Which Stores Accept PayPal In-Store?
Okay, so paying online with PayPal is a no-brainer. But what about when you’re actually standing in the checkout line at a store? Can you use it then?
Yep, you totally can at a growing number of places, but it works a little differently. You don’t swipe a card. Instead, it all happens through the PayPal app on your phone.
The first time I tried this at CVS, I wasn’t sure it would work, but it was surprisingly easy.

When you’re ready to pay, you just open the app and tap the “Scan/Pay” button to get a QR code. The cashier scanned the code on my phone screen, and that was it.
It was actually faster than waiting for a chip card to process.
Major Stores That Accept PayPal QR Codes In-Person:
- Walmart
- CVS
- Target
- Home Depot
- Macy’s
- Foot Locker
- Kohl’s
- Bed Bath & Beyond
How to Pay with PayPal in a Store
- Step 1: Before you get to the cashier, open the PayPal app on your phone.
- Step 2: On the app’s home screen, tap the main button, which often looks like a QR code icon and says “Scan / Pay.”
- Step 3: You’ll see a unique QR code on your screen. Show it to the cashier so they can scan it.
- Step 4: You’ll get an instant notification to confirm the purchase is complete. That’s it!
That’s it! You just paid for your things at your local store with PayPal!
How to Indirectly Use PayPal on Amazon
This is the number one question people have: Can you use PayPal on Amazon?
The direct answer is no.
Amazon has its own payment service (Amazon Pay) and doesn’t offer PayPal at checkout.
But don’t worry, there are a few clever workarounds if you really want to use your PayPal funds for an Amazon purchase.
Method 1: Use a PayPal Debit Card
This is the easiest and most direct way. If you have a PayPal Cash Card or PayPal Business Debit Mastercard, you can just add it to your Amazon account as a new payment method.
Since it works just like any other debit card, Amazon will accept it without any issues.
Method 2: Pay with Venmo
Here’s a weird but useful trick. Amazon now allows you to pay with Venmo. Since PayPal owns Venmo, you can fund your Venmo account with your PayPal balance.
When you check out on Amazon, just select “Pay with Venmo” and authorize the payment in your Venmo app.
Method 3: Buy Amazon Gift Cards
You can use your PayPal account to buy Amazon gift cards from other websites (like the gift card section on eBay or other online retailers).
Once you buy the gift card, you just apply the code to your Amazon account and use the balance to make your purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are there extra fees for using PayPal in stores?
Nope. As a buyer, you won’t pay any extra fees for using the PayPal QR code to pay in a store. The store pays a small transaction fee to PayPal, which is pretty much the same as the fee they pay when you use a regular credit card, so it doesn’t cost you anything extra.
How does a PayPal return work at a store like Target?
It’s actually very simple and works just like a normal return. You bring your item back to the store with the receipt. They process the return in their system, and the refund is sent back to your PayPal account automatically. From there, PayPal will send the money back to whatever you used for the payment (your PayPal balance, credit card, or bank account.). Just keep in mind that it might take a few business days for a credit card refund to show up on your statement.
Is it safe to use the PayPal QR code in a store?
Yes, it’s actually one of the safest ways you can pay. When you use the QR code, it creates a one-time token for the transaction. Your actual credit card number and financial details are never shown to or stored by the merchant. Because your information isn’t being shared, it’s incredibly secure. Plus, these purchases are still often covered by PayPal’s Purchase Protection.
Can I use PayPal at gas stations?
Yes, you can! Many of the big gas station chains like Shell and Chevron let you pay right from your car using the PayPal app or by linking your PayPal account to their own gas station app. When you pull up to the pump, you just use the app to select your pump number and authorize the payment. It’s way faster than using a card. I use it at my local QuikTrip gas station to pay for gas sometimes.
Can I use PayPal for groceries?
Yes, you can! It’s easiest to do when you’re ordering groceries online for pickup or delivery from places like Walmart or Target. But you can also use it in the store at any grocery shop that accepts the PayPal QR code at checkout. Just remember to have your app open and ready to scan.
Why don’t all stores accept PayPal?
It usually comes down to a few simple reasons. First, PayPal charges stores a small fee for every transaction, and some stores just don’t want to pay it. Second, some giant retailers (like Amazon) have their own payment systems they want you to use instead. And finally, some stores might have exclusive deals with other payment companies, like Apple Pay.
How do I find stores that accept PayPal near me?
This is a great little trick that’s built right into the PayPal app. Open the app and look for the “Deals” or “Offers” section. It will often use your phone’s location to show you a map of nearby stores and restaurants that not only accept PayPal, but might even be offering a special discount or cashback reward for using it!
Final Thoughts
So, next time you’re wondering if you can pay with PayPal, the answer is almost always yes. As you can see from this list (which I personally use and update) the number of stores that accept it is huge and growing all the time.
Whether you’re shopping online from your couch, using the QR code to pay in-person at the register, or splitting up a bigger purchase with Pay in 4, you’ve got tons of options.
It’s way more than just a button on a website; it’s a really flexible way to pay for just about anything.
Do you know of any other great stores that accept PayPal? Let me know in the comments below so I can add them to the list and help everyone out!
it good I like it so much 🤠
Netflix DOES NOT allow Paypal to be a payment option.
They actually do Leonard. You can see it on this page. However, there are a few countries where PayPal isn’t available. So if you don’t see PayPal as a payment option in your Netflix account, it could be because of that.
Groupon does not accept PayPal.
Thank you for the update, Florencia. Yes, it seems like even though on some parts of their website they show PayPal as a payment option, when you actually try to use it, it won’t work. I have updated the post.
So I’m confused on how a PayPal checkout would go in a store? Would I wave my phone over the credit card scanner, or would I pull up my QR screen and they would scan it with a gun?
Hey Brian,
For PayPal in stores, it usually works one of two ways:
You can open the PayPal app, pull up your QR code, and the cashier scans it with their scanner.
Or, some stores let you pay by tapping your phone if you’ve linked your PayPal account to a digital wallet like Apple Pay or Google Pay.
So, waving your phone like a credit card works only if you set up PayPal with Apple Pay or Google Pay. Otherwise, showing the QR code for scanning is the common way.
Hope that helps clear it up!
