Yes, a librarian!

And it is willing to pay a salary of up to $100,000.

Do I Qualify?

Librarians play a huge role in the CIA and its operations, especially when it comes to the intelligence gathering and managing CIA materials. Which is why, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the federal government employs over 1,400 librarians.

So when it comes to hiring a new one, the agency has strict rules.

The qualifications are quite stringent, which may be why the CIA has problems filling some of its vacancies.

For the librarian opening, you need as a minimum to have a Masters degree in Library or Information Science, as well as the personal attributes that you would expect.

On top of this, you have to submit to thorough medical and psychological evaluations, and take a lie detector test.

If you’re not a US citizen, you needn’t apply, and they will, in any case, do a detailed background check on you.

And forget it if you used illegal drugs for recreation in the past year, as that also rules you out.

Want to Learn a Language?

The CIA offers language courses to all employees who are interested, and there are some exotic languages in the description.

Of course, they would probably prefer that you have foreign-language experience when you apply, particularly as you may be requested as a librarian to research foreign material.

But as a librarian you are eligible to earn an “annual language bonus pay based on in-house language proficiency testing”, so this is further encouragement for you to take part in their classes.

Don’t Tell Your Friends

You are asked to use discretion in revealing that you are applying for a job at the CIA.

It’s a sort of thing that you want to show off to your friends, but the website advises this is not in your best interest.

After all, they may go blabbing about it to their friends, and before you know it malicious people may hear the news and use it to their advantage, perhaps even threatening you.

As your application goes to processing, the CIA promises to give you further guidance on who you should and shouldn’t tell.

Benefits

Working for the Central Intelligence Agency comes with a lot of benefits.

The vacations are quite generous. When you start, you get 13 days leave each year, but once you have 3 or more years service this goes up to four weeks. If you are long-term, working for the CIA for 15 years, you can build up to 26 days leave per year.

In addition, sometimes your previous non-federal work experience can be credited to your years of service so that you get more vacation sooner.

Retirement

Early to talk about it, I know, as you haven’t got the job yet, but in common with many other government employees, the retirement plan is excellent.

The retirement age ranges from 55 to 57, and if you are young enough to put in 20 years of service you can even retire at the age of 50.

This is the icing on the cake for what looks like a great job, so if you are qualified you should definitely apply.
