In today’s post, I’ve listed some of the best places to sell used furniture. To help you out, I’ve separated the list into places where you can sell furniture online and places where you can sell furniture locally.
Where to Sell Used Furniture Online
One of the best places to sell furniture is online. Often, you can set the price you want to sell your items for, and you get access to a huge range of customers especially if you’re using a well-known site like eBay.
Online, you can sell a huge range of items, like:
- Coffee tables
- End tables
- TV stands
- Side tables
- Office chairs
- Dining tables
- Dining chairs
Here’s where you can sell used furniture online…
Let’s start out here with eBay. Now, the reason I think that eBay is one of the best places to sell stuff is because of its popularity. We all know at least one person who sells stuff or has bought stuff on eBay right?
It’s one of the most popular websites in the world meaning you can get your furniture listing out there in front of millions of people.
Now, you can list up to 50 items on eBay for free, which I think is pretty great.
You’ll have to pay $0.30 per listing if you want to list more than 50 items.
When your furniture sells there, you will need to pay a 10% commission. So that’s something to keep in mind when you are listing your stuff for sale.
Next on the list we have Webstore. This is an auction site, like eBay, where you can sell your stuff. It offers online auctions and local classifieds.
The site is well-reviewed, with 4.1 stars on Trustpilot, which is a rating of “Great.” So, it’s a legit site.
What’s great about the site is that you can list stuff for free on there.
And, it doesn’t charge you any final value fees or commissions on your sales either, so you get to keep 100% of the selling price.
Next on the list we have Etsy. Now, I know a lot of people love Etsy for furniture because you can find some really great pieces on there.
It’s a really popular website making it a good place to list furniture for sale.
While Etsy doesn’t charge you any monthly fees to sell through the site, it does charge you to list items for sale on there.
You also need to pay commission when your stuff sells. It costs $0.20 to list items on Etsy.
It also charges you a 5% transaction fee and 3% plus $0.25 payment processing fee when your item sells.
If you have vintage furniture to sell, you may want to try out Chairish. Through the site, you can sell modern and vintage furniture. You can ship your items with local pickup as an option as well. You get 70% or more of the sale price sent right to your PayPal account.
Bonanza is an online auction website where you can sell a multitude of different items, including furniture.
The site is much less competitive than eBay, with just 25,000 sellers on there, compared to the 25 million sellers you’ll find on eBay. So your listing is less likely to get lost on the site.
You can post your stuff for sale on there for free, but you will have to pay a 3.5% commission fee when your stuff sells.
6. Ruby Lane
With Ruby Lane you can sell furniture online. The website is mostly focused on antique furniture.
You can list 50 items for free on there. But, you do need to pay a maintenance fee. It costs $54 a month, and you can list 50 items for free, and you have to pay from 1 cent to 30 cents (depending on the number of items you have listed) after that.
You are also charged a service fee of 6.7% based on the Purchase Order total (this does not include sales tax), and it is capped at $250.
Sell vintage and antique furniture at The Internet Antique Shop (TIAS). You can place a classified ad on the site if you just have one or a few items to sell. Or you can open an online shop if you have multiple items to sell.
You can sell stuff for a fixed price or at auction.
When your items sell you pay 10% on the items that you sell at a fixed price on TIAS.com or 2% commission on items you sell at online auctions through TIAS.com’s auction loading/management system.
Also, you may need to pay a monthly fee. Visit this page to learn more about the fees charged by the site.
You might want to consider Shopify if you want to turn selling used furniture into a business.
Rather than being an online marketplace or store, Shopify is an eCommerce platform. With it, you can turn a website into an eCommerce store.
Basically, you can set up your own online store through Shopify.
It’s easy to use and you get access to features like an embedded cart and a secure checkout.
While Shopify is free for 14 days, after that you will need to pay:
- $29 a month for a Basic membership
- $79 a month for the next level up
- $299 for an Advanced Shopify account
Another place to sell your used furniture online is on Apartment Therapy’s Bazaar.
