How to Save Money on Candles
If you love the smell of candles but don’t like the sight of their prices, here are the best ways to save money on them.
1. Join Rewards Programs
Wherever you purchase your candles, if the store has a rewards program, then consider joining it.
Each time you shop, you’ll earn discounts and free stuff, so this is such a good way to save cash on candles.
Here are a few places that provide rewards programs:
Yankee Candles
Yankee Candle offers a rewards program called the Fragrance Family Rewards (formerly known as Yankee Candle Fan Club).
As a member, each time that you spend $1 at YC, you’ll earn 100 points. Then, when you get 10,000 points, you’ll get a voucher worth $5.
Bath & Body Works
With the Bath & Body Works Rewards Program, you earn 10 points for every dollar you spend on eligible items. And when you have 1000 points you can redeem your points which gives you a free product of your choice up to $16.95.
So, this is a great way to get your hands on a free candle.
Target Circle™ Card
The Target Circle™ Card is a store loyalty card, but it differs in that it also functions as a credit or debit card.
And, since Target sells Yankee candles, this 5% saving can help you to save money, especially when you factor in the fact that Target also has great sales on candles. So, you can combine sales with the 5% cashback and save even more.

2. Shop brand sales
If you’re a fan of big brand candles, like Yankee candles, then make sure you visit your favorite brand’s website.
Often, brands have some really great sales on their websites that offer big discounts.
For example, Yankee has a semi-annual sale where you can get up to 75% off its candles. You can get a candle that’s normally priced around $30 for about $15!
And, they also heavily discount their other candles – for example, in this year’s sale, you could get 3 full candles for $10 – normally one small candle costs you $11, so this is a great saving.
Colonial Candle also features a clearance section on its website.
Here are a few clearance pages from major brands:
3. Shop at off-price stores
Off-Price stores, like TJ Maxx, Marshall’s and Ross often have candles at a discounted price.
And, you can find scented candles from big brands, such as Yankee.
A few users on Reddit have mentioned this tip too:
- One Reddit user says: “Also TJ Max/Marshalls candles. When they go on clearance I find nice candles on sale for $3-5. I usually buy a bunch of generic scented ones (vanilla/cupcake/cinnamon/etc.) for holiday gift baskets.”
- One Reddit user says: “I get most of my candles on clearance from TJ Maxx, Burlington Coat Factory, Marshalls, etc. I don’t spend more than $3 or $4 on each one.”
- Another Reddit user says: “I’ve found good deals at TJMaxx & Marshall’s too.”
- Another user says: “I always get my candles from TJ Maxx, Home Goods or Marshalls. They have the best deals by far. Even the candles for 7.99 are originally double that price! They also have the best range of candles for cheap!”
4. Check out Bath & Body Works Candles
If you’re really looking to save money on candles, then you should definitely check out the candles from Bath & Body Works.
The brand has some great scented candles, and they have sales on often. So, you can get candles at a great price.
Some of the brands they carry include:
- Virginia
- WoodWick
- Slatkin & Co
- White Barn
A few users on Reddit praise Bath & Body Works for their discounts and high quality scented candles:
- One Reddit user says: “Bath & Body Works candles! Never full price, but I usually get them for $10ish a piece on sale + 20-30% discount. Personally I love pumpkin spice and the watermelon lemonade ones.”
- Another Reddit user says: “Bath and Body Works has good candles too, and you can often find them on sale for 40-50% off.”
- And another Reddit user says: “Bath and Body works candles. I think they’re exponentially better than Yankee. I can burn one in a room for less than 20 minutes and the whole house will smell like it (some of them are so strong I can only burn them for 5 minutes before the scent gets to be too much). This is something worth considering when thinking about “burn times”–If it takes you an hour of burning to be able to smell it, but lasts 2x as long, you’re still not getting the best deal.”
- One Reddit user also states that they often get coupons from the brand: “About every two months Bath & Body Works mails me a set of coupons. One is for something $5 for free, one is typically 20% off order, the last is off something specific.”
5. Sign up for email lists
Again, if you like candles from a particular brand, then it’s always worth checking to see if it has an email list you can subscribe to.
Some brands, like Yankee Candles and Bath & Body Works, send you exclusive offers via email – so you should definitely sign up.
By joining their email newsletter you’ll get access to exclusive deals and discounts. For example, if you sign up for Yankee’s newsletter, not only you get exclusive coupons, you also get free shipping on candles.
One user on Reddit says: “Sign up for the emails! I just got a $10 off $30 in an email, and then got a second one in the store when I checked out.”
