Make sure you read the rest of the post to learn how to transfer your gift card funds to your Cash App account. It is totally possible, but it just requires a little bit of finagling.
How to Add a Gift Card to Cash App
So, Cash App is great in that it allows you to send and receive money quickly and easily.
However, it doesn’t offer a direct way to add gift cards to your balance. Does that mean that there’s no way to transfer your gift card funds to your Cash App balance? Heck, no!
There’s actually a pretty simple workaround that you can use to move money from a gift card into your Cash App balance.
It’s really simple and easy to do!
How to Transfer Money from a Gift Card to Cash App Using CardCash
Okay, so if you want to add your gift card funds to your Cash App balance, then you are going to need to first exchange the gift card for PayPal cash through CardCash. Yeah, I know that might seem like a few steps, but it’s actually pretty simple, and I’ll break it all down for you below!
Here’s how it works:
- Go to CardCash.
- Enter the merchant’s name and the balance on your gift card. Then click “Get Offer.” If there’s an offer available, you’ll be able to see the amount of PayPal balance you can exchange with this gift card.
- To add another gift card, simply enter the information below and click “ADD CARD”.
- If you agree to the exchange offer, click “Continue.”
- Enter your gift card number and PIN, and then click “Connect with PayPal.”
- Log in to your PayPal account.
- Fill in the required fields and then click on “Get my PayPal balance.”
The great thing here is that you can exchange as many gift cards as you want in one go. So, this is a real time-saver!
Rates for gift card exchange value can differ from company to company, depending on the demand for that gift card.
It typically takes one business day for your funds to deposit into your PayPal account.
Okay, so now instead of a gift card you can only use at one place, you now have actual cash in your PayPal balance.
So, now you may be wondering, how can I send money rom PayPal to Cash App?
Well, it’s pretty simple, actually. Once you have transferred your gift card balance to your PayPal balance using CardCash, follow these steps.
- Link the same bank account that you have linked to your Cash App account to your PayPal account.
- Transfer the gift card money that’s now in your PayPal balance from PayPal into your bank account.
- Add the gift card funds that are now in your bank account to your Cash App account.
Sure, transferring money from a gift card to Cash App takes multiple steps, but it’s not too difficult, and once you’ve done it a few times, it will become much simpler!
Can You Add a Prepaid Card to Cash App?
So, what about prepaid cards?
Can you add those to Cash App?
Well, Cash App isn’t particularly clear about using prepaid cards on the platform. All that Cash App says about prepaid cards is that they are supported, but that depositing to these cards does not work.
There’s not a whole lot of information about using prepaid cards on Cash App on the official Cash App site.
Most other sites and blogs report that you can’t use prepaid cards on Cash App at all. But, after much research, it seems that you can use some prepaid cards, like Visa cards. Like I said before, it does mention on the official Cash App site that prepaid cards are supported, but that depositing to these cards doesn’t work.
I had a dig around online and found a quote on Reddit from the company’s official Reddit account, which said:
- “You’re not able to deposit funds to a prepaid card, but if it’s linked, you should be able to use it to send money.”
So, it seems as though while you can’t deposit funds to a prepaid card, you may be able to link it and use it to send money.
If you have a prepaid card and it doesn’t work on Cash App, and you want to be able to spend the cash anywhere, then I would, again, recommend PayPal.
Use your prepaid gift cards wherever PayPal is accepted
If you have a prepaid gift card, like a prepaid Visa card or MasterCard, then consider adding it to your PayPal account.
PayPal actually allows you to add Visa, American Express, MasterCard, or Discover gift cards to your PayPal account. Then, you can use these general-purpose gift cards during checkout, just as you would with any other debit or credit card that you have on your PayPal account.
This means that anywhere you can use PayPal to pay, you can use your gift card.
Since PayPal is now a widely accepted payment method, it can make spending the balance on a Visa, MasterCard or other prepaid gift cards much easier.
You’ll just need to make sure that the prepaid card has enough balance to cover the total amount to pay.
Closing Thoughts
Cash App makes it really easy to send money to people and receive money. It also offers a lot of other awesome features, such as the ability to invest in stocks and Bitcoin. Unfortunately, there’s no way to add a gift card to Cash App directly. You will instead need to first transfer the gift card funds to PayPal through CardCash.
Prepaid cards are supported by Cash App, but you cannot deposit to these cards. You can use linked prepaid cards to send funds to others though.
Overall, if you follow the steps above to transfer your gift card funds to PayPal through CardCash, and then move the money to the same bank that you have linked to your Cash App account, you’ll be able to add your gift card money to your Cash App balance.