You can list furniture there without having to pay listing fees. When customers purchase your items, you are charged a 3% transaction fee and a 2.9% plus $0.30 Standard Stripe Processing Fee.
What’s good about Apartment Therapy’s Bazaar is that you can set up your own store on there, which is great if you have multiple items to sell, right?
Another place to sell is on LiveAuctioneers. It’s an auction website where you can sell your furniture. It’s a legit place to sell with an “Excellent” rating from customers on Trustpilot, and an “A” rating from the BBB where the company is accredited.
With LiveAuctioneers, you can offer to ship your items or arrange a local pickup if you want to.
Another site to try out is eBid. I think this is a great alternative to eBay if you’re looking to sell stuff. You can sell items in a huge range of categories, including, of course, furniture.
eBid has great reviews online too with 4.2 stars on Trustpilot, which is a rating of “Great.”
Next on the list we have 1stDibs. This is another great option.
You can apply to be one of the site’s sellers. 1stDibs is a good place to sell furniture because it helps you to sell your items globally, amassing more than 200 million sales last year.
It offers fully insured shipping, worldwide, guaranteed, risk-free transactions, and lots of other benefits.
Sotheby’s was founded in 1744 making it incredibly well-established in the industry. The company holds auctions in Paris, London, and New York. Its auctions feature tables, chairs, and other vintage furniture pieces. It also sells vintage, antique, and contemporary furniture through its online marketplace, Sotheby’s Home.
You can sell European and American furniture through Sotheby’s.
The company will be able to provide you with shipping quotes and logistical support.
Where to Sell Used Furniture Near You
Another great option is to sell your furniture near you. Now, the reason that you may want to sell locally rather than online is because it can save you money on shipping fees. Or, it can save the customer from having to pay more to get the item shipped – and high shipping fees can deter customers from purchasing an item.
Also, you can often get paid on the spot when you sell locally.
Here are some places where you can sell furniture locally:
14. Flea market
Flea markets are great places to sell your furniture because you can set your own prices and get paid on the spot.
Now, the only issue is that you generally have to pay to rent a table or a booth. So this can cut into your profits a little bit. If you have quite a few pieces to sell, then flea markets are a good choice.
15. Yard sale
Another option that can work really well is having a yard sale. Yes, it’s a bit of an old-fashioned choice compared to selling on a site like eBay, but it’s still a great option.
You can often tap into a market of people who don’t shop online much and just prefer to shop in-person.
Now, since people are looking to get bargains at yard sales, this method isn’t the best if you’re looking to get the most money from your stuff. But, for making money fast it’s a great option as you can get paid on the spot.
It’s also a good option if you have a lot of items to sell at once.
It’s a good option to set your prices a little higher so that shoppers have room to haggle. So decide beforehand how low of a price you’re willing to sell each piece of furniture for. For a quick guide check out our post on how to price used furniture so you can get the most money.
Next on the list we have Craigslist. I think that Craigslist is a great option for offloading unwanted items because you have a lot of control over the whole selling process.
First of all, you can set your own prices, so you’re not at the whim of a store like a pawn shop or consignment store to give you a price.
Secondly, since so many people use Craigslist, depending on the city where you live, your listing could get 100s or even 1000s of views.
Thirdly, it’s just so convenient for selling stuff because you can arrange meetups with local buyers.
And, finally, Craigslist doesn’t charge you to list stuff for sale on there. That’s great right?
Well, it gets better, as Craigslist doesn’t charge you any commission when your stuff sells either!
With Route 66 Furniture, you submit details on the furniture that you want to sell and photos of it, and then send it to the company. Then, the company will contact you to confirm pickup, or ask any follow-up questions.
Then, the company’s delivery team will meet you at the agreed upon time to pick up your furniture and it will list your furniture for sale. You earn 50% of the final sale price.
18. Local consignment stores
Okay, so local consignment stores are another place you could sell your unwanted furniture. Just take it to the store for an employee to evaluate your stuff and quote you a price. If you agree to sell your stuff for that price, then your furniture will be displayed for sale in-store.
Because consignment stores want to make a sale, they really push to sell your items. After all, they want to make a profit, right?
