Sadly, that idea is partly true. There are scams out there. And deceptive marketing practices used by companies like the Publishers Clearing House to promote their infamous sweepstakes doesn’t help the whole “sweepstakes are just scams” narrative either.

Are Sweepstakes Real & Can You Really Win Money?

One of the reasons a lot of people dismiss sweepstakes in general is that they think most sweepstakes are scams and that nobody actually wins anything.

But that simply isn’t the case!

Sure, there are scams out there. In fact, one of the top money scams does involve sweepstakes/contests and winning money. If you ever received an email telling you you just won $5,000 or $5 million via a contest entry (that you don’t even remember entering in one!), you know what I am talking about (and hopefully you recognized it as a scam that it is). But in order to get paid, you have to either pay them a fee or give them your bank account info (checking or savings) so they can deposit the money to your bank. Obviously, it’s a scam and you lose money.

So it is good to keep an eye open and look for signs of a scam. For example, legitimate sweepstakes never ask you to pay a fee,  give ’em your bank account info, or cash a check they send you and wire part of that money back to them. I’d highly recommend you read the FTC’s Prize Scams post on Federal Trade Commission Consumer Information official website. It’ll help you spot and report such scams easily and quickly.

That said, there are a lot of legitimate and real contests and sweepstakes held by companies that you can enter to win money or prizes.

Why would companies give away free money?

It’s a form of advertising for them. It generates buzz, gets people involved and interested in their brand and creates potential new lifelong customers. In fact, according to some studies, holding contests yield better results for companies while being significantly less expensive than other forms of advertising like TV and Radio ads.

The trick is knowing how to find them. And for that, you don’t have to look too far since we just gave you a big list of them.

Also keep in mind that while all these sweepstakes are open at the time of writing this post, by the time you read it, some may have expired. And if a company had a contest that has already expired, you can be sure that they’ll have more contests later on. To find current sweepstakes from your favorite brands, just search on Google using the brand’s name followed by the keyword “sweepstakes” or “contest“.

Google will then display all the relevant results. From there click on the links that interest you and follow the guidelines.
