If you’re like most people, you probably visit the store to grocery shop at least once or twice per week.
For some people, a trip to the grocery store is an almost daily post-work activity – whether it’s to run in for that carton of milk or loaf of bread you forgot to pick up last time you were there.
And we spend quite a bit of money when it comes to our food.
According to Progressive Grocer, Americans spent over $638 billion in 2014 in supermarkets across the country.
But, did you know that you could actually get paid for the time you spend shopping?

A company called Shipt pays people to shop.
What will I learn?
What is Shipt?
Shipt is an on-demand grocery delivery service.
It’s a lot like the on-demand delivery service from Amazon.com, but this one is focused on only groceries.
It’s used by people that either don’t have the time to shop, or simply don’t want to do their own shopping.
And, with 79 percent of people turning to their mobile phone to help them shop, Shipt is pretty popular.
Shipt has been featured by major media outlets and publications, including Forbes, US News & World Report, Yahoo, TechCrunch, FastCompany, and WSJ.
How it works
Members of Shipt use the mobile app to choose the groceries they want, select their preferred delivery option and checkout.
So, they can buy want they want without even having to leave the house.
Shipt essentially makes grocery shopping quicker, easier, and more convenient.
Once the customer has placed their order, a shopper will go and purchase the products for them. Then, the shopper delivers the order to the customer.

So, Shipt is always looking for reliable people to become shoppers – and that could be you!
What does a Shipt shopper do?
As a Shipt shopper, you get paid to shop!
Once you accept an order, you receive a grocery list, along with an estimated shipping time, and a recommended store based on the customer’s location.
Then, you’ll need to select the customer’s groceries and deliver them within a specified, delivery window
How much do you get paid?
With Shipt, you can make a pretty great income if you want to.
For each order, you’ll earn a base rate of $5.
But, you also get 7.5% of the order total.
And, most orders tend to be worth more than $35, as this is the amount that customers need to spend to qualify for free delivery.
So, for example, if the customer orders $40 worth of groceries, then you’ll get the base payment of $5, plus 7.5% of the order total, which is $3. So, you’d make $8 in total.
Shipt shoppers claim to make an average of $15 to $25 per hour.
Completing multiple orders in one shopping trip can really boost your earnings.
And, let’s face it, if you’re already at the grocery store filling one order, then you may as well try to complete a couple more. Just make sure that you keep each order separate!
Also, you can earn a pretty great amount of cash just from tips. So, the more orders you fill, the more tips you’ll get.
Benefits of being a Shipt shopper
There are a few benefits (besides the obvious one) when it comes to getting paid to shop for people.
1. Make as much or as little cash as you want
As a Shipt Shopper, you can make as little or as much cash as you want.
You get order requests through the app, which you can accept or deny – meaning you can take on as many or as few orders as you want.
2. Set your own schedule
Unlike a traditional 9 to 5 or even part time job, you aren’t constricted by a schedule as a Shopper.
Shipt offers its services from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days per week, which gives you a big window to pick up deliveries.
So, if you’re only available to pick up shopping after 5 p.m., for example, then you can!
Whether you’re a college student, a stay-at-home mom, or a 9 to 5 office worker, you can make money from Shipt, as it gives you a lot of flexibility.
3. You can use its services for free
All Shipt shoppers get a free membership, which is worth $14/month or $99/year.
So, if you just can’t get to the grocery store one day, or you’re just feeling a bit lazy that day, you can get someone else to select and deliver your groceries for you for free.
Considerations
Here are a few things to keep in mind as a shopper.
1. The cost of gas
The company doesn’t reimburse you for your gas, or any other car related expenses.
So, always look at the customer’s location when selecting orders to fill.
If it’s a far drive, and it’s going to cost you more in gas than you’ll earn, then the order isn’t worth it.
2. The size of the order
While the larger orders earn you more money, as you get 7.5% of the order total, sometimes filling a few smaller orders can net you more cash.
This is due to tips.
Shipt shoppers, generally, get tips for each order they fill.
So if you fill three orders, then that’s three tips, rather than one.
Always keep potential tips in mind when selecting orders.
3. The items in the order
While you do get to see the total price of an order before you choose whether or not to accept it, you don’t get to see what’s on the customer’s shopping list.
But, if there’s an item that just isn’t available at the store, then you can contact the customer through the app itself, and offer them alternatives.

Great Post!
Thank you, Al. Are you thinking about applying for the job?
It’s NOT in Cleveland yet…
You are correct, Anna. They are however in Columbus. I don’t think it will be too long before they open up shop in Cleveland.
Hi I had a question. I applied for Shipment but just missed one question by mistake. I am a fast shopper and really know the grocery stores here in Houston. I tried reapplying but they said i could not apply again.
Is there any way for me to get hired on? I really love the type of job and would be an asset. Please text or call me at (number removed for privacy and security reasons.)
Thank you,
James C.
Houston, Texas
James, sorry they didn’t approve your application. I mean, you could always, wait a few weeks and apply again.
In the mean time, there are other options as well. Another company you can try is InstaCart. They also do grocery delivery.
Also if you like that kind of work, you’d be happy to know that most grocery stores are also starting to provide delivery services. Here in Midwest, for example, Schnucks and Dierbergs are offering deliveries. Stop by your local grocery stores and see if they need delivery people. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
can we please get in maryland area
Mike, you’ll have to contact the Shipt directly and ask them about that.
Fabulous idea. I’ve been retired from the grocery business for year now, and I am looking for a bit of quick cash. I worked for the navy commissary and am experienced in all departments. I may look into doing this