However, the downside is that they take a cut of your profits. This can be anywhere from 20% to 40% (or even more than that) of the amount your furniture sells for.
Also, in addition to charging commission, some stores will charge you a fee if your item doesn’t sell.
Since each consignment store sets its own rules and policies on the selling process and what commission it takes, you should enquire about rules and commission rates before you place the furniture for sale with a certain store.
19. Pawn shops
You could contact your local pawn shops to see if they’d be willing to purchase furniture from you.
Pawnshops are good for making money fast. For getting the most money though they may not be the best option. This is because these stores want to make a profit reselling your items. They tend to offer a lower price than what they can resell the item for. This means that they’re not likely to offer you the best price for your stuff.
If you just want to unload unwanted furniture to make some quick cash though, pawn shops are certainly worth considering.
20. Local auction houses
If you have some valuable pieces or antique furniture you should try selling through local auction houses. Also, if you have multiple pieces of furniture to sell, then an auction house can also be a good choice.
Auction houses will sell your stuff at an auction and then they take a percentage of the profits.
What’s good about selling to auction houses is that because they want people to bid, they foster an atmosphere of excitement.
Part of the reason why people like going to auctions is for the excitement of competing with others while bidding on items. This competitive and exciting environment can drive up the price that your furniture sells for meaning you make more money.
The auction house wants to make a profit too, so they want your stuff to sell – hence the exciting atmosphere they work to build.
Another good thing about auctions is that they are often well-advertised.
Auction houses want to attract a large audience, so they make sure to advertise.
As I said above, because auction houses take a commission when your items sell, do keep this in mind if you are considering this option.
OfferUp is a website and apps where people can buy and sell items locally. If you’re looking to offload some furniture, then you might want to give it a try.
You list modern and vintage furniture on there. The best part about using OfferUp is that it allows you to list stuff for sale for free.
Plus, you can set your own prices!
Next on the list we have 5miles. This is another website and app where you can list stuff for sale locally.
What’s great about 5miles is that it doesn’t charge you anything to list furniture for sale on there.
And, you also get to set your own prices, which gives you more control over how much money you make.
Another good option for selling furniture locally is to use Facebook Marketplace.
This is another platform where you can sell stuff to people near you. Now, what’s good about the site is that it doesn’t charge listing fees. So you don’t’ have to pay to put your furniture up for sale on there.
Also, you get to set your own prices, giving you more control over what you earn.
Next on the list we have ClassifiedAds.com. As you can tell from the name, this is an online classified ads site. On there, you could put an ad for your furniture!
You can sell pretty much anything on there, including, of course, furniture, as the site offers tons of different categories and subcategories.
What’s great about ClassifiedAds.com is that you don’t have to register with the website in order to post an ad on there.
You will need to provide your name, email address, and phone number though when you create your listing. But, the email address is kept private, so it won’t be published on the listing. You can also choose to keep your phone number private as well.
25. Used Furniture Stores
You might want to consider selling furniture to a used or discount furniture store near you. Most cities and towns have a store where you can purchase used furniture. So this is definitely an option that’s worth considering.
To find these stores, just go to Google, or whatever search engine you normally use and enter the term “used furniture store near me,” or “used furniture store [name of your city or your zip code],” and you should get plenty of results.
Bookoo is a website where you can buy and sell items with your neighbors. So, for offloading your furniture locally, it’s definitely a good option.
It’s basically a classified ads website where you can view and post ads in lots of different countries, like:
- The USA
- The United Kingdom
The site claims to have more than 2.6 million neighbors who’ve used the site to sell and save money.
You can sell a variety of items on there, including furniture.
If you’re looking for a really easy way to sell your unwanted furniture, then you might want to try Remoov.
The company provides a removal service where they’ll pick up your stuff and sell it for you.
Just submit some photos and send them via text or you can schedule an in-home appointment.
Remoov will bring its truck and collect everything that you want to sell. Then, it will update you when your items are sold.
