here.
19. Local furniture banks
Local furniture banks can be a good place to find free furniture.
These banks help the needy, including:
- Families and individuals who are moving out of homelessness.
- Families and individuals who are moving from transitional housing.
- People living with HIV/AIDS.
- People who’re victims of natural disaster or fire.
- People who’ve lost their jobs.
- Victims of domestic violence who are relocating.
- Foster children who are aging out.
Here are a few good furniture banks
- NW Furniture Bank (Tacoma, Washington)
- Furniture Bank of Metro Atlanta
- Furniture Bank of Southeastern Michigan
- Furniture Bank of Ohio
Do an internet search for your city or state, followed by the phrase “furniture bank.”
People donate furniture to these banks, and the furniture banks then donate items to those who need them.
Also, the Furniture Bank Association of North America is a great website for finding furniture banks near you.
- Just visit this page of the website to find a furniture bank near you.
20. Ask your friends to ask their friends
Ask your friends to ask their friends and family for furniture for you.
If your friends/family ask around for you, then it’s likely that they’ll come across someone who’s looking to offload a piece of unwanted furniture.
21. Check Facebook Groups
There are lots of groups on Facebook that are dedicated to helping people to find free stuff.
There’s one group called ALL free stuff that’s definitely worth checking out.
On there, you can find a variety of free items, including free mattresses, beds and of course furniture.
At the time of writing, there were posts on the group page offering a free kitchen table, TV, sofa, and dresser.
So, it’s a great page to follow if you’re in need of furniture for free.
Also, you can do a search for free stuff groups on Facebook to find even more freebies.
22. Red Cross
If you’ve been the victim of a natural disaster, and need to replace damaged or lost furniture, then the Red Cross may be able to help you.
- Contact Red Cross here.
23. Facebook Marketplace
Another online source of free furniture is Facebook Marketplace. While it does focus primarily on the buying and selling of goods, you can also find some free items on there.
Ashley Furniture Free Bed Assistance Program
Some furniture stores also have programs for low income families or victims of natural disasters where they give away furniture.
One of those programs is Ashley Furniture’s Hope to Dream Program through which they giveaway free beds to children and families in need.
It’s a great program that I wish more furniture stores would do to help those in need.
To see if you qualify and participating stores near you, visit this page.
Free Furniture Giveaway
Ok, this one won’t get you free furniture, but it will help others. If you do have an extra bed, table, couch, sofa or whatever else that you don’t need or use anymore, please consider donating it to someone in need.
You know, we get so used to our own lives that we tend to forget that there are people out there who really struggle with their day to day lives. One less table may not mean much for you, but having that couch in a needy family’s home can make their house fill more like home. So if you can, please do consider donating your unused furniture to other people in your area.
You can find a list of families in need by asking your local church, charity organizations or even by asking your friends and neighbors if they know anyone in need.
Thank you!
