Google Job scams
While there are many legitimate work from home jobs out there, there are a very limited number of genuine Google work from home jobs.
But you wouldn’t know it if you look at the many hundreds of ads and websites out there that claim to be holding the key to a real opportunities to work for the tech giant from home.
Needless to say, these are all scams.
If Google wanted to hire people to work from home, they wouldn’t need third party publishers to charge people a fee to show them how to get the job. Google would simply use its own wide-reaching outlets to get the word out.
These work at home scams come in many forms, sometimes you can buy a “Google work at home kit”, or sometimes you just respond directly and get conned later.
Often these “jobs” come up in the paid advertisements that you see when you do a search, whether on Google or another search engine.
Sometimes it’s hard to distinguish the sponsored advertisements from the search results, which adds further validity to the content.
The fact is that anyone looking for employees, and particularly Google, is not going to blast a paid advertisement on a random search page hoping that the right caliber of people see it and apply.
This type of activity is the sort of thing that the Federal Trade Commission is very concerned about, and in fact, they do all they can to stamp it out.
Advertisements
In fact, in July 2009, the FTC took action against Google Money Tree founders (this scam was also known as the “Google Pro” and “Google Treasure Chest.”) alleging that they had charged hidden fees to consumers’ credit card and bank accounts.
The FTC eventually won the case and mailed 93,086 refund checks totaling nearly $2.3 million to people who fell victim to the scam.
Unfortunately, it’s easy for scammers, having been shut down in one form, to open up again in another.
And to make matters worse, the scammers are trading off Google’s name and reputation, making you think that the opportunities must be first-class when in fact they are probably nonexistent.
You may readily give up your credit card details to pay a nominal “application fee” of two dollars, only to find that your credit card is charged $80 per month.
So if you want real Google online jobs from home without investment, avoid these in any way you can.
Legitimate Google work-at-home jobs do exist
Having said all of that, there are legitimate and real opportunities for working for Google from home.
While you will miss out on the corporate lifestyle which is so envied, you will be working for one of the largest companies and enjoying staff benefits.
But you never have to pay to apply for a Google work-at-home job.
Anything that tells you otherwise is a scam.
The “work-at-home kits” that are offered are just a way for a rogue to extract money from you.
How to find legit online Google jobs
So if the advertisements are all scams, how do you find a genuine job with Google?
The answer is obvious!
Just as you would apply to any other company, you go to Google’s official job site.
It is Google.com/Jobs.
You can also get there from Google.com by clicking through About Google, and looking for Jobs in Our Company.
On the employment site, you will find information about working for Google, including all the employee benefits and Google’s culture.
You can also search for available (online and offline) jobs at Google by going to Google.com/about/careers/search.
There are links for you to search for jobs around the world.
To work from home, you want to find Telecommuting, under the Locations or under Other.
The page will show you all the currently open positions for telecommuting with Google.
You might find jobs doing things you had not considered, but if you can get started with Google, you are in a much better position to change your position when a suitable opening arises.
Applying for an Open Position
Each job posting contains details of what Google wants you to do to apply for the position.
Usually, you will have to fill in basic details, and attach your resume in DOC or PDF format.
Google Ad Quality Rater jobs
There are a few legitimate work-at-home Google jobs for “Ad Quality Raters.”
The job of an Ad Quality Rater is to evaluate the accuracy of Google web advertising and reporting back the effectiveness of these ads.
These are temporary Google jobs and Google doesn’t directly hire for these positions. Instead, they rely on third-party Search Evaluation companies like WorkForceLogic to find and hire qualified workers.
You can also search for “ads quality rater” on Google’s Jobs page to find an open position.
Using Google AdSense to make money online
There is also an easy and sort of indirect way to work with Google, through its Adsense Program.
AdSense involves placing adverts for goods or services on your website and being paid every time someone clicks on your advertisements.
If you already have a website or are prepared to build one, then you can place advertisements on your site and get paid for the results.
Anyone who has tried it knows that traffic, the number of people coming to the website, is an important factor in determining how much you can make, and it takes time to build that number up.
So while people advertising this method of earning from Google represent a valid concept, in practice it is nothing like as easy or quick as the advertisements would lead you to believe. I should know because I am an Adsense publisher and use Adsense ads on MoneyPantry and other sites I own.
What makes Adsense appealing to bloggers is its ease of use.
All you do is apply for an account and if you’re approved, you’ll place a small snippet of code on your site, then Google’s awesome technology will display relevant ads on your site based on the content and topic of your site.
And as far as how much you can make, it really depends on the amount of traffic your site gets. There are bloggers that make a few hundred dollars a month, and then there are giant publishers like the Huffington Post that make hundreds of thousands of dollars a month with Adsense.
Generally, the more traffic you have the more money you can make with Adsense.
The Bottom Line
Google jobs at home do exist, although as Google is a great employer, vacancies do not arise very often. But if you’re patient, you will find opportunities to join Google, and perhaps start on a great career path.
That said, never ever pay for a “Google Work-At-Home Kit” or anything similar.
If you want to work for Google, go straight to the company’s official website, especially their career page which we linked to above and you’ll be able to see all the available jobs Google has both for working at a Google branch and the ones that allow you to work from home.

As mentioned in the post, becoming a Google Ad Quality Rater and applying for any open positions found at http://www.google.com/intl/en/jobs/ are the only ones I know of that are legit.
