How to Make 6-Figures with Your Own Business & Side Hustles
Is a 9-to-5 job really the only way to make $100k plus a year?
Definitely not.
You can make money without a job, a traditional job!
There are plenty of side gigs and business ideas that can land you a 6-figure salary – or much more than that in many cases.
In this section, I just wanted to cover some of the more, “outside of the box” methods for making 6 figures.
There are a few reasons why the ideas below can work well for so many people:
A degree isn’t required
This can be one of those contentious subjects but having a degree really isn’t a requirement for success or for making a lot of money. Plenty of people have made a 6 figure income, or even a 7 or 8 figure income without a degree.
They’re accessible
For many of the ideas below, you don’t need much, if any cash, to get started, and the amount of money you do need is certainly far less than you’d spend on a degree.
The earning potential can be greater
The thing with careers like air traffic controller or CPA is that most of the time, your income has a ceiling, but with the ideas below, the sky’s the limit.
Diversification is easier
Okay, so you’ll understand more what I mean when you read the sections below, but suffice to say that with these ideas, you can often branch out or even mix options together to make even more money.
Here are ten side hustles and business ideas for making $100k or more.
1. Start a YouTube Channel
YouTubers can make $100,000s a year with some making millions from their channel. One of the most popular YouTubers out there, PewDiePie, is said to be worth around $40 million!
So, how exactly can you make money from YouTube? Well, there are a lot of ways but in order to monetize your channel in any fashion, you will need to get views.
Once you have enough views, you can qualify for the YouTube Partner Program and start making money from the ads that play on your videos. Reports suggest that for every 1,000 views you get, you earn between $0.25 and $7.
Ads aren’t the only way to make money from a YouTube channel though.
You can also earn from:
- Sponsored videos: These are videos created just for brands. In exchange for a sponsored video, brands pay YouTubers.
- Merch: Some YouTubers have merch that they sell to their viewers and make money from it.
- Affiliate links: Many YouTubers use affiliate links in the description box below their videos. Then, when people click through and buy something, the YouTuber makes a commission on the sale.
2. Be a Twitch streamer
If gaming is your thing, then you might want to consider becoming a Twitch streamer. Twitch streamers live stream their gameplay. Many play popular games like Minecraft and Call of Duty.
Being a Twitch Streamer can be incredibly lucrative. CNBC suggests that Twitch streamers earn anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000 a month, which works out at between $36,000 to $60,000 a year.
But, many of the platform’s streamers make 6-figures a year!
For example, Ninja, who has 16.9 million followers on Twitch makes $500,000 a month!
Another streamer who makes six figures in a just month is TimTheTatMan who, with 6.3 million subscribers, earns $50,000 to $100,000 a month.
So, how exactly do you earn an income from the platform?
You can make money through Twitch Affiliates, and once you’ve grown your channel, you can become a Twitch Partner.
Need exact numbers? Read “How much do Twitch streamers make” to see how much exactly the top streamers make and what you can make.
3. Become an Influencer
If you enjoy social media, then becoming an in
fluencer might be for you.
Many people make money creating sponsored content for brands on platforms like Instagram and Twitter.
Basically, as an influencer, you promote brands on your social media profiles, blogs, and YouTube. You get paid for these posts. It could be simply sending a Tweet that mentions a particular brand or a whole post dedicated to a brand’s new line of products.
Here are a few places to find work as a brand influencer:
- Cooperatize
- Influence Central
- PayPerPost
- SponsoredTweets
- Socialix
- BrandBacker
- Best Buy Influencer Network
Influencers with large followings can make 6-figures a year with many making millions from their social media channels.
According to CNBC, celebrities like Kylie Jenner, the Rock, and Cristiano Ronaldo, who each have more than 200 million followers on Instagram, can bring in more than $1 million per post!
You certainly don’t need as many followers as that though to make money. According to Fox Business, sponsored posts pay anywhere from $50 to more than $50,000!
To make $1,000s annually, you don’t need to have millions of followers.
According to Vox, people with smaller following, known as nano influencers, can earn anywhere from $30,000 to $100,000 a year. Micro-influencers can earn anywhere from $40,000 to $100,000 per year. With so many ways to diversify their income, like sponsored posts, affiliate links, and sales of things like merch or makeup lines, there are plenty of ways for influencers to make 6-figures.
