Most banks give you a starter set of checks for free when you first open a bank account with them. After that though, you’re on your own.
And at some point, sooner or later, depending on how many checks you write, you’ll run out of checks. If you want to restock you will need to pay for your checks. Depending on how often you need to write checks, restocking can end up costing you a sizeable amount.
Ordering checks directly from your bank isn’t always the best option either because it tends to be expensive.
One of the best places to order checks is online.
There are companies that allow you to get checks mailed right to you. This includes personal checks and business checks, and you can choose between duplicate and single checks.
Just in case you don’t already know, duplicate checks come with a thin carbon copy sheet behind each one. This means you’ll have a copy for your records. Single checks don’t have this paper behind them and are cheaper than duplicate checks. Online, you can order both types of checks.

Check (pun intended!) with your bank first
As mentioned most banks and financial institutions will give free checks or 2-3 free checkbooks as an introductory offer when you open a bank account with them for the first time.
Some banks actually give you a few (like 5-10) for free after your un out of your initial checks.
This includes almost all small and big banks and financial institutions like credit unions such as:
- Bank of America
- U.S. Bank
- Chase
- Commerce Bank
- Wells Fargo
- SunTrust
- Capital One Financial Corp
This is also true for smaller Credit Unions like Neighbors Credit Union, smaller banks such as Aspiration (review), as well as small regional and local banks.
That said, when there are no more checks left in the initial checkbooks your bank gave you, before ordering new ones, it won’t hurt to simply ask your current bank if they do offer more free checks. You never know!
Also, from time to time, some banks run promotional offers like bank account promotions that give you free money for opening a new Checking or Savings account. from time to time that could include free checkbooks. So take a minute and check with your bank first to see if they offer free checks.

What Do You Need to Order Checks Online
To order checks online, you will need some information, which includes:
Advertisements
- Contact information
- Checking account number
- Bank routing number
- Bank’s contact information
- A check number
Here’s a bit more info about each item required for ordering checks and checkbooks online.
Contact information
So you will need your name and address when ordering checks online.
Checking account number
You can usually find your bank account number on your bank statement or at the bottom of any checks you already have. On checks, your account number is usually the second number from the left (checks use a series of 3 numbers at the bottom).
Bank routing number
Your bank routing number identifies where your account was opened, so it basically acts as an address so that the banking system knows which bank will pay the check. Routing numbers can be found on the bottom of checks, and all you need to do is look for the 9-digit number on the bottom left.
If you don’t have a check, then you should be able to get the routing number from your bank. There are two ways to do this. Firstly, you could visit your bank’s website and see if they list routing numbers on there. Searching Google for your bank’s name, followed by the words “routing number” is a good way to find it. Or, secondly, you could contact your bank and ask them to provide you with the routing number.
Bank’s contact information
Also required is your bank’s contact information. Make sure you enter the correct address – so double check here! Check the address against your existing checks if possible.
A check number
Okay, so if you have been using a checkbook for a while, and you’re on say, check number 99 in your checkbook, then consider starting the new set with check number 100. Ordering checks that start with a check number you haven’t used yet is a good idea for keeping your finances organized. It is, however, optional.
Final Check!
Purchasing checks from the bank can end up being pretty expensive especially when you are ordering them frequently. Ordering them online can work out much cheaper and there are plenty of options for doing so nowadays.
Of course, it’s important to compare prices. Do ask your bank about the price of checks, and then compare that price with those offered online. Don’t go with the first website you come across either. Take the time to compare the price offered by each one and don’t forget to consider factors other than the price such as shipping time, shipping cost, and other features on offer.
Then choose the site that best suits your needs. All of the sites above are legit and safe ways to order checks online at great prices with a wide variety of designs that you can customize.
