Now that October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness month, is coming up, you can find tons of organizations that are willing to give you a free mammogram. You can also get screenings from other organizations all year long with some of the resources we list below.
Mammography is a non-invasive X-ray screening that checks breasts for breast cancer and other abnormalities and helps to detect it long before it can be felt.
Over 70% of breast cancer occurs in women who have no known risk factors, according to the University of Health San Francisco. This is why it’s important to get a screening because you might not even know if you have it.

Listed below, we have several resources that can help you get free screenings and protect yourself from breast cancer.

Here’s where to get a free or low-cost Mammogram this month.
The American Cancer Society can help you pay for your mammogram and find organizations nearby you that will provide this health service. They have a whole page dedicated to helping you prepare financially and mentally for the screening.
You may not have thought to check out the CDC for breast cancer assistance, but this organization actually has a program to help you. The National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program funded 191,984 mammograms in 2017. Contact them to see if you qualify for their assistance.
If you have Medicare, it will cover one baseline mammogram if you are a woman between 35 – 39. If you are over 40, you can get one every 12 months or, if diagnosed by a doctor, more as needed.
Medicaid covers screening mammography for women as a preventive health measure for the purpose of early detection of breast cancer. Coverage may vary depending on the state you are in, so be sure to look into what’s covered for you. Pelvic exams and PAP smears are also available through this program.
The American Breast Cancer Foundation has an assistance program that can help you get a free check-up. ABCF has provided more than 46,300 grants for breast cancer screenings and diagnostic services, and you can become part of that number too. Check out their website to see if you qualify.
This organization, which has provided numerous health services to women and actually saved their lives, also provides free mammograms on Breast Cancer Awareness month.
ENCOREplus provides breast and cervical cancer outreach and education for all women. Contact them to see how they can help you out. They can also get you PAP screenings through the Breast and Cervical Treatment Act provided by the Department of Health and the Federal Center of Disease Control.
8. Your own doctor
Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, if you are 40 or older your insurance is required to cover screenings for mammograms. You read more about it, as well as other required women’s health assistance, here.
The Susan G. Komen foundation can help you receive a free screening as well as other help. Financial assistance is granted to women who meet pre-determined eligibility criteria. To learn more about this program and find out if you are eligible, call the Komen Breast Care Helpline at 1-877-465-6636.
Why are yearly mammograms important?
