One of the biggest expenses for most families is groceries.
Food is a consistent expense that obviously can’t be avoided.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average American family spent $6,759 per year on groceries in 2014. Furthermore, on average, we seem to make 1.5 trips to the grocery store every week, according to the FMI (Food Marketing Institute).
Obviously, you can budget and make cutbacks – but only to a certain extent. If you cut down too much, you’ll end up sacrificing your own quality of life and your happiness.
Fortunately, there are many apps out there that can help you save money on food, specifically what you buy from your local grocery store(s), so you don’t have to make drastic cutbacks.

1. Outofmilk.com
One of the reasons why families spend more than they need to on groceries is because they buy the same item twice.
For example, you purchase a loaf of bread on the way home, and then your spouse buys one too.
You can avoid buying stuff you don’t need by using outofmilk.com.
This app allows you to create your own grocery lists and share them with others. This means that everyone in the family knows what’s needed, and doesn’t purchase the same item twice.
Out of Milk is the #1 most used Android shopping list app.

3. iBotta
iBotta is a cashback app. It is an excellent tool for saving money on groceries.
With the app, you get cash back on the stuff you’d buy anyway.
It’s easy to use too. All you need to do is download the app, which is compatible with both iOS and Android devices. Then, search for the deals that you’re interested in and unlock them.
You unlock deals by completing simple tasks, like filling out surveys and watching videos.
Then, once you’ve unlocked the deal, you can buy the products you’ve unlocked at any eligible store.
Once you’ve made your purchases, simply scan your product barcodes and then submit a photo of your receipt. The app will then credit your iBotta account within 48 hours.
You can request a withdrawal of your funds, once your account reaches $5. The money is transferred to your PayPal account.
Another way that you can use this app to save money, without having to scan your receipt is through loyalty programs. Whether it’s Walmart or Target, many people have loyalty cards for the places they frequently shop at.
Unfortunately, it’s easy to forget your loyalty card, and you miss out on rewards and potential savings.
If you link a loyalty account with iBotta, however, you can gain rewards and get cashback, even if you forget your loyalty card. Simply choose one of the app’s Preferred Partners, and connect either your loyalty card or phone number.
Then, as above, complete simple tasks to unlock the cashback rewards you want. Next, use your loyalty card or phone number when you get to the checkout. Then, the app automatically gives you cash-back.

7. SnipSnap
This is an app made for those who love couponing, especially extreme couponers.
This app does something that not many other apps can do – it turns your physical coupons into digital ones that you can use at the checkout.
No more carrying around a bunch of coupons. No more getting to the checkout and realizing “oh shoot, I forgot the coupons.”
All you have to do is take a picture of your coupon. The app the converts it into a scannable barcode that you can scan at the checkout counter, like any other barcode on a physical coupon.
There is also another great feature – as soon as you enter a grocery store that you have coupons for, the app alerts you about the coupons that are bout to expire soon.
I think this is one of the best grocery money saving apps out there. I don’t know why it’s free!

Bonus: 2 Sites for Saving More on Groceries
There are tons of couponing, recipes, and food blogs out there that can help you save money on food. But there are two sites that I particularly like and find very helpful.
Check ’em out.
1. Supercook
A lot of people go shopping for food to make dinner, rather than using what they already have in to make a meal. Most people don’t realize that they probably have the ingredients to make a great meal at home – so a trip to the grocery store is a waste of money.
A great tool for creating meals with what you have at home is Supercook.
This website is a search engine that allows you to search by the ingredients that you have at home. Simply enter the ingredients you have at home, and you’ll be presented with recipes containing them.
Alternately, if you really don’t have that much at home, so you do need to visit the grocery store, but you want to stay on budget, then input the ingredients you can afford to buy into Supercook. Then, you will get a list of recipes based on your affordable ingredients.
They are currently working on releasing their app as well. You can visit http://app.supercook.com/i to subscribe so you can get notified when the app is released.
2. 5 Dollar Dinners
If you’re on a budget and are looking to feed your family for less, then check out 5 Dollar Dinners.
With this website, you can find an extensive collection of recipes that cost less than $5 to make.
And, dinner recipes are not all you’ll find at 5 Dollar Dinners, despite the name. On the site, there are plenty of recipes for breakfast, lunch, desserts and snacks.
It’s an excellent resource for anyone looking to reduce their grocery bill.
