Mystery shopping might just be the perfect gig for those of us looking for a fun and flexible way to earn some extra cash.
Not only do you get to shop and dine out for free, but you also get paid for your time and effort.
In this post, I’ll be sharing a list of the best mystery shopping companies to work for.
What will I learn?
What Mystery Shopping and How Does it Work?
It’s a lot like online surveys and focus groups, but instead of just answering questions, you get to pose as a real customer and experience what a normal customer would.
The goal is to gather data that can help companies improve their customer service, store display, and whatever else impacts their bottom line.

These companies can range from restaurants and hotels to department stores and movie theaters.
As an “agent,” you are assigned shopping jobs that come with all the details you need to know.
For example, you may be assigned to stay at a hotel and evaluate their room service, or dine in a restaurant and report on the quality of their food and service.
Some assignments may require you to ask certain questions, buy certain products, or talk with customer service, while others may require you to observe the interaction between staff and other customers.
Whatever the assignment, the ultimate goal is to report back your experience so the company can use that information to improve customer service, store appearance, product pricing/placement, and more.
How Much Money Can You Make as a Mystery Shopper?
The amount of money you are paid depends on many factors – the company you’re working with, the assignment itself, how long it takes, etc.
Normally, all expenses are paid by the research firm conducting the study. In some cases, they may have you pay the bill, but they reimburse you afterward.
Sometimes, your reward comes in the form of free stuff.
For example, if your assignment was to shop at a clothing store and spend $100, you get to keep what you bought without having to pay for it.
Or if you were assigned to stay at a hotel for 2 nights, the company pays for the hotel, meals, and all your travel expenses.

But in most cases, there is a monetary reward.
You get paid anywhere from $20 to $200 or more for your work.

A Certified Brand Agent is a BA who is tested and certified to ensure that they have a complete understanding of a specific client engagement.
Because of their advanced training, CBAs receive privileged status for work and higher earning potential.

Protect Yourself from Mystery Shopping Scams
As a newcomer to secret shopping, it’s important to be cautious when searching for a legitimate mystery shopping company or website.
Sadly, there are countless scams out there waiting to take advantage of unsuspecting individuals.
The most infamous scam is the “Western Union Mystery Shopping” or “Mystery Shopping Check” scheme.
Here’s how it works:
You receive a check in the mail or by email, supposedly from a reputable market research company offering you a mystery shopping job.
You’re instructed to deposit the check in your bank account and transfer a small amount via Western Union to a designated recipient, often someone who claims to be a supplier or a store you are supposed to evaluate.
The rest of the money, you’re told, is your payment for the mystery shopping assignment, the details of which will be sent to you soon.
Excited to start earning money, you deposit the check, send the money via Western Union, and wait for further instructions.
Days later, you find out that the check you deposited has bounced, leaving you in debt for the entire amount you transferred via Western Union.
In other words, you’ve lost your own money, in addition to having your hopes and time wasted.
Don’t fall victim to a mystery shopping scam. Legitimate companies will never ask you to wire them money or deposit a check before starting an assignment.
Be wary of scammers using trusted company names to trick you. Do your research and don’t hesitate to reach out to a legitimate company to verify the authenticity of the offer.
Stay vigilant and use your common sense to protect yourself from mystery shopping scams.
