Gift cards at Walmart include hundreds of options, from Walmart’s own gift cards to third-party brands like Starbucks, Apple, and Amazon, plus open-loop Visa and Mastercard prepaid cards you can use anywhere.
But here’s what most people don’t know…
Not every brand is available (Walmart doesn’t sell Amazon or Target cards), some come with activation fees (usually $3–$6 on prepaid cards), and what you’ll find in-store often differs from what’s online.
I’m walking you through exactly which gift cards are sold at Walmart right now: the major brands available, typical denominations ($10–$500 depending on the card), which ones have fees and which don’t, and the brands Walmart doesn’t carry.
You’ll also see how Walmart’s in-store selection compares to walmart.com, whether you can reload cards, and a few misconceptions people have about buying gift cards there.
By the end, you’ll know exactly which gift cards Walmart actually sells and which ones you have to buy from another store.

Walmart Branded Gift Cards
Of course, you can also buy Walmart gift cards at any Walmart store or on their website.
Walmart’s own gift cards are easy to find and don’t come with activation fees.
You can buy them in two forms:
- Walmart physical gift cards
- Walmart eGift cards
You can use Walmart gift cards at any Walmart store, on Walmart.com, and at Walmart gas stations near you.
What Gift Cards Does Walmart NOT Sell?
To save you a wasted trip, I can confirm there are a few popular gift cards that Walmart does not carry, and those are mainly gift cards for their competitors (which is totally understandable).
Here are the top brand gift cards you won’t find on the Walmart gift cards rack or website:
- Target Gift Cards: Walmart does not sell gift cards for its major retail rival.
- Costco Shop Cards: As a members-only warehouse club, Costco gift cards (which they call “Shop Cards”) are sold exclusively through Costco’s own channels.
The simple rule of thumb is that if a brand is a primary, direct competitor to Walmart, you shouldn’t expect to find its gift card there.
And if you can’t find a specific gift cards you are shopping for at your local Walmart, check out other stores. I have a similar guide covering the full list of gift cards sold at CVS.
Does Walmart Sell Amazon Gift Cards?
No, Walmart does not sell Amazon gift cards in its stores or directly on Walmart.com.
This is a firm policy based on standard retail practice where major competitors do not stock each other’s primary products.
The confusion usually comes from the Walmart Marketplace. While Walmart itself does not sell them, you may sometimes see a third-party seller listing an Amazon gift card for sale on Walmart’s website (usually at a higher price, too).
This is not the same as Walmart officially carrying the product. Remember, Walmart Marketplace is basically like Amazon, where different people and companies can sell stuff on their own.
If you want to buy an Amazon gift card safely and without a markup, your best bet is to purchase directly from approved retailers like drugstores or supermarkets.
And if you’d rather earn one than buy one, be sure to check out our full guide on how to get free Amazon gift cards for legitimate ways to earn them online.

What Denominations of Gift Cards Can You Buy at Walmart?
One of the best things about buying gift cards at Walmart is the flexibility in how much you can spend.
The values generally fall into two simple categories:
Fixed-Value Gift Cards
These are the popular ones you see at most stores’ gift card racks. They are sold at pre-set amounts.
This makes it quick and easy to grab a standard gift amount for popular brands like Starbucks, Apple, or even a Walmart gift card.
You’ll typically find them in denominations of:
- $10 gift card
- $15 gift card
- $25 gift card
- $50 gift card
- $100 gift card
Variable-Load Gift Cards
Variable load gift cards are those prepaid Visa, Mastercard, and Walmart’s own brand that let you choose the amount you want to load.
Yes, you literally choose how much you want that card to have, then activate it.
- Typical range is $20–$500.
Are There Activation Fees for Gift Cards You Buy at Walmart?
This is one of the most important questions, and I’ll make it really simple. The answer depends entirely on which type of card you grab from the rack.
No Fees for Brand-Specific Gift Cards
For the overwhelming majority of gift cards (think Apple, The Home Depot, Chili’s, Netflix, etc.), there are absolutely no hidden fees. You pay the exact face value of the card.
- Example: If you buy a $50 Starbucks card, it costs you exactly $50, and the recipient gets the full $50.
Fees for Prepaid Visa/Mastercard/AMEX Cards
This is where the confusion usually comes from. The flexible, “use anywhere” gift cards from Visa, Mastercard, and American Express have a one-time activation fee. This is a purchase fee you pay upfront. That amount is not part of your new card’s balance.
This fee is always clearly printed on the card’s packaging and generally ranges from $3.94 to $6.94, depending on the value of the card.
And no, you can’t avoid this fee at Walmart or any other retailer. That fee is actually how the company making those gift cards makes money!
- Example: To buy a $50 Visa gift card, you might pay a total of $54.94 at checkout.
Keep in mind that this fee is non-refundable, so be sure you’re buying the right amount!
Can You Get Discounts on Gift Cards at Walmart?
I get asked this a lot: “Can I get Walmart gift cards for less than their face value?”
For the most part, no. Gift cards are usually excluded from promotions, so you’ll almost always pay full price.
That said, there are a few ways you can save a little:
- Occasional bonus credit: Sometimes Walmart emails special offers where you can get extra store credit with a gift card purchase.
- Credit card rewards: Some cards give cash back or points when you buy gift cards (for example, 5% back on certain rewards cards.).
- Cashback apps: Apps like Ibotta or Fetch occasionally offer small rebates when you purchase Walmart gift cards.
Also, be very careful with any site claiming “heavily discounted” Walmart gift cards. Scams like that are unfortunately common, so stick to verified retailers.