Here are a few email newsletter worth signing up for:
6. Consider Wax Melts & Warmers instead
If you enjoy candles more for the scent, rather than the flame, then consider getting wax melts instead.
Wax melts are made using waxes and fragrant oils, but unlike candles, they do not have a wick or a flame.
Instead, you place a wax melt into an electric wax warmer and heat it. You get the same fragrance, just not the flame – and they tend to last longer than candles do.
One user on Reddit says: “I use a candle warmer, it’ll give you the smell but not the light. Just remelt your wax over and over again! Obviously they lose their scent eventually, but in my experience I get a lot more use out of the candles”
Yankee Candle and Bath & Body Works do wax melts, and Amazon also has a selection available.
7. Make candles from scratch at home
Making your own candles can sometimes work out cheaper – but not always though.
And if you get good at it, you can even make money selling candles.
Many people suggest making soy candles as a more cost-effective option.
One Reddit user says: “Make your own: buy soy wax, melt in a double boiler arrangement (you can use a Ziploc bag for that), and add your own essential oils and wicks.”
Another Reddit user says: “Honestly if you have the time, it doesn’t take much start up cost and is really fun, I make my own soy candles. Works out to be less than $1 per candle, they burn for a really long time, and you can customize the scent. I also make some for gifts and sell some. Candlescience.com will have everything you need, or you may have a local candle supply shop nearby, I do and prices are comparable to candle science.”
Here are a few places where you can find instructions on how to make them:
8. Use coupon sites
Another really easy way to save money on candles is to use coupons.
Now, we already mentioned above that some stores and brands offer coupons in their newsletters and other promotions. But, rather than just getting coupons directly from the brand, consider coupon websites.
On these websites, you can find some awesome deals on candles from big name brands, like Yankee Candles, and stores.
For example, these websites offer coupons for Yankee Candle:
- RetailMeNot
- coupons.com
- DealsPlus
- CouponCabin
- BeFrugal
- Coupon Sherpa
- DealCatcher
- Coupon Chief
- Giving Assistant
So, take a look and see how much you can save!
And, there are websites out there that offer Bath & Body Works candles coupons:
For example, on Coupons.com, there’s a coupon available gets you up to 50% off on home fragrance.
You can, of course, find coupons for almost any brands by doing a quick search on any of these big coupon sites.
9. Shop clearance online
Besides brands’ own website, you can also find candles on sale on third-party shopping sites.
With these sites, not only you can find cheaper candles, you can also benefit from their own exclusive deals and discounts.
For example, on Scents And Sprays not only you can get discounted candles, you also get an extra 25% off on your order by using “SAVE25” PROMO CODE.
Bath and Body Works also has tons of sales on, including a semi-annual sale.
Here are a few best places to shop for discounted candles:
- ScentsAndSprays
- Bath and Body Works (Semi-Annual Sale)
- Amazon (clearance)
- Yummi Candles (wholesale prices)
10. Make your candles last longer
There are actually things that you can do to make your candles last longer – and therefore spend less on them!
A former Yankee Candle employee shares his hacks on Reddit:
“Make sure you’re getting the best use of your candles, and the rules apply to whatever brand you pick: burn until the entire surface is liquid to avoid tunneling, always trim the wick before lighting to 1/8-1/4 an inch (when it gets low in the jar, you can use nail clippers or specialty tools from YC), and if you get a carbon ball immediately extinguish, trim, and relight (the carbon balls burn faster, reducing your candle’s lifespan).”
So, keep the wick short, burn the candle’s entire surface, and you’ll ensure that your candles last longer.
And, when your candles last longer, you won’t have to buy them as often.
11. Check out yard sales
Another really great place to find cheap candles is at yard sales.
A lot of people get a candle, light it once or twice, and then decide that they don’t like the smell of it. So, they’ll sell it at a yard sale for a really low price – after all, they’d probably just throw it out anyway.
One user on Reddit mentioned that they’ve gotten some great deals on candles at yard sales:
“Candles are something I always look for at yard/estate sales. A partially burned candle sells for very cheap. Essentially trash to the seller. I usually get an arm load of candles and make an offer on the lot.”
So, while you might not find new candles, they’ll only be lightly used, and for the price, it’s a great deal.
Closing Thoughts
Candles are wonderful – but they can be costly.
Fortunately, there are plenty of things that you can do to spend less on them.
And, these things are super simple.
So, give our tips a try and see how much you can save on candles.

I have also found that when you get to the bottom of your candles don’t throw them away but save then and mix together and add some essential oils to it to continue getting joy from the candle. waste not want not! You can also buy wax beads and add them to the candles to prolong the life of them.
