Most consumers looking to buy an album or song are now likely to buy it and download it from a digital marketplace, like iTunes or Beatport.
Americans love to stream music too.
In 2014, Nielsen states that the U.S. population streamed 164 billion tracks – a huge increase from 2013 when it was just 106 billion tracks.
And, the popularity of music streaming has only increased.
In its Music 360 2016 Highlights, Nielsen states that 80% of listeners had used an online music service in the last 12 months – this is up from the 75% reported in 2015. And, an amazing 431 billion tracks were streamed during 2016, meaning that streaming has now overtaken digital sales.