28. Put an ad in your local paper
You could also consider putting an ad in your local paper. It’s a good way to find local buyers who are in the market for some new furniture pieces. What’s good about this option is that it allows you to set your own prices, so you have much more control over the amount of money you make, compared with other options on this list like selling through local consignment stores.
29. Local antique stores
Do you have any antique stores nearby? If so, then consider selling your used furniture at one of these stores.
If you have vintage or antique furniture, then this is definitely a good option for you.
Since antique stores are always looking to restock their inventory with new pieces, you could sell your stuff to them.
Some stores may even allow you to rent a space at their shop if you have multiple antiques to sell.
The issue with this option though is that it’s not the best if you’re looking to make the most money from your stuff. This is because antique stores want to make a profit from your stuff, so they tend to offer a lower price than what the item is worth. So they buy low to sell high basically.
This can, however, be a convenient option because most of us have at least one antique store nearby.
To find stores near you, enter the term “antique store near me” or “antique store [name of your city or your zip code],” into whatever search engine you use. This should give you nearby stores.
Just call ahead to check whether these stores purchase furniture.
AptDeco is another place to sell furniture. The only issue is that its service is only available to those in the following areas:
- New York City
- New York North
- Long Island
- New Jersey
You can list items for sale on there within just a few minutes. The site will recommend a price to you, but you decide how much to sell stuff for.
Once a customer requests to purchase your item, the company will notify you to ask you to confirm its availability.
Once a customer purchases your item, AptDeco will help you to coordinate the pickup and delivery of your furniture. The company will give you some dates to choose from so that it can come and collect your furniture.
When the item sells, you keep 81% of the sale price. You’re paid in 2 to 5 business days, depending on your bank’s processing time.
What’s great about selling furniture through AptDeco is that it advertises your items, handles payment processing, mediates returns and disputes, and it handles lots of other tasks to make selling easier.
31. Oodle Marketplace
Oodle is a Craigslist alternative that makes it easy to buy and sell used stuff locally including furniture and home décor.
The process is pretty much the same as with any other classified site. Post an ad with a few pictures and a little detail about the item(s) you are selling. Potential buyers will contact you and if everything works out, they get the furniture and you get the cash!
In this section, I just wanted to cover some common questions that I see when people plan to sell their used furniture.
Hopefully, this helps you to offload your unwanted furniture.
How can I sell my furniture fast?
Okay, the best way to sell furniture fast is at a pawn shop. You get cash on the spot for your stuff. A few other good options for selling furniture fast include:
- Route66 Furniture
- Yard sales
Where can I get money for my furniture?
You can get money for your furniture from:
- Route 66 Furniture
- Facebook Marketplace
And, all of the other places on the list above.
How can I sell all my furniture at once?
If you have multiple items to sell and want to sell all of your furniture at once, then these are the best options:
- Yard sale
- Consignment stores
- Antique stores
- Flea markets
- Local auction houses
How do I sell secondhand furniture?
So, how exactly do you go about selling used furniture? Well, it really depends on the option that you choose.
For example, if you sell to a place like a pawn shop or consignment store where they act as the “middleman,” then the process will be different than if you were to sell the furniture yourself through a site like Craigslist or 5miles or at a yard sale.
Still though, the tips for success remain the same.
Below, I’ll give you tips on how to sell secondhand furniture.
1. Note the condition your items are in
The first step is to examine your furniture to see what condition it’s in. You may like it, but if a piece is really beaten up, will it really be desirable to customers?
Think about whether the piece is actually sellable. A few scratches are fine. And things like marks and scuffs can be cleaned or buffed away. Clean up the furniture as best you can before you plan to sell it. And if the item is in poor condition, consider whether it’s worth selling it at all.
2. Set a price
Okay, so now that you’ve cleaned up your furniture, it’s time to start pricing it for sale.
Now, how you price it will depend on where you’re selling it.
Pricing your stuff when selling to a middleman
Let’s say that you’re planning to sell to a place like:
- A pawn shop
- Local antique store
- Consignment store
I like to think of these places as “middlemen” who purchase your furniture so that they can sell it again for a profit.
So they tend to buy low and sell high. This doesn’t mean that you won’t get much for your stuff though.
