How Does Buff Work?

Now that you know what Buff is, you’re probably wondering how the platform works.

Here’s a quick step-by-step guide.

1. Sign up and download Buff

The first step is to download Buff. Buff is available worldwide, but some of the products in the Marketplace, so the rewards like gift cards, are only available to U.S. residents. So, if you reside in another country, you might not have as many reward options available to you.

You can download Buff on your desktop computer or on your iOS or Android phone. Buff is more designed for desktop gaming, rather than mobile games. It features way more games for PC. That being said, it does support a couple of mobile games, so you can still give it a try on your phone as well.

Now, it’s important to note that gaming consoles are not yet supported. If you wanted to get paid to play games on your Xbox or PlayStation, for example, this means that you won’t be able to right now.

You may be able to get paid for playing on games consoles in the future though, as Buff says, “Gaming Consoles are not supported yet, but we are planning on adding consoles to the list—stay tuned!”

Where to get Buff for Windows

You can get Buff for your PC by going to https://www.buff.game/.

Then, click on “Download Buff for Desktop.” There’s also a link in the top navigation bar that says “Download,” next to the Windows symbol. So, you can click on that too to get started.

Basically, a membership gives you access to more earnings, extra points each month, and a better price for rewards. You do not have to pay to use Buff though, so these Premium plans are totally optional.

Simply play games that Buff supports while running Buff in the background, and you will earn points called Buffs.

Other than playing games that it supports, you can also earn points when you:

You can earn points through the mobile app when you:

Okay, so for playing games, Buff will reward you. It has a lot of reward options available to users. It’s particularly good for gamers who’re looking to earn rewards playing their favorite PC games, and for mobile gamers too.

Below, I’ll cover more details on getting paid and how much you can expect to earn.

How does Buff pay you?

Buffs can be redeemed for a variety of rewards, which are called “Items.” This includes:

• Gift cards for Xbox, Amazon, Domino’s, and PlayStation.
• Money to your PayPal account.
• Gaming gear.
• Steam keys.
• In-game currency and in-game items for games like Apex Legends and League of Legends.

Next to each reward option, you’ll be able to see the number of points required to redeem it and the country availability. Unfortunately, some reward options are only available to users within the United States. This means that people in other countries don’t have access to as many reward options.

Most gift cards, such as those for Amazon and Domino’s, require 600 Buff points to redeem. Most other rewards, such as Steam wallet codes and in-game rewards, require about 900 to 1,500 Buff points to redeem.

How much does Buff pay you?

Now you know what types of rewards you can earn with the platform, you are probably wanting to know how much money you can make, right?

Well, it varies. Avid gamers can expect to earn about $5 to $15 in Buff points every month or so. But, you may earn more or less than that.

Let’s take a look at some income reports from people on Reddit so that you can get a better idea of how much money you can make on the platform:

• “It’s legit but don’t expect too much. I usually pay out in Riot Points for league of legends. I think it takes me around 2 months for 15€ of riot points.”

• “If you do your weekly challenges you can get 5 steam bucks in like 2 weeks.”

Another Redditor says:

• “Not very much, to be honest. Without premium, you make around 1-3 points for each game, depending if it’s a win or not. Maybe more if you reach some milestones in-app.

As a reference, you would need around a few hundred points to get stuff from their shop, some things being over 1k points and some being premium-exclusive, if I remember it correctly.”

Is Buff Legit?

So, is Buff Legit? Or is it just a scam? Let’s take a look at how Buff.game is rated on a few different platforms.

• Trustpilot: 4.4 stars, which is an “Excellent” rating. 5,044 reviews. Verified company.
• The Google Play store: 3.3 stars. 8.87k reviews. More than 1 million downloads.
• The App store: 3.3 stars. 511 Ratings.

So, the ratings on the app store are quite average. On Trustpilot, the platform has a much better rating.

I couldn’t find a profile for the company on the Better Business Bureau (BBB). It can be useful when a company does have a profile there because you can get an address for it and can view any customer complaints. Sadly, there isn’t a BBB profile. There’s no company address on the Buff website either. So, that’s not ideal.

You can call or chat with the company through Discord though and there’s a contact form on the website. So, if you need to get in touch with the company, you can.

So, the company isn’t badly rated on the Google Play Store, App Store, or Trustpilot. The reviews of it are mixed, but mostly to the average leaning towards the positive side. I had a thorough read of user reviews on those platforms and through many Reddit threads on the company to see what users actually have to say about using Buff. Let’s take a look at what users had to say.

Buff Customer Reviews

Okay, so reading reviews and reports from people who’ve actually used a platform is one of the best ways that you can determine whether or not a platform is legit. After all, companies can claim they are super great and legit on their official site, but then when you go on sites like Reddit and Trustpilot, it’s a totally different story, and you find many complaints.

I did find many good reviews of the company, particularly on Trustpilot, like this reviewer who said:

• “Good app it’s legit and can actually get you good games and gift cards all though they aren’t available all the time.” (Review from Trustpilot).

However, there were also some reviews that were mixed and some that were poor.

Let’s take a look at some of the common complaints I saw about Buff:

It takes ages to earn enough points to redeem a reward

One of the common concerns that I saw was that it takes ages to get enough points to redeem for a reward.

