Are you a good driver?
If so, you might be missing out on an opportunity to get paid for driving well. I’m not talking about Uber here. There are actually a few apps that pay you to drive safely with no strings attached.
A lot of people think that distracted driving is just texting, but it actually applies to more than that. Distracted driving is anything that causes a driver to stop paying complete attention to the road.
This could include:
- Eating
- Drinking
- Messing with the radio
- Talking or texting on the phone
- Other passengers
Distracted driving is dangerous, claiming 2,841 lives in 2018 alone, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Among those killed were 1,730 drivers, 605 passengers, 400 pedestrians, and 77 bicyclists. Not only that, but an estimated 400,000 people were injured by distracted driving.

If you are someone who isn’t prone to distracted driving, you can actually capitalize on this by making money with your car by just driving safely. It’s that easy!
It might also convince you not to pick up the phone when you’re on the road, which helps promote safety for everyone. That sounds like a win-win to me.

Apps that Pay for Driving Data
The following are apps that will pay you to drive safely.
Note that these are third-party apps and are different from programs some of the major car insurance companies have, such as these Good Driver Discounts.
Most of these are apps that pay you to drive with your smartphone locked. Some will require you to use them while you are driving around, meaning they’ll use your phone’s GPS to track your movements. Many of them use this data to pay you for your mileage.
1. Safe2Save
Available for: iOS and Android
Earn points as you drive undistracted and redeem them at local businesses you love.
Here’s how this app works in three easy steps:
- Step 1: Open the app when you’re about to drive and leave it open the entire time.
- Step 2: Once you’re done driving, accept the points you’ve earned.
- Step 3: Redeem your points for rewards!
2. DriveSense
Available for: iOS and Android
Are you a user of Esurance? If so, you can use their DriveSense app to get an extra discount on your insurance payment every time you drive safely. This can end up saving you a ton of money on car insurance payments in the long run.

Additionally, after a trip, you will get to see data about your own habits, such as:
- Detailed trip information (location, time of day, duration of trip, driving habits)
- Real-time feedback on specific driving risks like speeding and sudden braking
- Your personal driving wellness meter
- Weekly recap of risky events
3. Miles
Available for: iOS and Android
The way this app works is simple: you earn miles for all of your commutes and travel, then redeem those miles for exclusive rewards.
Plus, this works even if you aren’t driving! Even if you are just taking a walk, biking, or carpooling, you can still earn.
You can get rewards from:
- STASH
- Scentbird
- Winc
- Postmates
- Geologie
- TURO
- Target
Learn more about how it works and how you can earn more miles and rewards by reading my review of the Miles app.
4. Down For the Count
Update: No longer available!
Available for: iOS
This app rewarded you for not using your phone while driving and was best suited for families with teen drivers. Families and friends could sponsor a teen driver, helping them earn cash for driving safely. Every time a teen drove without opening their phone, they earned a small portion of cash that built up over time.
You could also open up sponsorships for anyone, including yourself.
The app rewarded you with gift cards and exclusive coupons.
5. Mobilio
Available for: iOS and Google Play
Research shows that the only way to beat the urge to use your phone while driving is to leverage the same powerful psychological forces that make smartphone apps so addictive, according to Mobilio. That’s why they have created an app that rewards people for driving without distractions.
They pay you in their own special point system, which you can use to redeem rewards. They are also working toward adding a system that will allow insurance companies to accept Mobilio tokens as part of insurance payments.
6. OnMyWay
Available for: iOS and Android
OnMyWay is one of the few apps that pay you to drive without texting. According to their website, you and your friends can earn money just for driving without distractions.
Some features of the app are:
- You get paid $0.05 for every mile you don’t text and drive.
- Passengers who are also users of the app will get paid too.
- You get $10 just for signing up.
- Get a $2 bonus for referring friends.
- Earn $0.02 for every mile your referred friends drive.
I go into much more detail in my OnMyWay app review, so be sure to check it out if you want to learn more before installing it.
In Conclusion
Everyone should drive without distractions, but why not earn some extra money while you do it too? Essentially, these apps pay you to drive around! Not only can this help your wallet, but it can also help you and your family maintain good driving habits.