Those places will give you quotes. You won’t set your own prices. These places will appraise your items and give you a quote.
It can be a good idea to get a few quotes so that you can see which place offers the best price.
Of course, if it’s your goal to sell stuff fast, then this won’t be as important for you, but it can still be worth getting a few different quotes.
Pricing your stuff when selling items yourself
Let’s say that you plan to sell the stuff directly to customers through a site like:
- Facebook Marketplace
You sell directly to the customer so you can set your own price. This means that you aren’t dependent on a store to give you a quote.
This is beneficial as it gives you more control over your earnings, but you are also responsible for researching prices yourself.
It’s important not to set the price too high as you’ll deter potential customers. On the other hand, you don’t want to set the price too low and lowball yourself, right?
You want to set a price that is fair to both you and the customer.
The best way to set the right price is to see what other people are charging for a similar item. You can do this by having a quick search on sites like eBay and Craigslist for what furniture piece it is you plan to sell. This is a good way to get an idea of what the market value is on the item you are selling.
It’s important when setting prices to be realistic. A coffee table that’s scratched or scuffed is going to fetch less money than a coffee table without any marks or wear and tear.
3. Be honest about the condition of your furniture
Being honest about the condition of your furniture is important. You don’t want to say that something is in great condition if it’s not.
Sure, it may be tempting to put on your eBay listing that your bookcase is in excellent condition.
However, if you sell the bookcase and the customer gets it and sees that it’s covered in scratches, then they aren’t going to be happy.
A lot of these sites allow customers to leave reviews on sellers. So if you have multiple items to sell and get a bad review for the first one, then it’s going to be tougher for you to make sales in the future.
Also, it’s just nice to be honest. You wouldn’t want to get an item that’s not as it was described in the listing, right?
So, make sure that you mention any marks, stains, scratches, wear and tear, and damage in the listing.
It’s also a good idea to take photos of any damage or marks on the item. Some people won’t mind if a table has a couple of scratches. What people do mind is getting an item that’s not in the condition they expected it to be.
So make sure you are honest. This applies when you are selling to a consignment store or pawn shop. Or any store really. You don’t want to call the store and say, “Hey, I have a bookshelf that’s in great condition,” and they say “Great,” but then when you bring it in, it’s scuffed and worn, and the store decides they don’t want it. You’ve wasted your time and the store’s time.
So be honest about the condition that your furniture is in.
4. Take some great photos
If you are listing your stuff for sale on a site like Craigslist or eBay, then you’ll need some great photos of your furniture.
Photograph your furniture in an area where the lighting is great. Make sure the photos are clear. Grainy or blurry photos are not going to entice buyers.
Also, if the item has any damage to it, make sure that you photograph that too so that the buyer knows what to expect.
5. Write a great headline and description
You will also need a great headline and description for your listing if you’re selling on sites like Etsy, Craigslist, eBay, or eBid.
Your headline should include:
- The name of the item: You want it to appear in the search engines.
- Specifics: So, for example “dining table” is too generic. “Mahogany dining table,” is much better. Make sure you include details like color, material, etc.
- A couple of the item’s best features: For example, “Victorian-style mahogany dining table for sale, barely used, and in great condition.”
You want it to be succinct but also offer enough details for the listing to appear in the search results and to get potential customers to click on it.
Once you get customers to click through to your listing, you want to make sure that they have a great description to read.
Make sure you include:
- The dimensions of the furniture: People want to know an item’s size so that they can determine whether or not it fits their space.
- Any wear and tear or damage to the item: As I said earlier, you want to be honest about the condition the piece is in. So make sure you list any dents, marks, scratches, etc. in the listing.
- Materials, color, brand, etc.: If you’re selling a coffee, list what wood it’s made from. Or if you’re selling a sofa, list what color it is and what fabric it’s made from. All of these details are important to consumers. If your sofa is made from real leather for example, then mention that.
- A note for antique or high value items: If you have an antique or high value item, then it can be a good idea to mention this in the description. You could also include a photo of the item’s label or receipt, or any certificates of authenticity to prove it’s worth.
