Benefits of using a fuel rewards card
So, why would you go through the trouble of signing up for it?
That’s the first question you should ask yourself here.
Well, you want to sign up for a Fuel Rewards card because there is no purchase that is more inevitable than a fuel purchase.
Shell offers maybe the best Fuel Rewards card at the moment, so we’ll be talking about theirs.
This fuel reward card will get you 3¢ off your fuel purchases whenever you swipe it at the station, which is quite a good thing.
You might be thinking, “3 cents? What’s the point?”
In return, I would have to ask: would you rather buy fuel for $3.01, or $2.98?
Considering that people would often put regular in their tanks regardless of what the owner’s manual says, I’m guessing that we’re already used to sweating the pennies for our fuel purchases.

How to Sign up for Shell Fuel Rewards
In order to join the program, you will have to first pick up a free FRN Card.
You can pick this card up at any of the more than 380 participating local Shell stations, or you can request one when you are signing up for the program online.
Once you get the card, you need to activate it by registering on the site. Here is how:
- Go to fuelrewards.com and click “Sign Up.”
- On the first page, put in your name, address, email and a phone number.
- On the second page you’ll be asked to choose a password and security question and answer.
- The next page is for linking your master card. If you want to link your card, this is where you do it. (I’ll talk about the benefits of linking your card later in the post). Enter the info and hit “save”. If you don’t want to link your card, then click “skip”.
- If you got your card from a station already, on the next page select “I have a card, I’ll link it now ”, then enter your card number and PIN (found in the back of your card). This will activate your card and you will be able to start using it to earn rewards and save on gas.
- If you don’t have the card, then choose “I need a card, please send me one” and provide your address so they can mail you one.
Once you enter the info, hit save. You will see this message “Thanks! Your card is on the way – it will arrive in 7-10 business days.”. Once you get your card, use it as the participating stations to earn rewards and save on gas.
How Does Shell Fuel Rewards Work
Once you get the card, it’s as simple as swiping it and claiming your discount. However, you can also use the links provided on the website to build rewards.
If you do it that way, go to the FRN website and look through their linked retailers before you make any purchases– if they are a sponsored retailer, you can earn 5¢ a gallon for every $50 you spend.
I can’t say that’s really much money, but it is totally free money, which is never something to scoff at.
Link your Mastercard for more savings
As a sponsor of the Fuel Rewards Program, you can get extra rewards if you link your Rewards account to your Mastercard.
If you spend $100 on groceries through your Mastercard, you’ll get 3¢ off your next gallon.
They offer different rewards based on different types of purchases, and the promotions that they’re running change all the time.
Whenever you read this article, you’ll want to go to their website and see what’s currently running to see all of the things you can get your rewards through!
Right now they’re running at least 10 different types of sponsored promotions. For example, at the time of writing this post, they have a Pennzoil promotion that can save you up to $1 per gallon!
You earn $1.00/gal in Fuel Rewards savings when you purchase a 5-quart bottle of Pennzoil. That’s $1 off of a gallon of fuel!
You can find running portions by vising fuelrewards.com/promotions
Grocery Rewards
Grocery stores in particular are happy to participate with the Fuel Rewards Network, particularly certain regional grocery stores.
The discount provided per $100 listed up above still applies, and these stores will be willing to offer you even further rewards for participating:
- Homeland
- HyVee
- Country Mart
- S-Mart Foods
- Lucky
- Save Mart Supermarkets
- Winn Dixie
- BiLo
There are also eCoupons available on the FRN that will give you savings if you use them at the store.
They aren’t coupons in the strictest sense, more of purchase vouchers; it does not discount the purchase, and instead offers a reward of 5¢ a gallon per coupon you redeem.
How Much Can You Save?
You might have been thinking as you read this that the rewards you are building up to aren’t really that significant.
But think again!
Fuel Rewards Network members save, on average, 20 cents a gallon!
Now if I told you that you could save 20 cents a gallon, which is the approximate difference between a gallon of premium and a gallon of regular, I bet you’d be a little more interested.
And when you take advantage of promotions, like the one I mentioned above that offer $1/gal savings, this can add up to a substantial amount of saving over the long run.
Now it’s important to note that when you cash out your saved up rewards, you’re cashing them all out at once. Make sure you’re ready to get some gas when you go to cash them out!
Rewards can be tracked through the website, just so you know what they’re at currently.
The Bottom Line
Saving a double-digit amount of cents on a gallon of gas is something that the average consumer stands to benefit from, so don’t scoff at the possibility!
Savings on gas can be right around the corner for you, and you don’t have to spend even a single cent extra.
