Up until just a few years ago, there were no “apps to sell stuff” for selling your used stuff.
The best site to sell used stuff was Craigslist and maybe a few other classified sites nobody visited!
Oh yeah, you could also spend a few days organizing, tagging and setting your tables to hold a garage sale on the weekend only to have a garage full of garage sale leftover!
Thankfully, that all changed with the rise of user-friendly selling apps that connect buyers with sellers both locally and around the country.
For example, with these local selling apps, you can find buyers near you that are interested in what you have to sell so you can forgo the hassle and cost of shipping stuff to buyers.
So now, whether you want to get rid of a sofa you don’t need anymore, a bike that’s been cluttering up your garage, an old TV that is heavier than a pile of bricks or clothes that no longer fit you, there are free apps like OfferUp that make listing your stuff for selling a breeze.

It’s a secure app that encourages verification of all of its member accounts.
It offers a wide range of features – one of the best being the ability to voice record. This allows you to create a detailed description of your product, quickly and easily.

You can also communicate through the app, making the buying/selling process easier.
3. Poshmark
- Available for: Android – iOS
If you’re a fan of luxury fashion, then Poshmark is the app for you. With this free app, you can sell high-end handbags, shoes, clothing and other fashion accessories.

BookScouter is a fantastic app for selling all kinds of used books, including textbooks.

Just enter the ISBN or title of your book, and BookScouter will display offers from the top book buyback sites.
Once you find the best deal, you can ship the book for free.
What I like about using BookScouter is that instead of manually going to different book buyback sites to enter ISBN and other book info to get prices, you enter it once in BookScouter and it checks all those sites for you!
5. Varage Sale
- Available for: Android – iOS
Varage sale (‘varage’ is a portmanteau for virtual garage) is an online garage sale.
The app allows you to buy and sell all of the items you’d expect to find at a yard sale, like clothing, toys, books and cribs.
Currently, this community-centric app is only available to users in select cities.

For selling clothing, gadgets and electronics, there’s no better app than Mercari. With this app you can sell a plethora of new and used items, and keep track of your sales within the app.

10. Carousell
- Available for: Android – iOS
Whether it is clothing or gadgets, you can use Carousell to sell almost anything. With this app, you can create a beautiful listing in under 30 seconds. It provides a number of great features, like the ability to instantly share listings on social media.
Carousell differs from others in this list in that it doesn’t require you to take payments within the app. Instead, you’re supposed to meet with the potential buyer offline, at a safe location that both parties have previously agreed upon and then send money using another method, like PayPal for example. So, this gives you much more flexibility when selling an item.
11. Shpock
- Available for: Android – iOS
Shpock gives users quick and easy access to all of the gems on sale in their neighborhood. Using this app, you can quickly and easily sell your things to those in your local area.

