Crowdsourcing means that people like you and me can get consistent work from Amazon, delivering packages for it.
Many people have compared parcel delivery by Amazon Flex with the taxi service offered by Uber.
And just like you can make money driving for Uber, you can also make good money with Amazon Flex.
How to become an Amazon Flex driver
To get started, you need to fill out the application.
The first step is to go to the website https://flex.Amazon.com.
From there you can fill out a form to sign up.
Amazon will contact you to come in for an informational session, giving you all the details.
You need an Amazon account, but you can create one on the spot when you start.
Amazon Flex locations
Amazon’s plan is to roll this out across the country, but as it only started at the end of last year there are a limited number of cities offering the service, and consequently needing Amazon Flex drivers.
Amazon Flex is currently available in these cities:

By the way, if you want to work for Amazon no matter where you live, you can apply as a Customer Service Associate and work for Amazon from home.
Requirement for becoming a Flex driver
You need a car, an Android phone, and to be a licensed driver of 21 or older.
Amazon will provide you with the Flex app for your phone.
Amazon doesn’t allow you to walk or bike for deliveries.
There will also be a background check – obviously Amazon doesn’t want drivers who may make off with the parcels!
How delivering for Amazon Flex works
Well, it is simple but you do have to follow some rules.
For instance, you can’t pick the exact area you want to deliver in within the metro areas available, you have to go where they tell you.
You pick up the items for delivery at a location near you and take them anywhere within a local radius.
You can sign up to deliver in 2, 4, or 8 hour blocks of time if they’re available on a particular day, and book your availability for up to 12 hours on any day in the future.
You can work seven days a week. So it’s fairly flexible, but obviously, you have to be reliable once you say you are available.
How much does Amazon Flex pay?
Amazon Flex driver pay varies.
Amazon is offering $18 – $25 per hour, and it seems that the average driver is making at least that with the services that are currently running.
You will deliver ultra-fast Prime Now orders which Amazon delivers in one or two hours, and in the future may deliver parcels.
You can’t generally specify what sort of things you will deliver.
The only downside
This looks like a great gig to get in on.
The only cloud that is really hanging over it is the same one that is hanging over Uber, and that is that as an independent contractor, you don’t get any benefits or healthcare.
This may not be an issue for you, as the pay is good and you can have as flexible a schedule as you wish. Plus, most people who sign up for Flex probably have a full time job and are looking at delivering Amazon packages as a side hustle.
This makes no difference to your day-to-day deliveries, but I expect Amazon Flex to follow on whatever legal decisions are made for Uber drivers.
Final thoughts
If you’re in another major metro area, you should certainly go on the waiting list. At the rate that Amazon is pushing out the service, it probably won’t be long before Amazon Flex becomes available in your area.
If you’re one of the lucky ones who lives in a city that Flex is currently operating in and you want to earn extra money on the side, I think delivering packages with Amazon Flex is a great side gig.