Now, the bigger your following is, and the more engagement your posts get, the more money you will make, in general. So, you may have to put in the effort of building up a following before you can start making cash.
4. Start a podcast
A ton of people nowadays, including many celebrities, have their own podcasts. I mean there really is a podcast on pretty much any topic you could think of from TV shows to movies to sports to true crime. Really – no matter what your area of interest is, you’ll probably find a podcast on that subject.
Since podcasts are so popular nowadays, the field is more competitive than it used to be, but there’s still room in the industry for new podcasters.
This can be a really lucrative venture if you can get enough followers.
So, how exactly do podcasters make money?
They earn money through sponsors and advertisers. If you are looking to get into the industry, have a read of this guide from ThePodcastHost.com on how to start a podcast.
Exactly how much money you can make varies. It’s safe to say though that there’s A LOT of money in podcasting. In 2018, Amy Schumer signed a podcasting deal with Spotify for $1 million!
More recently, Spotify signed a deal with Joe Rogan that was said to be worth $100 million. The Joe Rogan Experience is said to make about $800,000 per episode.
Now, making millions is more likely for celebrities, of course, but it’s totally possible for anyone so long as they can gain a large following.
If you gain enough followers, you could earn six figures a year from your podcast through things like sponsorships, merch, and affiliate commission.
5. Try affiliate marketing
Another one to try is affiliate marketing. With affiliate marketing, you get affiliate links for products. Then, when a customer clicks on one of your affiliate links, they are taken to the usual product page where they can purchase the item. When the customer buys the product, you get a percentage of the sale.
For example, if you linked to a TV that was worth $800, and you earned 10% commission, you would make $80 on the sale.
To get affiliate links, you can sign up for an affiliate program. There are lots of different programs out there, and some good ones include:
Also, some brands, like Bluehost, have their own affiliate programs that you can join.
You can post affiliate links in lots of different places, like:
- Videos
- Landing pages
- Blog posts
- Newsletters
- A product resources page
- A comparison review site
- Social media posts
This is one of those ventures that really does require a lot of effort before it becomes profitable. But, it can really be worth the effort with some affiliate marketers making $100k plus from their venture.
Again, it’s all about getting eyes on whatever it is you are trying to sell – so you need traffic.
According to income reports, affiliate marketers can make anywhere from $11,000 to $401,500 a year!
Now, with affiliate marketing, you can earn a lot of money from it or nothing at all – that’s sort of the case with all of the ventures in this section.
What’s important is getting lots of clicks on your affiliate links. If no one clicks them, you’re not going to make any sales, and you won’t earn any commission. Get people to follow your links and make a purchase though, and this could be a great income stream for you.
6. Run a blog
Okay, so blogging is something that can be profitable, in that you can earn 6-figures with it, but it does take some time to build up.
Nobody is going to pay you simply for uploading blog posts (at least when you first start out and don’t yet have a large enough following to garner sponsored post opportunities from brands).
In order to start your own blog, you will need to use a platform like WordPress.org to publish content and get a domain name and hosting from sites like Bluehost, HostGator, and GoDaddy.
Of course, you will also need to choose a topic to write about.
Aside from uploading articles to your blog on a regular basis, you will also need to drive traffic. So learning about SEO is really important.
You can earn an income from your blog by putting ads on your site with Google AdSense and by using affiliate links in your posts. When you have a large enough following, you may even be able to make money uploading sponsored posts for brands.
In terms of how much money you can make, income from blogging really varies, with some making $100s and others making 6-figures a year from their blogs.
Here are a couple of examples of income reports from blogs:
- Create and Go made $86,477.74 in July 2021.
- Living the Dream made $11,605 in July 2021.
So, as you can see, it’s totally possible to make a 6-figure income from blogging. The more visitors your site gets, the more money you will make. So make sure that you upload posts consistently. And read this post to learn more about how to make money blogging.
7. Write books
If you are the creative type, then writing books could be the career for you with many people making $1,000s selling both fiction and non-fiction books with Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP).
With KDP, anyone can write and publish a book on Amazon. We all know how popular Amazon is so this can be a really good way to earn an income.
It’s important to note that in order to make money, you will need to market your book.
Marketing will drive sales and without them, you won’t make money. Now, the other thing that’s important is making sure that you have a few books up for sale.
Obviously, the more books you have out there, the more money you will make. But, having multiple books in your catalog also means that if a customer likes your book, they will likely see if there’s another one that they can read. So having one ready that they can buy can increase your profits.