17. Vestiaire Collective (Former Tradesy)
- Available for: Android – iOS
If you are looking for a “fashion-forward” selling app, Vestiaire Collective is the one.
It’s mostly focused on women’s clothing, shoes and accessories.
Once you create your listing you can set your price and preferred shipping methods. Before you publish it you can review your earnings breakdown with all fees Vestiaire Collective takes.
Once the item sells you ship it directly to the buyer. Once the buyer receives the item you get paid in your account and you can use the money as cash on the website to buy stuff or transfer to your bank account.
18. eBay
- Available for: Android – iOS
Sure, eBay has kind of gone out of style (mainly because they raised their fees so much that thousands of small-time sellers left the platform), but it is still a great platform to sell your stuff on since it is still popular.
If you don’t have an account yet, install the app for your device, then set up an eBay account and create a seller profile.
Take a few clear, well-lit pictures to really show off your item. Write honest, detailed descriptions about the item’s condition, size, and any flaws.
Then decide whether to go for an auction or a fixed-price listing.
If you have no idea how much to sell something for, do a little research to see how much similar items are going for and price your item accordingly.
19. Facebook Marketplace
- Available for: Android – iOS
Facebook Marketplace is a great platform for selling items locally. Whether it’s furniture, electronics, or clothes, you can quickly list and sell your used items to people nearby.
Since Facebook has millions of daily users, your listing can reach a wide audience.
And the best part?
There are no listing fees!
What’s cool about using Facebook is that you can even chat directly with potential buyers.
20. ThredUp
- Available for: Android – iOS
ThredUp is an awesome app for selling secondhand clothing, shoes, and accessories.
Now, ThredUp works differently than other apps. You have to actually send your stuff to them. They will then inspect everything and do all the listing work themselves (taking pictures, writing descriptions, etc.).
You can choose your own prices or let ThredUp handle it. For those of us who like a hands-off approach, ThredUp is the way to go!
And yes, they charge you a fee when your stuff sells. ThredUp’s service fee is $14.99 per 30 lb-capacity Standard bag or $34.99 per Premium bag.
21. Craigslist
- Available for: Android – iOS
Oh Craigslist, the original platform to buy and sell stuff online!
When it comes to selling apps and platforms that are totally free, as in there are no listing or sales fees, you can’t get any better than Craigslist.
All you need to do is take a few good pictures, add detailed descriptions, and mention your location to attract buyers in your area.
22. Nextdoor
- Available for: Android – iOS
Nextdoor, as the name suggests, is a neighborhood-based app that makes it easy to sell items to people in your local community.
It’s perfect for things like furniture, appliances, or household goods, since buyers are often looking for deals close by.
The app has a “For Sale & Free” section where you can post listings with photos and descriptions.
Best of all, it’s free to use, and you can easily set up local meetups for pickups.
23. Swappa Marketplace
- Available for: Android – iOS
If you are looking for a reliable app to sell used electronics like smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other gadgets, Swappa is a great option.
All you need to do is list your item and set a price.
What I particularly like about Swappa is that when your item sells, you get paid immediately via PayPal before you even ship your item to the buyer.
The app is super easy to use, allowing you to quickly upload photos and describe your product.
24. The RealReal (Best app for selling luxury items)
- Available for: Android – iOS
The RealReal is a luxury consignment app focused on high-end fashion, accessories, jewelry, and home decor. You’ve probably seen their ads on TV.
To get started, you can schedule a free pickup or send your item to The RealReal. Their experts will then authenticate and appraise your item.
Once they do that, your item gets listed.
You get paid via direct deposit, site credit, or check once your item sells.
25. Instagram
- Available for: Android – iOS
Instagram is a visually-driven platform that’s great for selling items.
By setting up a business account, you can take advantage of features like Instagram Shops and Stories to showcase your products to a wide audience.
Just post high-quality photos or videos, write detailed descriptions, and use relevant hashtags to boost visibility.
You can also engage directly with potential buyers through comments and DMs. With Instagram’s integration with Facebook Marketplace, managing listings is easier, and its large built-in audience helps you find interested buyers quickly.
27. Gameflip (Great for selling gaming related stuff!)
- Available for: Android – iOS
If you are a gamer and have a lot of used games gathering dust in the basement, this is for you!
Gameflip is a great site and app for buying and selling video games, in-game items, and gift cards.
So whether you have games you don’t play anymore, rare collectibles and sets, or digital content, using the Gameflip app, you can list them for sale quickly and easily.
Once your item sells, you get paid in your account, which you can withdraw into your bank.
27. Flyp
Update: It seems like they have changed direction. They no longer offer the original service. Instead the app is now a cross-listing and sharing tool “that helps resellers increase their online sales“. It is 100% free for the first 100 days. After that, there is a $9 monthly fee.
Flyp is an awesome app for selling clothes, shoes and accessories.
The major difference between this and other selling apps is that you don’t have to do any work!
The app connects you with their vetted Pro Sellers who will sell your stuff on your behalf for a commission.
So if you have a lot of stuff to sell but don’t have the time or patience to list them one by one, add pictures, descriptions, etc, give Flyp a try.
Updates
When I originally wrote this post, the below apps were still active. But since then, some have either gone out of business or have merged with other apps. We are keeping them in this section for archival reasons.
LetGo
- Update: OfferUp acquired Letgo in March 2020, so LetGo is basically OfferUp now!
LetGo is an app that allows you to sell anything from smartphones to shoes.
Similar to 5miles, LetGo is another location-specific app, which allows you to filter items based on distance from your location. This site does a great deal to make its members feel safe. You log in to LetGo via Facebook.
It will connect your profile to Facebook and your name and profile photo are imported. This step aids the app in confirming that you are who you say you are, and this makes you seem more trustworthy to other users. With the app you can communicate with other users and use the review system to rate buyers.
Dealo
- Update: Dealo is no longer available!
Combining elements of Craigslist, eBay, and Amazon, Dealo is one of the best apps for selling things online. You don’t need an account to start browsing items – but, you’ll need one if you want to sell things.
Dealo is a location specific app, so it will provide local listings. But, if you want to sell elsewhere, even worldwide, the app does have verified shipping as well. Payments on the site are processed via PayPal.
SocialSell
- Update: This app is no longer available!
With SocialSell, you can buy and sell new and used items locally. It doesn’t have a main website – instead, all listings are processed through Android and iOS apps.
You can communicate with buyers through the app, meaning you don’t have to give out your email address if you don’t want to.
It’s a relatively new app, so it might not be available yet in your area, but feedback for SocialSell, so far, has been positive.
Tradyo
- Update: Tradyo is no longer active!
Sell items to people in your neighborhood with Tradyo. Tradyo is a classified app, which allows you to post listings for free.
This app provides you with a selection of useful features, like instant chat, which makes selling your unwanted items easier.
Tips for Selling Stuff with Apps Successfully
Ok, now you know the best apps that you can use to sell your used stuff relatively fast and easy.
But selling your stuff successfully on apps goes beyond just listing them. You need to do a few things to stand out from hundreds of thousands of other listings, selling the same things you are.
Here are a few tips and tricks for using apps to declutter and make extra cash.
- Take high-quality pics: Clear, well-lit pictures make your items more appealing and help them stand out. Showcase the item from multiple angles and highlight any key features.
- Write an accurate description: Include important details like brand, size, condition, and any flaws. A detailed and honest description builds trust with potential buyers.
- Set the right price: Research similar items on the app to price your listing competitively. Don’t forget to consider shipping costs, if applicable.
- Respond as fast as you can: Be prompt in answering questions from buyers. Quick communication can seal the deal faster.
- Promote your listing (if you can): Use the app’s promotional features, such as boosted listings, to increase visibility and attract more buyers.
- Offer few payment options: Not everybody sues PayPal or Venmo. By accepting different forms of payment, you expand your pool of potential buyers instantly.
- Use the right app: Some apps work better for specific categories. For instance, ThredUp can be used for clothes or Swappa can be used for electronics.
Using these simple tips, you can increase your chances of selling your stuff faster and for the best price!
