Imagine taking pictures of your receipts and getting paid for it using an app!
Yes, grocery receipt cashback apps are real!
There are few things in the world that are as universal as grocery shopping. It’s an unavoidable part of daily life – you can’t go without food, and you can’t live on takeout!
And when it comes to saving money, saving on groceries is one of the first things people try to tackle.
What if I told you that you can get paid for grocery shopping by using an app that rewards you for buying the same groceries you were going to buy anyway?
It is sort of like getting cashback for groceries.

How the Snap app works
This is available on both Android and iOS, to customers in the US or Canada.
There are really only 3 steps to the process:
- Download the Snap app by visiting snap.groupon.com and clicking on the app link for your device (Android and iOS)
- Snap a photo of your receipt after purchasing the indicated items.
- Cash out after you earn $20 in rewards.
Aside from all that, there is no catch!
Now, you may be wary about the idea of payout minimum.
Why should you have to wait to be rewarded for your participation?
It sounds inconvenient, but it will really happen quite quickly.
Depending on your location, there are usually between 35-40 items sponsored under Snap by Groupon (by the way, be sure to read our in-dept review of Groupon to learn a few hacks that will take your savings to the next level!). That’s a pretty wide amount of items, meaning you can get multiple per trip to the store.
Details
For a bit more in-depth look at the Snap reward system, I’ll briefly explain how it works.
Advertisements
Generally, you’ll get a flat $1 back on something – say, $1 back on a purchase of milk, or a purchase of bread.
But you also get rewards for a brand-specific item, like “Blue Bonnet” or “Tide”.
The product categories can get pretty varied, which enables you to get more rewards for your regular shopping.
Some Snap offers are available exclusively for Amazon orders.
This is great if you’re someone who likes to do a lot of shopping or perhaps who doesn’t have a lot of offers available for the area you live in.
This can be a bit of a pain in the back if you don’t have Amazon prime though since those shipping costs can really eat into your potential earnings.
The only downside
There is one aspect of the service which I would list as a major downside, though: you don’t get the rewards until you send a picture of your receipt through the app.
However, some offers are time-sensitive.
This creates a situation where you run the risk of missing out on your reward if you delay sending your receipt by a day or even a few hours.
Not an issue if you immediately send off your receipts but a bit of an annoying hassle to have in the process.
Can I use coupons?
Groupon doesn’t seem to mind if you use coupons on the products that you’re already purchasing.
So if you like, you can double-down on your savings by using coupons (or better yet, using one of these coupon apps to save even more) and then redeeming the offers on Snap.
By doing this you can come closer to profiting off the endeavor – or, at least, getting your products for free.
You may be familiar with similar kinds of apps that have tasks to do inside the grocery store, but this one’s a bit more straightforward.
Getting paid
They’ll pay you by check, which is pretty nice since you can skirt the hassle of PayPal transfers that most services use.
Keep in mind that if you’re going to stop using the service, it’s recommended to clear out your earnings first.
12 Months of inactivity will incur a deduction from your balance, which will likely clear out any earnings that you leave unused.
More ways to earn
They do also offer a referral system. You’ll earn $1 for every friend you get to participate in the program.
It’s not a huge gain, but pretty great if you can get your link onto Facebook or somewhere similar.
20 Friends signing up is enough to get you to your payout minimum!
Not limited to smartphones
On a final note, you don’t necessarily have to use a smartphone to take advantage of the Snap program.
They’ll let you download it onto most tablets or even by using the service through your browser (though this is admittedly more difficult).
It’s a fairly inclusive program, in that way.
Bottom line
Using Snap should be a no brainer.
If you’re going to grocery shop anyway, you may as well use this app to earn some rewards by scanning your grocery receipts.
