How to Get a Mattress for Free with Free Trials
We’re going to start with places where you can get a new mattress for free.
The places below are brands that sell mattresses, and often beds and bedding too, which offer a free mattress trial.
With these trials, you can try a mattress for free for a certain time period.
Then you simply give the mattress back at the end of the trial period.
How do free mattress trials work?
Each company has its own policies and processes in place for mattress trials.
So, you’ll need to check with the specific company that you get your mattress from to get the full details of how its trials work.
With these trials, you get a mattress for free, for a certain time period.
This time frame varies from company to company, but it can be anywhere from 90 to 1000 days, with around 100 days being the most common duration for a trial period.
Then you can return the mattress and get your payment refunded.
The trial period for the mattress usually begins once it’s been delivered, rather than on the purchase date.

Getting a free mattress using mattress trials
So hypothetically, you could get a mattress from one company, use it for 100 days, return it and then do the same with a second company, a third company, and so on.

Also, you will need to pay for the mattress initially, but then you’ll get a refund for it, so it turns out to be free!
In many cases, the company will collect the mattress for you. Some will do this for free, and others will charge you, and some companies may put you in charge of returns.
Some make you pay a restocking fee, but many in our list don’t.
Many companies will pick up the mattress for you for free and refund you 100% of what you paid.
A lot of these mattress companies will either recycle these returned mattresses or donate them to charity.

How to get a Used Mattress for Free
Above, we let you know how you could try new mattresses for free from companies.
This works out great for many people.
But, it’s not suited to others:
- If you don’t have the money to pay for the mattress upfront and wait until you get a refund, then free mattress trials aren’t an option for you.
- With trials you have to continually order new mattresses, and some people don’t want to have to do that. They’d rather just get a mattress that they can keep for years.
Fortunately, there are plenty of other things that you can do to get a mattress for free.
Most of the tips below are ways to get a used mattress.
Some people buy a new mattress and then want to get rid of their old one, and they’re often willing to give it away for free.
It’s not uncommon to find very gently used mattresses – after all, some people change their mattress more than the regular recommended average, and many people simply find that a mattress just doesn’t suit them, so they want to try out another one.
Whatever the case, there are plenty of people out there who’re looking to donate their used mattress; you just need to know where to look!
Below, we list places where you can get your hands on a donated mattress.
Also, if you are desperately in need of a mattress, for example, if you’ve recently lost your home in a fire or a natural disaster, or are transitioning out of homelessness, then you may be able to get assistance from a non-profit organization or charity or even places that offer free mattress for low income families.
26. Browse your local Craigslist page
Take a look at the Craigslist page for your city or nearest city.
Craigslist isn’t just a place for people to sell stuff.
People also give away items they no longer want on there as well.
So, visit the main page for your city. Then, type in the term “free mattress” in the search bar on the left side of the screen.
You’ll see a few drop down options. Select the “free mattress in for sale” option.
Once you click that, you’ll see plenty of results for free mattresses in your area.
27. Check out Reddit
Reddit is a great place to look for free stuff, as it has many sections dedicated to freebies.
Check out these two sub-Reddits:
You may be able to find a free mattress in these sections.
Make sure you check out our post on Reddit freebies here to find more free stuff.
28. Freecycle

