There are so many work from home money-making opportunities, it can be hard to figure out which ones are worthwhile and which are simply people or companies who may scam you. So when I found out that the megalith, Amazon, was looking for people, I was naturally very interested.
Amazon’s Customer Service Associate
Amazon employ thousands of CSA’s, or Customer Service Associates, and the great news is that they are open to employing CSA’s to work from home.
So even if you do not live close to one of their customer service centers, you may still be eligible to work for Amazon, assisting customers who call in.
It’s called working for Amazon’s VCC, which stands for Virtual Contact Center.
What Do You Have to Do?
If you’re taken on as a work-at-home CSA, you start with 3 to 4 weeks of paid training. Subject to completing this satisfactorily, you can work full or part-time from your house.

To be considered, you have to live in one of the designated states:
- North Carolina
- West Virginia
You’re in constant communication with customers or potential customers, on the phone, email, or through chat windows.
Who Can Apply?
Amazon has a reputation to maintain, so it is demanding of the applicants.
In fact, the goal of Amazon Contact Centers is “to deliver the best possible support experience to our customers”.
They like the staff to think like owners, showing initiative and even recommending improvements to the systems when they can.
It almost goes without saying that you need basic typing, phone, and computer skills for this position. You must know your way around the Internet, and use email and Instant Messenger. They also request that you have a high school diploma or equivalent.
Amazon asks for at least a year’s experience dealing with the public, and wants to know that you have a distraction free environment.
This is not one of those jobs for a stay at home moms who at any moment may have to break off to look after a toddler. You need a dedicated space, and preferably a room where you can shut the door, if needed, to prevent family interruptions.
You don’t need the latest computers, as they are happy to work with Windows 7 or 8, with a 64 bit operating system.
But they require that you have a separate landline phone, dedicated to your work, and wired high-speed Internet rated at 5MB/second or better.
Internet from your phone company may meet this standard, but DSL would be better.
You’re not allowed to use a Wi-Fi connection, so you will have to wire from your modem to your working location.
Don’t forget that you can probably claim any additional wiring, as well as the second phone line, as legitimate business expenses when you come to fill in your tax forms.
How Much Does Amazon Pay Its Customer Service Associate?
Pay starts at $10 – $11 per hour, and you can get seasonal bonuses and bonuses for referrals.
Given the nature of the job, it’s not surprising to hear that you are expected to be available to work on holidays and weekends.
As mentioned above, you don’t work on your own for the first three to four weeks, as there is a period of training.
They pay you for the training period.

The convenience of being able to work from home for one of the largest companies around ranks high on my list of desirable features, though it is up to you and your personal situation whether you mind the inconvenience of being available for holiday and weekend work.