Quite a few people complained about this, saying:

• “App is really bad. I’ve been using it for about 2 months and haven’t been able to get a single item. I play games daily and complete at least 3 missions a day and all weekly missions and have made no progress. If you don’t have premium or spend real money you spend almost half a year getting enough points for something of use. You’re better off saving for it IRL than hoping to get anything here.” (Review from the Google Play store).
• “It’s unique and has a good idea, but you would have to pay for the subscriptions just to get the gift cards at a decent speed, and even with the subscriptions it would take a few months at best to get a $10 gift card. If you’re on mobile then just use Mistplay, it’s better and faster with more variety, it’s not worth it to pay for a slow rate of money losing returns.” (Review from the Google Play store).

Concerns over data collection

I also saw a few people saying they were concerned that Buff could be selling their data:

• “They probably sell your data, so that’s how they make money, by selling your data to 3rd parties. It’s a bit risky, but if you really want to keep using it, it’s really up to you.” (Review from Reddit).
• “I’d be cool with it not giving much money but I’m more concerned with how they can afford to give you stuff for playing games. Do they sell your data? Do they mine bitcoin?” (Review from Reddit).

Rewards often out of stock

I saw A LOT of users complaining that by the time they earned enough points to redeem a reward, that reward was out of stock. Obviously, that’s not ideal.

• “I’ve been using buff for a while now and the only complaint is that everything is always “out of stock”. IDK how often they restock stuff so I’ve just been sitting on a pile of buff coins.” (Review from Reddit).

Sometimes games aren’t properly tracked

I saw a few users complaining that their gaming progress wasn’t properly tracked by Buff. This meant that users didn’t earn Buffs.

Many people complain that it’s mining for Bitcoin

Now, this one, I’ll go into a little more detail about later in the post, but to mention this briefly here, there’s a concern among some that while Buff is running in the background on your PC, it’s actually mining for Bitcoin.

One user says:

• “It uses some of your pc outputs to the app for unknown purposes The unknown purpose is probably bitcoin mining. Edit: yeah it’s a crypto miner it downloads overwolf which mines.” (Review from Reddit).

Is Buff Safe to Use?

Short answer: Yes, Buff is safe to use. Okay, so some of the reviews of Buff are mixed. But, there aren’t too many outright red flags about the company. There are some complaints though, as I mentioned above.

Below, I just want to go into more detail about the safety of the platform and some of the safety concerns you may have about the company.

On its website, the company says, “For Buff to be featured in Overwolf’s Appstore, it had to pass thorough security and authenticity tests… Buff is malware-secure, virus-free, and doesn’t mine for crypto. We care about your security, so you can Buff with ease and without worries.”

Is all of that true though? Is Buff safe to use?

Let’s take a look at some safety concerns you may have about the platform.

Does Buff collect data?

In the Buff FAQ section, the company says, “The privacy and security of our users are of top priority to us. We use your game performance and achievements to give you the Buffs you’ve earned, other than that we are not interested in any kind of user data.”

So, it seems as though, aside from your game performance and achievements, Buff isn’t collecting user data.

The company’s privacy policy tells a slightly different story though. It says: “We collect personal data about the users of the Services. We also collect personal data included in publicly available sources.”

So, yeah, the company does collect personal data from users. Have a read of Buff’s privacy policy to learn more about what data it collects.

Is my data secure with Buff?

Personally identifiable information (PII) refers to data that can potentially identify a specific individual. PII is any information that can be used to distinguish one individual from another and to deanonymize previously anonymous data.

Buff states that it follows, “Generally accepted industry standards to protect against unauthorized access to or unauthorized alteration, disclosure or destruction of PII.”

So, that seems good. The company does also say, “However, no method of transmission over the Internet, or method of electronic storage, is 100% secure. Therefore, while we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your PII, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.”

Is Buff a Bitcoin miner?

There’s no hard evidence to suggest that Buff mines for Bitcoin. Buff states on its website that it DOES NOT mine for Bitcoin.

There are a lot of rumors about it though, especially on Reddit. Do your own research, but as far as I can tell the company is not mining for crypto.

Does Buff.game have Malware or viruses?

No. Buff.game is malware-free and virus-free.

Does Buff slow down your PC?

Buff uses your computer to run, but it doesn’t really slow down your PC.

According to the company, you won’t need to change your game’s settings because of Buff and won’t feel any change with it running in the background.

Still, some users do complain it slowed down their system, but you probably won’t notice a difference.

Buff Pros and Cons

Buff is legit and safe to use. It is worth your time though?

Let’s take a look at the pros and cons to help you decide.

Pros

Let’s start out with the positives.

Cons

Now, let’s take a look at some of the downsides to Buff:

• You don’t earn much for playing games. It can take months to earn enough points to cash out a $5 to $15 gift card.
• It collects data.
• Rewards are often out of stock. And there are fewer rewards offered to users outside of the U.S.
• Games consoles aren’t supported, and there are few mobile games on offer.

Overall Verdict

Overall, Buff is a safe and legit app that pays you for playing games. The “pay” is in the form of points which you can redeem for rewards.

However, it can take months to redeem just $5 to $15 worth of gift cards. Even when users do get enough points to redeem for a reward, many of the rewards are out of stock.

Buff.game is worth it for PC gamers who already enjoy playing games like Minecraft and League of Legends (and who don’t mind sharing their data). In that case, it gives gamers a way to make a little extra money. For others though, it’s not worth your time. Options like freelance writing, driving for Uber and delivering stuff pay way better.