29. Ask at Hotels and Apartment Complexes
Stop by any nice local hotels in your area and ask if they have any mattresses they’re getting rid of. Even if they don’t have one available right now, let them know that you’re looking for one.
Since many hotels remodel, or just like to keep their mattresses looking brand new, they replace their old mattresses.
The same is true for apartment complexes. So ask the manager of the apartment complex, landlord or rental property manager if any tenants have left behind a mattress or if they plan to replace their mattresses and want to get rid of the old ones.
It’s likely that they will be happy for you to take care of removing the mattress for them. You’ll be doing them a favor.
30. Check your local Paper
The local newspaper sometimes features a “Free” or “Give-Away” category on the classifieds section. These categories can be a good place to find a free mattress.
You can also check the household items category.
31. Visit Yard Sales
For those wondering, “where can I get a free mattress near me?”, your next door neighbor may be giving one away for free in their next yard sale!
Visit yard sales in your area and you may be able to get a mattress for free. Just make sure that you visit near the end of the yard sale.
At the end of the day, most sellers are tired and generally just want to get rid of their stuff. If a mattress hasn’t sold, just ask the seller if they’d be willing to give it to you at no cost. If you’re willing to haul it away for them, they’ll probably be glad to offload it.
32. Browse Free Stuff groups on Facebook
Check out the ALL free stuff group on Facebook. The group helps people to find free stuff.
So you may be able to find a free mattress on there. Also, a quick search for free stuff groups in your area can also generate a lot of results.
33. Visit local Thrift Stores
Some thrift stores don’t sell large items like mattresses, because they take up a lot of room!
This doesn’t mean that well-meaning people don’t donate them though.
So if you offer to haul the mattress away for free for the store, then they may give it to you at no cost.
It’s definitely worth calling a few local thrift stores to enquire.
34. Check with Furniture Stores
Furniture stores will often remove old mattresses from customer’s homes when they deliver new ones.
So it can be a good idea to ask a furniture store about one of these old mattresses. Just visit local stores that sell furniture, tell them you’re looking for a free mattress, and they may have one available that they’ll give to you at no cost.
35. Contact the Red Cross
If you need a mattress because you have been the victim of a fire or a natural disaster, then contact your local Red Cross. They can help you to replace lost or damaged used furniture, including your mattress.
- Contact Red Cross here.
36. Contact Furniture Banks
Contact furniture banks in your area if you are really struggling.
These banks help those in need, such as those who are:
- Moving out of homelessness.
- Moving from transitional housing.
- Living with HIV/AIDS.
- Victims of natural disaster or fire.
- Recently unemployed.
- Victims of domestic violence who are relocating.
- Foster children who are aging out.
- On a low income
These furniture banks may be able to get you a free mattress.
Search for your city or state, followed by the words “furniture bank” to find a furniture bank near you.
Another way to find banks nearby is the on the Furniture Bank Association of North America website.
- Visit this page of the website to find your nearest furniture bank.
37. Visit College areas during Move-Out season
When it’s moving season at college, you can often find furniture, including mattresses that have just been abandoned by the side of the road.
Since students vacate their dorms and apartments, often they either don’t have anywhere to store their stuff to move it or are unable to move it, so they just leave it. A quick drive around college towns can yield a free mattress.
Bonus: Ask!
If you are really in a bad financial situation and desperately need a new mattress, you can contact one of these companies and ask for a free bed or mattress.
Companies are made of people. And in general, people are nice and helpful. If you can prove you are in need of help, they may actually send you one for free.
All it takes a phone call or email which you can find on their website. You have nothing to lose by simply asking.
How to Get a Free Mattress to Review
Reviewing products to get free stuff is another way you can possibly get a free mattress.
Why would companies giveaway free product for you to review?
Because if you have a big enough following and are influential, many of your followers will potentially buy their next mattress from the said company.
Unfortunately, this doesn’t work for everyone.
It only works if you have a website or a big enough following on social media that the mattress companies can see the benefit in giving you one for free to review. Nonetheless, even if you have a small number of followers, it won’t hurt to ask. It only takes a few minutes and all you have to do is send an email.
Beware of Bed Bugs & Free Used Mattresses
If you do get a used mattress, make sure that it’s in good condition first.
Used mattresses can contain bedbugs, mold or mildew.
Here are the signs of bedbugs to look out for:
- Dark spots, which are around the size of a pin-head. These can be bedbug excrement.
- Small husks. These are the eggs or eggshells of bedbugs. These husks are about 1 mm in size.
- Small spots of rust or red color on the top of the mattress. This can be a sign that bedbugs have been crushed on the mattress.
- Bugs around the mattress tag, piping and seams.
If you suspect that a mattress has bedbugs, then don’t accept it.
Mold and mildew, however, can be tackled!
Mold or mildew appears as grey or black marks, such as splotches or streaks.
It can be cleaned from the mattress using one part rubbing alcohol and one part warm water.
Once you’ve cleaned the mattress, you’ll need to allow it to dry outside in the sunlight. Drying the mattress in the sunlight also helps to remove any odors from the mattress.
If you don’t want to put the mattress outside to dry, then use fans to dry it instead.
Closing thoughts
There are so many places where you can get a mattress at no cost.
So if you’ve been wondering how to get a free mattress, give one of these places a try.