- The reason you’re selling the item: This one isn’t required, but it can still be a good idea. Most people like to hear the story behind why a person is selling. For example, you could say something like, “Sofa is in great condition. We’re only selling because it no longer fits our growing family.” Or, “Beautiful, antique Victorian dresser. Only selling because we’re relocating, and it won’t fit in our new home.” Just providing a little extra detail like that can help to close the sale.
Hopefully, these tips help you to sell your furniture quickly and for a good amount!
Do pawn shops buy furniture?
Yes – and I included this option on the list above. Lots of stores do purchase furniture. It’s really best to call ahead though so that you don’t waste your time. Pawnshops can be a good option if you’re looking to sell furniture quickly. But they’re not the best option for making the most money. Check out the section on selling to pawn shops for more information.
Is selling used furniture profitable?
It can be!
Let me explain this a little more.
If you bought a sideboard 5 years ago and you’re moving, and it won’t fit in your new home, then you could sell it.
Will you get exactly what you originally paid for it? Unlikely. You may do if you have an item that’s on-trend, in excellent condition, or antique. Otherwise, you likely won’t.
But, you can still recoup some of the money that you spent.
Now, let’s say, on the other hand, that you picked up a cheap coffee table at a flea market. You paint the table making it look much better than when you first bought it, and therefore you have increased its value, and you may be able to sell it for more than what you originally paid for it.
This is definitely the way to go if you want to sell used furniture for a profit. You want to purchase items at a low cost, refurbish them, which could be as simple as sanding and repainting an item, and then sell them for more than you originally paid.
Okay, so if you’re looking to sell used furniture for a profit, buying low and selling high is great.
But you know what’s even better?
Getting something for free and selling that. You make a 100% profit!
So, just how do you go about doing this?
Well, lots of websites, like Craigslist, have a section where people give away free things. This includes furniture.
I’ve seen beds, bookcases, coffee tables, sofas, and more on there. Many are in pretty good condition.
You pick up one of these free items, clean it up, and sell it for a profit. I know lots of people who’ve earned $100s or even $1,000s doing this.
Here are some places where you can find free furniture to resell:
- Craigslist (You can find the “Free” section under the “For Sale” category of your city’s Craigslist.)
- Facebook Marketplace
You could even turn this into a fulltime business.
What is the best place to sell refurbished furniture?
Flipping furniture for profit is a great side hustle. Lots of people choose to refurbish furniture and then flip it for a profit. If you are planning to sell refurbished furniture, then I would recommend these places:
- Ruby Lane
- Flea market
They’re great for listing refurbished items for sale.
So, Where’s the Best Place to Sell Used Furniture?
There are lots of options if you’re looking to sell furniture. Which one is the best really depends on you. All of them have their benefits.
Generally speaking, anytime there’s a middleman, you’re going to make less money.
The more directly you can sell, the more profit you can make – in most cases.
For example, if you sell your stuff to a pawn shop, they want to make a profit on it. So they will give you less money than what they’ll eventually sell the item for.
This means that you won’t make as much of a profit.
That being said, selling to a pawn shop can get you money fast. This makes it a good option if you’re looking to make money quickly.
For the most profit, you want to cut out the middleman and sell directly to customers. There are lots of websites that facilitate this and many local options too.
You can sell directly to customers through websites like Craigslist, OfferUp, eBay, and Etsy.
Of course, some of these sites do charge a commission when your furniture sells. For the most part though, this is less than 10%. In the case of Craigslist, there’s no commission charged, and no listing fees either, meaning you keep all of the profits.
You could also consider selling directly at a flea market. However, you may have to factor in the cost of renting a table or a booth, which can eat into your profits. But, it can make you money fast.
Finally, yard sales are good because you can sell your stuff on the spot.
If at the end of the day you decide against selling your old furniture, don’t just trash it. Consider donating them. Check out our post on where to donate furniture for a list of best places.
But if you want to sell, all of the places on the list have their benefits. It’s really up to you which ones you use. Give these places a try!
