Everyone wants to save money on gasoline if they can. In this Trunow app review, I’ll be showing you an app that claims it can save you hundreds of dollars on your gas purchases.
The average cost of gas per gallon in 2019 was $2.82, according to the AAA. In some states, the price ended up averaging well over $3. While prices in 2020 are expected to drop, there are still many states where the average remains close to that $2.82 mark from the year before.
That can really add up when you need to fill up your gas tank. Many families can’t afford to spend over $50 to fill up their cars for the month.
That’s where Trunow comes in. This is a cashback app for gas that lets you get cashback on every single gas purchase you make, no matter what station you bought it from. Pretty nifty, right?

How does Trunow pay?
Trunow offers a rate of 2% cash back on purchases from partnered retailers and 1% from non-partnered ones.
It also offers a referral bonus for getting your friends to sign up and a slight bonus for confirming or changing the listed gas price at a given location.
You can connect your credit cards to the app or sign up through PayPal. However, going for the PayPal option cuts your rewards in half, so be warned.
User Reviews of Trunow App
When signing up for an app like this, you should always look at what other users have to say. After all, you don’t want to waste your time on something that sucks! One of the best places to find out what people think of an app or company is the Better Business Bureau.
According to the BBB, this company is rated A due to its responses to customer complaints. Trunow has only been in business for a year, however, so this may change as more users come forward with their experiences.
The company doesn’t have any reviews on the site, but it does have one complaint that was lodged against it this year. Trunow responded to that complaint quite quickly and they settled the problem for the customer.

Here are a few reviews I found on Reddit about the app:
“It’s really nice getting the 1% back. The only problem I have with it is that it’s a little misleading. When checking out the cashout option I found that the 1% is cut in half when you choose PayPal. You can use the full amount to purchase from their retailers,” said a Reddit user.
“I’ve been using the app for about a month now. Seems pretty good but I haven’t cashed out yet,” said another user.
On both the Apple App Store and on the Google Play store, the app struggles to maintain a rating above 2 stars out of 5.
Common Complaints
While Trunow may be legit, it still has a lot of problems. After reading dozens of reviews, here are the complaints I found that most users seem to bring up:
- Customer service is slow and sometimes unresponsive
- They limit the number of cards you are allowed to link to
- Updating your expired cards is a hassle and sometimes impossible
- The app sometimes crashes and freezes on older phones
- They take a 50% cut if you cash out with PayPal instead of a gift card
Is Trunow Legit or a Scam?
This is where things get tricky. Most people say it is not a scam. It’s just janky. Which is a different thing altogether.
You can get real rewards from the app, and it seems like a legitimate business, but the app can be frustrating to use.
The one positive thing to be said is that almost all users report getting their money when they ask for it. Trunow may do a lot of things poorly, but it seems that they make an effort at following through on payment.
In Conclusion
Should you join Trunow?
I hesitate to fully endorse the app because of the numerous complaints people have made about it. While the payment may be legit, the many glitches and slow customer service make it a questionable program. For many people, joining it was simply a waste of time because it didn’t work.
However, there is no doubt that they do actually pay you the money you earn from scanning receipts. So, if you can deal with all the other complaints, it might be worth a shot just to get some extra money for a little bit.
If Trunow ever fixes their service, then this app could be an excellent tool for users to earn cashback without worry. There are also other alternatives like GetUpside (review) as well as GasBuddy (review) which you could try.
