Are you interested in making money while grocery shopping?
The idea may have seemed silly a decade ago but today it’s actually quite a popular concept. In this article, we will be doing a ReceiptPal review, which is an app that lets you get money just for scanning your grocery receipts.
Table of Contents
What is ReceiptPal?
You may have heard of receipt scanning apps before. There are so many of them including iBotta (review) and Fetch Rewards (review).
If you haven’t heard of such apps, here is a general idea: You shop for whatever items you need for the week, then when you are done you use the app to scan the receipt. If there’s a possible rebate out there, you’ll be given cashback.
ReceiptPal is a lot like this, but there are some added bonuses you don’t normally see in an app like this. For one thing, they also do sweepstakes and games that will earn you extra points. We’ll discuss these later on in the article.
You can also connect it with your Amazon account to earn cashback from your orders there. Plus, all of your receipts are stored in the app. This allows you to keep track of your spending.

How Do I Get Started?
Here is our simple step by step guide for joining.
Step 1: Download the app from either the Apple App Store or Google Play, depending on what device you use.
Step 2: Make an account and link it to your PayPal account. This usually only takes a few minutes to do.
Step 3: Go shopping and scan your receipt from the grocery store.
Step 4: Profit! You’ll get your points added to your account plus there’s a random chance you’ll earn more points from and extra game when you are done!
How Do I Earn Points?
We’ve already covered the receipt scanning portion of this app, but there are some other things to keep in mind.
After you earn a certain amount of points in a week (which is called filling a point card in the app) you’ll be unable to redeem more until reset day on Sunday. However, there is still a good reason to scan your receipts anyway.
As mentioned before, there are other ways to earn points and rewards from this app besides scanning your receipt. Every 100 points and every validated receipt earns you one entry into their Sweepstakes program. Once you fill your point cards, every submitted receipt gets you double entries.
There are three weekly sweepstakes. The times you can enter for each one are:
- Sunday 12 AM to Monday 11:59 PM
- Tuesday 12 AM to Wednesday 11:59 PM
- Thursday 12 AM to Saturday 11:59 PM
Another reason to keep scanning is the bonus games. Every four receipts you scan, you earn a bonus game that will let you win either points or sweepstakes entries. You can play a maximum of 5 games a week.

So, as you can see, there are actually a lot of ways you can earn points through this app.
How much can I earn?
This, of course, depends on how much you shop. Every four receipts are worth 100 points. Every 500 points is worth $1.25.
In order to redeem something like an Amazon gift card for $5, you’ll need 2000 points. This is about 100 receipts.
What we can tell from this information is that this is quite a slow earning app. However, it does only take a few seconds to scan a receipt so it at least doesn’t take a lot of effort to do.
How to Redeem ReceiptPal Points?
Here’s how you can redeem your points for prices:
- Step 1: Tap the “Rewards” button on the homepage of the app.
- Step 2: Tap on the Reward you like to redeem your points for.
- Step 3: Tap Redeem.
Once you confirm your selection on the next step, the company will send you an email with your reward code (like a digital Amazon gift card code.
What kind of receipts does ReceiptPal accept?
There are many you can submit. Generally, they accept ones from:
- Convenience stores
- Travel and entertainment stores
- Resturants
- Grocery stores
- Clothing stores
- Sporting goods stores
- Electronic stores
- Gas stations
- Care dealerships
- Online retailers
Some rules for your receipts are:
- Must include the store name, purchase date, the total amount spent, and either the phone number or zip code of the store
- Must be in English
- Must be with U.S. dollars
- Must be from retailers located in the U.S., Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, or Guam
- Must be a clear, easy to read photo
One thing to note, it takes less than 24 hours to validate a receipt. For online shopping ones, it can take about 72 hours.
What devices can I use with ReceiptPal?
The app works for both Apple and Android phones. However, it won’t work on an iPad or any other type of tablet. You might also want to keep in mind that phones with older operating systems may experience lag while using the app.
ReceiptPal Customer Reviews
An app can claim to do anything, but the real question is if it follows through. To find that out, we’ve looked into what actual users of the app are saying.
“Just did my first week’s worth of receipts into ReceiptPal. Filled up all the cards for a total of 500 points. Basically, a $1.25 a week. Not quite worth it for me. I find the conga line of receipts a little tedious to take pics of. If my e-receipts fill up a portion of the cards each week, this would be much more doable,” said one Reddit user.
“It is legit. Slow but it takes just about every receipt I throw at it. Good reliable slow earner,” said another Reddit user.
Something to also keep in mind is the app rating. Out of over eleven thousand reviews on the Apple App store, the app is rated 4.7 stars out of 5. According to the Google Play store, its got a 4-star rating from over nine thousand reviews.
While searching through their reviews, some common complaints I found were:
- The app runs slow or crashes while taking a photo of a receipt
- Customer services takes a long time to respond
- The app doesn’t let you redeem as many points as it should
Additionally, some of the commonly listed pros were:
- The app doesn’t take long to use
- It’s a nice way to earn a bit of side cash
Better Business Bureau Rating
Before getting the app, you might want to know more about the company that owns it. The app is owned by The NPD Group, which is a market research company.
According to the Better Business Bureau, the company has been accredited with them since 1972. They have been in business for 66 years.
They are rated as A+ by the BBB. This does not take into consideration their reviews but instead the way the business has handled complaints. There have been 7 complaints closed in the last three years. Each complaint has been responded too by the company in one way or another.
It should be noted that the company does have a one-star rating from the customer reviews. However, this is because there is only one single review. To judge what customers actually think, we will show you their ratings from other sites in a bit.
If you’d like to see more of their profile and read their closed complaints, you can visit the Better Business Bureau here.
Final Thoughts
There are a lot of receipt scanning apps out there, so is this one really worth using?
In my opinion, yes. It’s easy to use and doesn’t take much effort, which is exactly what I look for from these kinds of apps.
I wouldn’t go so far to say that it’s better than apps like Ibotta or ReceiptHog, but it does grant you a bit of extra money. And to wrap up this ReceiptPal review, I’d also suggest that if you use this app in addition to other receipt scanning apps, like ReceiptHog, you could actually stack your rewards for the same shopping trip!

Hello, I just wanted to comment here that I’m not sure about how legit receipt pal may have been in previous times, but in my experience they turned out to be a scam! I have nearly 50,000 points in my account which took like 4 years or so to work my way up to-and I recently tried to redeem only 25000 of them for 100$ Amazon gift card and it took my points and I got nothing – not a card, not info ABOUT a card. Not a verification of redeemed points no message at all.. like it never even happened, the only difference is that now I have half the points I had just 2 days ago. Of course I reached out to customer service, which used to be quite good- but now only an automated, generic reply that helps me NONE! I’LL update this if they end up fixing this but so far it has been a scam

Sorry to hear about your experience, Ashley. Yeah, that’s not good. Did you check your email (and spam folder) to see if they sent you the digital gift certificate code?
They have been around for a while and they are indeed legit, but like all companies, even the very best ones, they do fail here and there, especially when it comes to customer service. I hope your issue gets resolved.
And yes, please do update us if things change. Good luck, Ashley.
