Spare5 then passes your input along to companies that use it to improve their algorithms and programs. By using Spare5, you’re helping to usher in the next generation of image recognition or auto-captioning software!
Some of the companies you’ll be helping are:
- Microsoft
- Gettyimages
- IBM
How Do I Join?
To join, sign up at their site here. You’ll be asked to fill out a brief welcome survey and watch their welcome video.
After that, you can check your task list to take tutorials and qualifiers. Learning new skills unlocks new tasks for you to do!
Then the app chooses tasks for you! The more you use the app, the more tasks you’ll get.
How Does Spare5 Pay?
You’re probably also wondering how much you can make from the app. Each task pays anywhere between $0.01 to $0.20. These tasks take very little time to complete, sometimes only a few seconds.
In a perfect world where there would be unlimited tasks, this could add up to making more than minimum wage per hour! Unfortunately, available tasks tend to be quite limited and you’ll probably only see new ones added every few days.
So, keeping all of this in mind, you’re likely to only make a few dollars every week.
After you finish your tasks, Spare5 will review them, then send you a payout the following Friday. Spare5 pays out to your PayPal account, so you’ll have to connect it in order to get paid. In order to cash out, you have to meet their $1 minimum.
User Reviews
Companies can make all the claims they want, but at the end of the day, what matters most is what users report that they experience. Here’s what people had to say about Spare5.

“I’ve been using it for about two months. I’ve made a couple of master tasks, I prefer to take the photos. I’ve made $13 so far, I get annoyed with the bounding box tasks or the $.1/ tasks. Good passive money,” said one Reddit reviewer.
“The highest I made in one week was $6. I’ve been using this site for one month now. I got only two days with web tasks and with web tasks you can make money really quick. They say January is the worst month for sites like spare5,” said another Reddit user.
“On my second day of registering I’ve made 90 cents on that website, after that, I never saw a task to be made,” said a Reddit user.
From all the reviews I’ve read, the main points I saw people make about this app are:
- Each task takes very little time to complete
- There aren’t a lot of tasks available anymore
- You’re likely to only make around one dollar every few days
- The site used to pay a lot more but went downhill
Pros and Cons
Sometimes when deciding to join a site like this, it helps to make a pros and cons list. Here are all the reasons I found that you may want, or may not want, to join.
Benefits of Spare5 are:
- You make decent money for something that takes little time
- They have a referral program which caps at $20
- Actual cash payout instead of gift cards
- Not a scam — they have always paid their users
Downsides of the site:
- There aren’t many tasks available every day
- People in the US are more likely to qualify than other users
- It can take a long time to earn as little as $3 due to lack of available work
So is Spare5 Worth It?
Unfortunately, due to the obvious signs that the site is losing available tasks to users, I don’t think I can recommend using this one.
It’s a shame because earning money for small tasks like this is a lot more engaging than taking surveys all the time. You’d probably make more money off something like InboxDollars than this site.