Now, how much you can make from books depends on, of course, the number of sales you get. Some people make $100s a month from their books and others make $1,000s.
British author, Mark Edwards, makes £100,000 ($138,185.50) a year from his books.
With KDP, you can earn up to 70% in royalties, which is way more generous than the royalty rates that are offered by traditional publishing houses.
If you can generate a lot of sales, then this can be a really lucrative venture.
Of course, you won’t make $1,000s when you’re first starting out, but, if you can build up your following, and get a lot of sales, you can make 6-figures selling books.
8. Teach online
Another option is to sell courses online. You can create a course on pretty much any topic you want, and then sell it to people.
You can sell your courses on platforms like:
Or you could sell courses on your own website. According to Forbes, people can make more than $100,000 per year selling online courses.
While you’ll unlikely earn 6-figures when you’re just starting out, if you put in the effort, you’ll boost your income, and may hit that $100k mark. You’ll need to market your courses to drive sales, and, as you build up sales, you’ll make more money.
9. Sell stock photos
Selling stock photos can be another way to bring in six figures. With stock photo sites, you list your photos for sale, and then when a customer purchases them, you get a commission on the sale.
You can sell photos on your own site. Or you could sell them on a stock photo site.
The more sales you make, the more money you can earn.
If you sell through a stock photo site, rather than through your own website, you will need to give the site a cut of your profits. The commission offered varies from site to site:
- 500px gives you up to 60% commission.
- Get 50% to 100% commission on Snapwire.
- Alamy: 20% to 60% commission
Now, how much money you can make with this venture depends on how many photos you sell. Alamy has a series of blog posts all about photographers who have made at least $100,000 worth of sales on Alamy alone.
This article is from a guy who’s made $100,000 selling stock photos online. So, it is totally possible to earn 6-figures from selling stock photos.
10. Sell products on FBA
Okay, so next on the list, we have an option that does require quite a lot of effort, but it can net you 6-figures, and that’s selling products on Amazon with Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA).
Selling through FBA is the most popular way to sell on Amazon with 57% of sellers using FBA to sell.
With FBA, you, or your supplier, send products right to Amazon’s warehouse, and then Amazon handles the rest for you. So, Amazon will deal with things like shipping and customer service.
The process is simple:
- Choose a product or a few products that you want to sell on Amazon. You can source items from websites like Alibaba if you want to.
- Get your items delivered to an Amazon fulfillment center.
- Amazon will handle the rest for you, including shipping your products when they sell, and dealing with customer service.
Now, for providing you with these services, Amazon does charge you fulfillment fees.
The amount of money you can make from FBA depends on how many sales you make, the fees you pay to Amazon, and how much you get from each sale. It’s totally possible to make 6-figures in sales on Amazon.
On this Reddit thread, one person says that they make $17,000 a month in profits. Another Redditor says they broke 6-figures in sales within 9 months. So, this can be a good way to make a big income.
Of course, it does require the effort of sourcing products, shipping them to Amazon, and driving sales. Plus, you have to invest money upfront on inventory which has no guarantee of selling.
That’s why, if you don’t have the cash to spend upfront, I wouldn’t recommend FBA, and would instead start out with something like affiliate marketing where you can make money selling other people’s products. You could always choose to invest the money you make from affiliate marketing into purchasing inventory to sell through FBA.
FAQs on 6-Figures (& Other Income Levels!)
In this section, I just wanted to answer some common questions about 6-figure incomes.

This includes anything between $10,000 and $99,999.

How much is 6 figures a week?
Let’s take a look at some examples.
Example one:

Employees are paid an hourly rate though, so their weekly pay rate is based on the number of hours worked, which brings me to the next topic…
How much is 6 figures an hour?
Again, this all depends on what you earn.
If you worked 40 hours a week every week of the year, that would equate to 2,080 hours worked per year. Since a six-figure salary can range from $100,000 to $999,999 per year, this means a six-figure salary can work out to anywhere from $48.09 to $480.77 per hour.
Summary
Six figures is a lot of money and enough for most of us to live comfortably. Like I said earlier, the average American earns only around $51,000 a year so if you can clear six figures, you’ll be doubling the income of most people in the country.
What do you think is the best option for earning six figures? Is it getting a job that pays 6-figures or is it starting your own side hustle or business?
